Eagles Draft Preview - Offensive Tackle

We started our look at the Eagles draft at defensive  end, so I thought it would make sense to jump over to their offensive counterparts... Offensive Tackles.

On the roster

The Eagles' starters at OT are the same guys that have been starting for almost the entire Andy Reid era. Jon Runyan & Williams Thomas, two multiple time pro bowlers and the anchors of the offensive line. The problem is that they're 35 & 34 years old respectively and both in the final year of their contracts. It's likely, if not certain, that we'll have two brand new starting OTs next year.

Who will they be? Option #1 is 2006 2nd round pick Winston Justice. His first NFL action was last year against the Giants when he was abused by Osi Umenyoria to the tune of 6 sacks. Maybe only 4 were directly his fault, but that hardly makes it okay. Justice had a chance to redeem himself in the final week of the season against the Bills when Jon Runyan went down during the game with an injury. This time at right tackle, where he played at USC, he fared much better. Still, it's fair to say most fans don't harbor a whole lot of confidence in Justice, although at least one Eagles blogger does...

The way I see it, Justice is still an unknown. I'm not going to make an entire judgment on a player's career after one game. As bad as it was, it was just one game and we're too quick to forget how awful the rest of the Eagles' O-line was that night. This is a big year for Winston though. He's likely to get a ton of playing time in preseason, and now that he's in year 3 it's certainly time for him to step up.

The other options for the future at OT are names you know pretty well. Shawn Andrews was a tackle in college and has been converted to one of the better guards in the game. Still, tackle is the more premier position and it's certainly possible that the Eagles would move Andrews out to RT to replace Runyan. Same deal with Todd Herremans, who was also a tackle in college. Many people still say that the 6'6" Herremans would do better on the outside as a Tackle where he could better use his height to an advantage. On the Eagles website, both Andrews and Herremans are listed as "Guard/Tackle." With the emergence of Max Jean Gilles at OG, it almost seems to easy to move one of those two out to OT and slide Max Jean right in at guard...

In the draft

So, after reading that if you're saying "We could really use a big time offensive tackle in this draft" you're in luck! Experts say that this projects to be one of the best offensive tackle classes in recent memory. Rivals.com gives the class an "A" grade and Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said  he thinks he's looking at the best class of offensive tackles in an NFL draft in years, or maybe even decades.

It's the best group I've seen in 24 years collectively, and it was a good group before the juniors were added to it," Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said. "Those guys enhanced what we really think is a strong group. The majority of them can play on the left side or play both sides. It's unusual to have that many guys that big and that athletic and that productive. I think for the ones that are on the right (side) some of them have actually played on the left before and they probably have that flexibility. Just to be able to play the left (side) is such a premium. I think you can get a tackle in (the first) three rounds."

Mock drafts have as many as 5 or 6 OTs going in the first round. The top names are Jake Long - Michigan, Ryan Clady - Boise St., Jeff Otah - Pittsburgh, and Chris Williams - Vanderbilt, who the Eagles are reportedly interested in and interviewed at the senior bowl. Long & Clady seem to be the consensus top 2, but the other 3 will almost certainly be first round picks as well. Other possible first round picks are Sam Baker - USC & Gosder Cherilus - Boston College.

Guys like Cherilus and Baker could also drop into the second round along side solid OTs like Carl Nicks - Nebraska, Oniel Cousins - UTEP(met with at senior bowl), & Tony Hills - Texas. If teams start snapping up OTs early and often there could be very well be a run on the position that sees all or most of these guys gone by the end of round two.

Whether the Eagles decide to use a first day pick on a OT depends mostly on how they evaluate their own roster and what if any long term plans they've already made. It could very well have been their plan all along to move Andrews or Herremans out to OT, and if they still see Winston Justice as a future starter... then the OT position is set. If they've lost faith in Justice or at least have some serious doubts and if a guy like Chris Williams was still sitting there at #19 and Andy really loved the kid... would he pass him up? That said, if this is such a deep draft at OT, do you need to spend a first round to get a quality guy? Perhaps the Eagles could go after a more top heavy position in round one and still grab a quality OT later on? This is going to very interesting to watch come draft weekend.

What do you guys think? Do we need an OT?

Update [2008-3-21 6:33:32 by JasonB]: Updating some guys the Eagles have spoken with or worked out. They met with Oneil Cousins & Chris Williams who I previously mentioned, but also had a private workout Heath Benedict from Newberry who they also met at the senior bowl. Benedict is a giant at 6'5 326, but went to a small school in Newberry after transferring from Tennessee. They've also had a private workout with Devin Clark - New Mexico, who is projected to go somewhere in the middle rounds.

Update [2008-3-26 23:27:57 by JasonB]: Pretty shocking and sad update. Heath Benedict, one of these players the Eagles interviewed, was found dead.

Games are won at the trenches. It's not the sexy pick. can never have enough lineman

yup
That's where it all starts...  If we don't block, B-West can't run...  If we don't give McNabb some time, it won't matter who's in the WR corps.  If he's on his ass with the ball in his hands, we could have Fitz, Moss, and Chad Johnson out there and it wouldn't do any good...  I see us taking two (atleast) in the draft in total.

its going to happen and it will be good
we knew all along this was going to happen its no mystery. I've been looking at our draft for about 2 weeks now and I came to the conclution that we will spend a high pick on a OT. I would actualy be happy if we spent #19 on one. yes I wouldn't mind trading up for that big time DE like I said before but what it comes down to is I still see this happening. we will draft a OT and a WR in the first 2 rounds and we might also work trads to get a DE too.

by NickPampani on Mar 20, 2008 8:15 AM EDT   0 recs

Andy will definitely take one
It's just a question of where? The question about Justice and who falls to #19 might just be enough for the Birds to spend their first rounder on OT. However, I think they take some big guys to develop in the later rounds.

by RichieOfAshburn on Mar 20, 2008 8:27 AM EDT   0 recs

well yeah
the eagles have always been about taking guys to develop, and they are good at it too. if you look at andy's draft record a lot of the mid to late rounders are still on the team. andy can spot talent and that is why we have guys like gaiter and cole. I'm sure if he sees someone who he knows will develop we might see some unexpected action in the first 2 rounds and he will take that lesser known in rounds 3-6

Justice
I don't think there is a question on Justice.  It is a lot harder for some reason to play left side versuse right.  Also, he was going against Osi who just makes people look silly.  I like this guy and he took that hard expect him to have been working his ass off to come back and clear his name.  He is a USC guy so you know he is a hard worker and has skill that place is a linemen factory.

Otah is Most Likely
Offensive Tackles as ranked by GCobb
  1. Long     - likely taken top five
  2. Williams - likely taken before 19
  3. Clady    - likely taken before 19
  4. Otah     - Should be on the board, Eagles OK with him at this spot.

Take a wr/S
Since drafting an OT first round wouldnt help this year because he wouldnt even play, id rather just take a wr/s and take a OT in the second. Its a realll deep class of OT. We could have a guy thats the same quality of a first round pick and he would also have a full year to develop being behind runyan and thomas on the depth chart. The only true first round safety is Kenny Phillips who seems very athletic and has good size. There are only a couple WR i would want in this draft and they are pretty good picks. Limas sweed, Devin Thomas, James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly, and maybe Manningham. Def not Desean Jackson. Hes a midgit.

by andyb on Mar 20, 2008 9:32 AM EDT   0 recs

Hmm..
You know, I sort of agree with you.  If I'm running this thing I'm going to scout the talent at Safety, Receiver, and OT extensively.

Then, when it's time for pick #19 (and #51, and likely a pick or two more), I might just take whoever I feel is the best out of any of those three positions.

by BFH on Mar 20, 2008 9:39 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Safety...
Not much there...

by JasonB on Mar 20, 2008 10:01 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Indeed
The only first-round safety is Kenny Phillips, and there's even disagreement about that.

However, there are some versatile corners in the draft (like McKelvin) and there are some guys worth looking at in the second and third round as well -- Reggie Smith, Dujuan Morgan.

by BFH on Mar 20, 2008 10:20 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
I don't see us taking a safety.  Some places have DaJuan Morgan up there with Phillips.  I like this kid but he should be around in the 2nd or 3rd round considering we have mid picks throughout and should be able to easily move up in the 3rd.

by Whodie126 on Mar 21, 2008 7:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Otah
I went to JUCO with this kid and had the chance to get to know him as well as watch him play football and basketball.

He's an absolute monster, every bit of his 6'6" frame. He's got great footwork that will be a huge help against fast DEs and the size and strength to take any rush. I'm a little confused about his apparent lack of speed. Never seemed to be an issue on either the football or basketball court.

He also has a great work ethic on and off the field.  I never saw him refuse any order, and he would regularly get on the other football players for not doing their chores.

Overall, I think this kid will be a special talent and would love to have him playing for the Birds.

by Eagles301256 on Mar 20, 2008 9:48 AM EDT   0 recs

ya know
I could never say I met the guy but by what you said I like him a lot. the only thing is that, like I siad before, I belive andy reid is going to be looking for an immediate impact player on the first day. that's not to say we won't trade around picks to try to get 2 first round picks but if there is a way we cab bring in a player who will make a differencw right away we most likely will bring that person in. someone else said it before but this draft is filled with great OTs and we could just as easly get a great player in the 2nd round. no matter were we draft him however he won't start till next year anyway

by NickPampani on Mar 20, 2008 10:14 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No on OT
I don't really see a need to take an OT - at least not in the first round. If the team is really interested in winning now then there's very little chance an OT will play this year. Also, I think that next year - should both Runyan and Thomas retire (and I think of the two Thomas could play longer) - then we could move Herremans to LT and play Justice at RT. Or if you don't trust Justice yet you could move Andrews to RT and promote Jean-Gilles to a guard spot.

In any case, I think an OT in the draft would be nice but if it's one of the deepest drafts in years for that position why utilize a first or second rounder? I think safety, wide receiver and tight end are all more pressing needs.

by ajay on Mar 20, 2008 11:05 AM EDT   0 recs

No way on Tight End
We just drafted Celek last year and he looks like he can be a star in this offense ... dare I say a Jason Witten.

by Whodie126 on Mar 21, 2008 6:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

DE first then OL
this doesn't have much to do with an OT unless you count the fact that it would affect how we draft. I was just reading up on Vernon Gholston and he is an eagle already in terms of how he plays ans how we draft. from what I have read he has the ability to move to an outside LB possition. this is whar the eagles and exspecialy jim johnson likes. if a player on defence can play more then one positon we like him a lot.and even more so if its between ends and linebackers. look at gocong and gaither. I belive if gholston is available come time for the patriots pick we will see a trade.

by NickPampani on Mar 20, 2008 11:20 AM EDT   0 recs

O-Line
First of I love the idea of having Jean-Gillis and Andrews on the right side of the line! This is what I believe the Birds will do for next year. Thomas will most likely be done after this season, so why not draft his replacement this year? I agree with everyone else about getting a reciever or safety but the talent simply isn't there this year in the first round. This is a year where you can get a possible pro bowl Tackle at the 19th spot. Any other year these guys would be gone in the first 8-10 picks!

by Jkreck on Mar 20, 2008 11:50 AM EDT   0 recs

Agreed
If there was another safety or two, I'd so go S and grab the OT in the 2nd....  But there isn't...  Plus you can't argue with getting a possible pro bowl caliber player at a much discounted price, since normally that same player in any other year's draft would be gone in the top 10

by foos05 on Mar 20, 2008 12:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Otah
I think Otah is long gone by 19. But if Andy is in love with a certain player you know he is going to get him!

by Jkreck on Mar 20, 2008 11:52 AM EDT   0 recs

11 picks = Lotsa Motion in Andy's Ocean
11 picks.  Some trade-able depth on the OL and at CB, two valued positions.

You can't squeeze a square peg ina round hole... Nor can you squeeze 11 rooks onto this roster.  Teams are competing, in this deep draft, to trade down... to get capable additional bodies.

With 11 + lito + ?  The Eagles have depth to trade up.  Watch them.

WR pick high?  No way.  It takes too long to learn the West Coast scheme.  QB?  RB?  TE?  FOgetaboutit.  On the offensive side of the ball, it's about OL in '08, and Andy's always been about guys that can slide over to Guard from the Tackle position.  He'll take a natural OT.  The OT talent'll be too rich deep into the 1st round. Book it.

What else?  DE, CB (if Lito goes).  Andy likes Safties that can cover.  In other words, like the OL, he likes tough CB's that can slide over to saftey (aka Brandon Merriweather last yr).

OT, CB, DE.  Take your pick.  I think the Eagles'll take 2... in round 1.

Unless, of course, they put together a package for that #1 wr...

by meangreenmachine on Mar 20, 2008 10:44 PM EDT   0 recs

I think you're right
I think we will see movement from them on draft day. We ended up cutting 3 or 4 rookies last year and with so many veterans under contract now I can't seem them fitting even half of 11 picks.

by JasonB on Mar 21, 2008 9:14 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Knowing Reid
I'd say that offensive tackle with the first pick is almost a given. IMO, Herremans was the weak link in the offensive line last year, so I doubt the Birds have confidence in moving him to tackle. A starter quality left tackle is a must considering William Thomas' age and health issues. Use other picks and Lito to trade for a veteran WR if need be.
