Interim Saints head coach Joe Vitt announced today that RB Darren Sproles has been ruled out of Monday night's game against the Eagles after undergoing surgery on his hand.
"When you can't play in a game, you're disappointed," Vitt said. "He's extremely accountable to his teammates. He's a big part about what we do around here and he's one of those guys that live for Sunday. It's disappointing."yards
Vitt did not offer a timetable for Sproles return, but his loss is a blow to a Saints offense that currently ranks last in the NFL in rushing. While Sproles was not the primary back, he was New Orleans most dangerous overall threat out of the backfield. He had just 26 carries this year, but also 39 catches for 323 yards and 4 TDs. He's 2nd on the team in total touches, yardage & TDs.
Plus, Sproles is one of the most dangerous return men in the NFL and was the Saints primary returner on both kicks and punts. His loss is huge for the Saints overall.
For the Eagles, the only player ruled out for Monday is WR Mardy Gilyard, but after missing practice again today, it's very likely that Danny Watkins will miss his 2nd straight game with an ankle injury.
Nate Allen injured his hamstring in practice yesterday and sat out today. He has not been ruled out for Monday, but if he can't go David Sims will start in his place. Passing is literally the only thing the Saints do well on either side of the ball, so losing Allen, the Eagles only capable coverage safety, could really hurt Monday night.
