What we got and what's next?

No one has more INTs in the last 2 years than Samuel
So here's what we got. We got a playmaker. No player has more interceptions over the past 2 years than Asante Samuel. He joins an Eagles defense with an NFL worst 19 takeaways. As a team they only had 11 interceptions.

Make no mistake about it, this team was in desperate need of a playmaker on defense. They needed a guy that creates turnovers and they got one. The best part, he never gets hurt!

Now, this is only the first step. Obviously the Eagles need to get someone in here to create more pressure on the passer. Certainly they hope that will be Victor Abiamiri and they have a pass rush specialist in Clemons on the way in tomorrow. Plus there's always the draft....

There's still work that needs to be done on the offensive side of the ball, but clearly the Eagles are going with the "defense wins championships" mindset. I'm sure we'll all be interested to see what if any weapons they give McNabb however. Interestingly enough, McNabb was interviewed on ESPN after the Samuel signing was made official and he repeatedly told the interviewer to "stay tuned" and that they were "just getting started."

What's Next?

First and foremost, Lito Sheppard is as good as gone. There were some reports today that the Eagles plan was to keep Sheppard and move Sheldon Brown to safety... but after I heard Andy Reid say this during today's presser:

"He'll(Samuel) be the starting left corner and then we'll work things out from there as we go."

It became pretty obvious to me that Lito is done. Andy was asked directly where Samuel fit into the secondary and that was his response. If his plan was to move Sheldon to safety and keep Lito, he'd have said it there. Samuel also said something to the effect of "whoever is out there" he'll work with, which makes me think the Eagles made Samuel privy to some of their plans this offseason.

So what would Lito fetch? He's a two time pro bowler that is an unquestioned playmaker when he's healthy. That's always the caveat with Lito, when he's healthy. Still, he's not that old and he still should have plenty of value with the dearth of free agent CBs this offseason.

Now it should be said. Player for player trades are very rare in the NFL. So I would think it's probably a stretch to think that the Eagles will go out and swap Lito for a WR and go on their merry way. It's much more likely that Lito gets dealt for draft picks or as part of a package to move up in April's draft.

To those hoping for a big name WR in trade for Lito, this afternoon I was listening to Anthony Gargano on WIP and he said that he'd heard pretty unequivocally that guys that Roy Williams and Larry Fitzgerald are not available. He said many times he'd love to have those guys but his contacts told him there was no shot. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised to see this other shoe drop pretty quickly. I can't imagine they let Lito dangle on the roster until late April. Something is going to happen soon.

Wow
This is quite a splash the eagles made.  What do you guys think of the deal, and how does the cap room look?  Do you think eagles spent too much money? Or do you think this guy is worth it?

The Deal with Lito
It seems to me that having three very good DBs on your team is a boon - especially when two of them are coming pretty cheap.

But if we trade Lito, then our secondary is only a bit better than it was before, right? Who would play the nickel?

So if we trade Lito for draft picks...we have to use one of them on a DB correct? Preferably an early round pick? I could see that happening...

I dont understand this deal if we trade Lito
I know Samuel is better but Lito (when healthy) is pro bowl caliber and no one can doubt his knack for the big play.

Why not start Lito and Samuel? I dont understand why this wouldnt work.

The only reason imo that we shouldnt have him back is if someone puts a pretty good trade together for him

Its a new season!

part of it is taht Lito is unhappy
Most reports say that he wants a new contract.

And he hasn't been healthy for 3 years.

I'm Less concerned...
with Lito's happiness and more concerned with value in return if we trade him. I doubt we'll get good value because of the injuries.
So If we can't I say keep him.
The road to victory

But
He's a two-time Pro Bowler. I think you can get some good value for him.

by ajay on Feb 29, 2008 9:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Question...
What is the LEAST you would accept for Lito and be happy about it?  3rd round pick and depth chart fodder?  Or is it "playmaker or keep him"?

by BFH on Feb 29, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I suppose a 3rd is the minimum...

Still, I'd like an impact from whatever we get back for Lito.

by JasonB on Feb 29, 2008 10:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Really?
Just a third rounder? I'd shoot for a second at minimum. He was a first rounder; he's 26 and he's made two Pro-Bowls. Yes he's not healthy enough but that could just be a problem with conditioning, etc.

by ajay on Feb 29, 2008 10:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

excellent move
The guys on WIP were lukewarm about this deal because Samuel is not that much better than Lito when healthy.  What they are missing is that Samuel usually plays 16 games at a high level.  Lito plays 5 games at a high level, 5 games hurt, and 5 games not at all.  You can't compare Samuel to Lito straight up.  You have to compare Samuel with hurt Lito for five games and Samuel with William James for five games.  I don't think Samuel will be toasted by James Thrash.  So then you see this is a huge upgrade.  Samuel is also a ball hawk and this defense, while pretty effective, couldn't turn the ball over all year.  So this again is big upgrade.

Way to go Eagles' fans!
Jinx the newbie with all the "Oh, he's always healthy!"

Poor guy's going to catch mono the day before his 1st game with the Eagles.

Interceptions
Don't get too excited about it.

16 interceptions in two CONTRACT years.  But 22 in 75 games for his career.  Also no sacks, no fumble recoveries.

Lito has 17 interceptions in 77 games in his career.  He also has 2 sacks and 1 fumble recovery.

Honestly, I don't see that big a difference at all.

I'm really hoping here that we will keep all three of our starting caliber corners, not foolishly trade away Lito for some chump change 3rd round draft pick which will be wasted on some do-nothing like Billy McMullen or Quinton Caver or Matt Ware.  Otherwise, this was just a big waste of cap money, because Asante Samuel is not 3 times better than Lito Sheppard and there is no guarantee he is going to make 6-10 interceptions every year.

As to Lito crying about his contract, the Eagles gave him $3.6M in 2002 and another $8.8M in 2004, besides paying him $3.5M the last 6 years for about 4 years worth of gametime.  If he invested that $12.5M wisely, it should have doubled by now with just some moderately intelligent stock picks in the market.  My own money has tripled in that time period besides spitting out an annual return of about 8% in dividends.

The entire premise of the Eagles early lock-up of players is to give them a discounted version of the signing bonus they would not receive until several years later.  In Lito's case, being a 1st round pick in 2002 with a 5 year contract, he would not have been a free agent until last year, so he would have been living off the peanuts the Eagles would have been paying under his rookie deal.  Does he really believe he got screwed by being given $10M before the Eagles had to do it?

Samuel vs. Lito
This is kind of eerie.

Lito - 77 games
232 tackles, 205 solo

Samuel - 75 games
232 tackles, 208 solo

I wish the NFL kept more advanced metrics like passing yards given up or touchdowns given up so we could see that too.

Well...
He's had 2 injuries to the same knee in 3 years... That's the problem with Walker.

Lito Trade.
Would Lito and this years first get a Larry Fitzgerald or a Roy Williams?  Would the Eagles make that trade?  I don't know the answer to either question, but it intrigues me.

by brooksy on Mar 1, 2008 1:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

maybe
the word in jacksonville is that the jags want lito.  the jags and the eagles are my two teams, so i'd be down with that.  i know stroud is looking for a trade, but i'm not really sure if the eagles would want him.

I don't know
Brothers in Arms, I feel that when the season is turning and we can see what the coaches are doing I can really say what I think and feel good about what I am saying. The offseason is a crap shoot really.I don't know what the coaches want and all of what we are doing is speculating and trying to sift through all the crap that the media throws our way. I have to say that I like Samuel as a player, I don't know about his skill set in our system(but what do I know that JJ doesn't? Nothing) that being said I like Sheppard and Brown. Too bad that Sheppard is injury prone. Does anyone know if Sheppard trains with the team in the offseason? I don't know but he doesn't look like a Jerry Rice in the offseason to me. If he doesn't train in the offseason like he should he should prolly give it a shot. But that is just me being presumptious like always.

My comment would be that I think we should keep all 3(Brown, Sheppard and Samuel) If we could get some real good value for Sheppard I would do it, but I don't really know what another team would feel about a above average player that is injury prone. If they think that they can deal with the risk and try and gamble on a playmaker we should do it. If not we should keep him. He doesn't seem to have to much leverage to bargin with the Eagles(my opinion).

My opinion of this signing is that I am really suprised at this whole situation. I might have been wrong and off base with all of my critisim directed at the this front offices philosophies in past few years. I hope that they saw that we were going to have a young team and they wanted to season them up before "bringing in the help". That's actually a really good idea. I hope that's what they planned and it pans out that way. We could have a team of up and coming players mixed with some really good skill guys all at the same time. Great work.

This is really early in the offseason so I can't say anything that everyone hasn't heard but, here goes. I agree that we need to go after somemore defense and draft BDawks replacement, and look for a OT if there is a really good one(Which looks to be the case). I just don't understand Andy on the offensive side of the ball sometimes. I think and I am trying to emphasize THINK; that Andy likes a offense that has a lot of different options for Donovan and keep him protected and let him pick apart the other team. He has shown this in the past and I really like this approach myself. I like the pass to open up the run theory. I hope that he sees that we could use a pass catching FB and maybe a spread the field WR. I think if we can get these guy's we have a really good chance to be a favorite to win the East.

What do you guy's think?
Manningham really stunk up the joint in INDY. I'm not saying that I was totally wrong but he didn't look like a 4.59 WR when I saw him own Justin King in college. You really don't need to be a 4.2 guy to be a great WR. Look a Matt Jones.... He could slip into the late 2nd early third. We could pick him up. Who knows? I do know that Jerry Porter to the JAGS sounds pretty good in theory.

I think / I hope
I THINK they should keep Lito, try to work out an extension, draft a good FS (or give Sheldon some reps in 2008 and see how he works out) and then we have the most fearsome secondary in football for another 4-5 years.

I HOPE this doesn't turn out to be another Freak-y signing...hope we didn't overpay for a player with 2 good years who doesn't play to that level in years to come. Note he had less INTs last year than the previous year.

go after more weapons
The move to pick up Samuel was a smart move.  Keep Lito and lock down the secondary.
If the rumors are true that Randy Moss is open to look at other teams I truely beleive that the Eagles should do what every they can to pick him up.  We can all remember how wonderful it was when T.O. and McNabb were connecting.  A healthy McNabb and Moss would be a great combo.

Keep Lito
Keeping Sheppard and moving Brown to strong safety makes sense to me. Mikel is the nickle and returns to special teams where he excelled. That's my first choice. If Lito's agent can find a trading partner (and let's face it, he's doing exactly that as we speak) that brings a big WR then let's explore it. But until...if...that happens I like having the best secondary in the NFL wearing midnight green!
