Take that Dallas!

Now the Philadelphia Eagles are the biggest thing to hit Clovis, New Mexico.

One surefire way to fill up Rock Staubus Gymnasium is to have a basketball game between the Clovis Wildcats and the Hobbs Eagles.

Charity organizers seek a similar audience Saturday when a different Eagles squad comes into town -- the Philadelphia Eagles, led by Clovis native Hank Baskett III.

Hank Baskett Jr., the receiver's father and executive director of Oasis, said the most simliar thing he remembers in Clovis is a charity game featuring Dallas Cowboys players about two decades ago, but this means more locally.

"This is a first of this magnitude," he said. "Clovis has one of their own that's going to be out there helping organize this."

Eagles listed to join the younger Baskett include Quinten Mikell, Todd Herremans, Greg Lewis, Sheldon Brown, Tra Thomas and Jon Dorenbos. But Clovis Athletic Director Brian Stacy said he is hearing other players may take part or make appearances.

Seriously though, is there a football player that does more for his hometown than Hank Baskett? Every week there's a new article about something Hank has done in Clovis. During the season the local paper reports on every Eagles game and big groups of people come to watch the games. There was even a huge section of Clovis residents on hand wearing Eagles green to watch the Eagles beat the Cowboys in Dallas last year.

I must say, the relationship between Hank and his hometown is pretty cool.

First I had heard about Hank doing this kind of thing. There's a lot of guys in the NFL that do stuff like this and I wish they'd get the headlines instead of Pacman and Chris Henry and the like. Oh well, that's the way the world works. Good to hear it.
