All in all it wasn't a terribly impressive effort from the "ones" last night, but at the same time it's not necessarily time for panic. The offense is going to be fine. Westbrook carried the ball all of once and the offense was not terribly adventurous(read "vanilla"). With McNabb looking fully healthy, Andrews, & LJ back I'm really not worried about scoring points. They've done it before and there's little reason to think they won't do it again.
I do have some concerns about the defense however, specifically the linebacking corps. Now I thought the secondary could have played better last night, but like the offense I know this unit and I know what it can do. It's just preseason, the secondary will be fine. I don't have the same confidence in the linebacking corps. I haven't seen this unit in a real game, I don't know what they can do. Frankly, I thought they looked confused at times especially by the screen pass. The Steelers absolutely carved them up in the second quarter with screens. To be honest, the younger faster LB corps didn't look a whole lot different than Trotter & Dhani Jones.
Broderick Bunkley played good once again, getting penetration several times and doing well to stuff the run. The ends, however, provided little to no pressure. I know the blitz schemes in preseason aren't very complex and Jim Johnson isn't showing much, but it shouldn't take crazy blitz schemes for a defensive end to beat and offensive tackle. If you can win that battle, everything else falls into place. The Eagles were not winning that battle.
Now, for the Eagles the story of the game has to be the play of Kevin Kolb. Yes for the most part he was playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers but the fact is that he looked good. He was 26-37 for 242 yards and a TD. If you took out all the bad drops(which there were several) those numbers might look even better. He doesn't panic, he's incredibly accurate, and is already reading the field well. He could stand to speed up his reads, but that's going to come with experience. I must say, so far so good with this experiment.
Alon has even written a diary asking whether Kolb will be the #2?
