Are we seeing the start of a Giants dynasty?

As tough as it is to say, it's fair to ask the question. Could the Giants be primed for a sustained run here?

FOX ran a pretty fascinating stat about the biggest superbowl upsets of all time. There were two bigger than the Giants beating the Pats. That was Superbowl 3 with Broadway Joe Namath and Superbowl XXXVI in which the Pats were 14 point underdogs to the St Louis Rams.  In fact, look at a headline following that game...

New England shocks St. Louis to win Super Bowl XXXVI

Just try and count how many times you see "shock" and "stun" in the headlines tomorrow...

It's hard to remember in hindsight but the Pats winning that game was actually a bigger shock than the Giants winning this one. The reason everyone forgets that is because the Patriots went on to become a dynasty. No one knew at that time that an upstart team who'd just shocked everyone with an unlikely superbowl win over a hugely favored opponent would go on to win 2 more titles.

Scared yet?

The Giants are the epitome of the old football cliche. Defense wins championships. Their defense is for the most part very young and they have a young quarterback that has obviously come into his own. Even if Strahan hangs it up after this one, that defense is still stocked with good young playmakers. Their offense may not be as good as their D just yet, but they're pretty damn good and still very young on that side too. So it's a fair question to ask... Are we witnessing the start of Giants dynasty?

Frankly, I think we could be... and if there was ever motivation for this Eagles team to be aggressive this offseason it's that...

On the bright side, it could have been worse. At least it wasn't Dallas!

Long View
Take a long view.

Giants
1997 - Playoffs
2000 - Super Bowl (loss)
2002 - Playoffs
2005 - Playoffs
2006 - Playoffs
2007 - Super Bowl (win)

The key to the Giants win was great play on the lines.  How young is the O-line and interior D-line?

by Andrew on Feb 3, 2008 10:44 PM EST   0 recs

Far as I can tell
It's pretty young... Justin Tuck is young, Jay Alford is a rookie. Not sure about their O-Line.

Strahan
Guys, I think we should hope for a Strahan retirement.  That would be helpful.

by BFH on Feb 4, 2008 10:55 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

O-Line
The O-Line is relatively young as well.  The only one who has hit 30 is Shaun O'Hara.

They have a really good, young guard in Chris Snee.

David Diehl is just OK as a LT, and I would bet they hope to upgrade.

O'Hara and McKenzie should both be there for a long time as well.

That's an over-reaction
Asking if this is the start of a dynasty.  I think the days of a dynasty are gone, with free agents and salary caps and all.  When Baltimore won, were they starting a dynasty?  When Rams won, we're they starting a dynasty?

Quite honestly, without one thrown interception by Favre, the Giants wouldn't even be in the Super Bowl.  I think the Giants got hot/lucky/better at just the right time.

Also, with all the drama with that program, there's going to be a downfall, soon.  I'd be more worried about Dallas than I would NYG.

I hope you are right
And it's certainly possible. Maybe they were a team that just got hot and caught lightning in a bottle... However, maybe they aren't. I'm really hoping the Eagles take this as a caution.

"They won the Superbowl and
they barely beat us. We think we're already pretty close."

-- Andy Reid*

*Andy Reid nor anyone else actually said this, this is just how my bitter friends and I are projecting their response to last night's game.

When I made the choice that I did I thought I was doing the right thing, not going to Vegas and drinking for two or three days. ---Tony Romo

Dont be bitter
Just ask the Stats Team to produce Andy's record against the Giants. There might not be any Super Bowl victories but we got numbers, lots and lots of numbers. Take the long view.

Reid vs. Giants
99 - 0-2
00 - 0-3
01 - 2-0
02 - 1-1
03 - 2-0
04 - 2-0
05 - 0-2
06 - 2-1
07 - 0-2

That's 9-11, by far the worst record Reid has against any team.

by Andrew on Feb 4, 2008 6:11 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Losing to Giants
11 of 62 (17.7%) losses under Big Red have been to the Midgets while only 20 of 158 (12.7%) games have been against them.  Versus the rest of the league, Reid is 87-51.  We've lost 4 games to NY that we should have been expected to win.

Dynasties gone?
People said that after the Cowboys.  People didn't believe New England would be a dynasty based on those same reasons.

Why are we ending the NE dynasty?  I don't think it is over yet.  They have solid personel, cap space and the #7 overall pick.

by brooksy on Feb 4, 2008 1:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
I don't think the Pats are going anywhere.

They may not be prohibitive favorites next year, but anyone would be foolish to discount them.

Well...
Except for anyone who believes in the curse of the Super Bowl loser.

what about spags
when steve spagnuolo leaves i doubt the giants field the same defense. lets hope dan snyder was waiting for a head coach so he could hire spags. i dont think we'll see a dynasty

by crickles on Feb 3, 2008 11:43 PM EST   0 recs

Spags
It's nothing personal against Spags, because I think the personnel rather than the coaching was the issue, but I hate that the position coach of the worst unit of the Eagles defense goes to the Giants as the DC and turns out to be a genius.

I think the only thing that would make me more bitter than this is if it were Dallas.

True
I think at this point, the Skins job is his if he wants it.

by JasonB on Feb 4, 2008 6:57 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I don't know...
This might be worse than Dallas, or just as bad.

There are a lot of Giants' fans in my neck of the woods (Rochester, NY).

On top of that, I am totally ill-prepared to live in a world where Eli Manning is a Super Bowl MVP.

Eli.  Manning.  Super Bowl.  MVP.

What.  The.  F.

Nothing should surprise us in the NFL anymore.  Nothing.

question
do you guys think it's right that sports shows are asking "did the giants win or did the patriots lose" and then saying that it was the patriots choking more than the giants being better?  i personally thought that the giants defense dominated new englands offense the majority of the game...i don't like giving the giants credit for doing things well either, but i still am pretty sure they out and out won that football game.  i remember at half time or somewhere around there i was in shock the patriots were winning, given how much better the giants were playing than them.

by eagleyosh on Feb 4, 2008 10:50 AM EST   0 recs

Meh
That's what the sports media does. I'm sure the Giants are used to it by now.

by JasonB on Feb 4, 2008 11:29 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

One play
TexasLax - the Giants got lucky with that INT by Favre just like the Patriots got lucky with that Tuck Rule back in 2001. That's how the NFL goes.

I really don't see this Giants team being a "dynasty", but you never know. I'm still not convinced that Eli is that good. He just doesn't handle adversity well.
