Eagles sign DT/FB Dan Klecko

Klecko visited the Eagles last Tuesday and PFT is reporting that Adam Schefter is reporting that he has signed a one year deal.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with free agent Dan Klecko.

Klecko has primarily played defensive tackle during his five-year NFL career with the Colts and Patriots, but the Eagles plan to move him to fullback.

The interesting thing is that it appears the Eagles see Klecko as primarily a fullback. We could certainly use some depth at DT, where Klecko primarily played in his career, but we also could use a fullback. at 5-11, 275 pounds Klecko makes for a pretty big fullback... I'm going to check with our pals at the Colts blog Stampede Blue but I believe Klecko has previously only played fullback in goal line situations. It should be interesting to hear if the Eagles plan on playing him the same 30% of offensive snaps that Thomas Tapeh played.

Klecko is a local guy who born in Colts Neck, NJ and went to college at Temple. He also has 3 superbowl rings(Pats x2, Colts). His father is former Jets great Joe Klecko.

Klecko is most famous for catching the game tying TD in the 2006 AFC Championship game where his Colts beat the Patriots(his former team) en route to a superbowl title.

I love this
I think this is great ... I doubt he will play as much as Tapeh but hell the Eagles don't use a FB that much anyway ... I will love to have him inside the 5 and I think he will help at DT too.

But
Don't we use Nick Cole for that? Or does he suck?

We did use him
as a goal line fullback a few times.

Nick Cole
Cole is also a guard.

I wonder if he can play Tackle too?

Do you guys realize our entire starting Offensive Lines last year was made up of guys who were O Tackles in College?

one year though
1 year for the eagles usually means an experiment that will last only that. most likely he will not be resigned

at this point
he's not even guaranteed to make the team.

one year contract
i'm partial to jasonb's opinion on this one. at the end of the season the eagles signed FB jason davis from the practice squad to a 2 year contract. last year at the start of the season it was unclear if tapeh's spot was safe cuz of the push davis was making. it's unlikely that this klecko project lasts past the end of preseason. he's probably just here to push davis and/or cole.

So
Will they take a look at him as a backup DT also?

I'm for this move
I know it's receiving some criticism but I like this move.  I wouldn't be against both Jason Davis and Klecko making the team.  I know that's not a very Eagles' move (as they rarely carry multiple FBs) but considering Klecko's versatility it'd be a good move.

I've been a fan of Klecko since his days at Temple.  I just hope he's on this team because he's an extremely hardworking guy.

Davis and Klecko
If they both make the team, the Eagles could run the 2 fullback set that the Packers devestated the Seahawks with.
