Demetress Bell has replaced Jason Peters once and now he'll have to do it again. He was the man tapped to fill Peters shoes in Buffalo when Jason was traded and now he'll follow Peters again in Philadelphia. The man tasked with making sure he does that is Howard Mudd. Bell says the two hit it off on his visit here.
"We sat down for dinner Sunday night for 3-4 hours and just talked about family. I don't even think we talked about football the first day. We just talked. He told me a lot about himself and I told a lot about myself. I think me and coach Mudd go hand-in-hand as far as coach and player, and player and coach."
Mudd filled him in on the differences between what he did in Buffalo and what he’ll need to do in Philly. Bell says that he thinks Mudd’s scheme will fit him well.
"First off, I’ll just say pass protection. In Buffalo, the technique was very set and we would just go straight back. With coach Mudd, coach Mudd’s technique is sitting wider and keeping the pocket in a circle shape. In Buffalo, you just set straight back, but with coach Mudd it’s more of a basketball technique in your defensive position and that’s how I look at it. I think that will really benefit me."
In the run game, he says that the systems are more similar.
"In Buffalo, we had sprint draws and outside plays. I think plays like that work to my ability as far as I can move. Yeah, that'll help me tremendously."
Mudd won't be Bell's only support here, he says that Jason Peters was one of the reasons he came to Philly and that when the two were in Buffalo, Peters was a great help.
"Jason was like a big brother. As soon as I got there, he took me in. [former Buffalo offensive line] Coach [Sean] Kugler left for the Steelers, and he told me that's who you keep up with and that's whose coattails you hang onto, so I did. He didn't take me in when I first got there, but he saw me work and work. Then, he took me in and showed me the dos and don'ts. Me and him have a great relationship right now because of that."
