G Cobb sticks his neck out, says "Asante Samuel is an Eagle"
![]() |
G is sticking his neck out on this one. He's been blogging, doing camp reports, doing video podcasts ect all from his site in an attempt to make it an Eagles/Philly sports hub. One way to do that would be scooping everyone on the biggest free agent signing of the offseason. One way not to do it, is to be wrong. They have a lot of credibility on the line here.
I must say I find it very hard to believe. John Clayton isn't reporting this, Adam Schefter doesn't have it... I just doubt that people who write for GCobb.com have better sources than those guys.
PFT has even picked up G Cobb's report.
Update [2008-2-29 0:1:38 by JasonB]: John Clayton on ESPN at midnight says the Asante Samuel calls will start coming, "expect the Philadelphia Eagles to call very quickly."
Update [2008-2-29 0:19:14 by JasonB]: The St Petersburgh Times says Samuel is "bound for Philadelphia"
Update [2008-2-29 0:47:8 by JasonB]:I'm heading to bed. There's reports that the Saints have traded for Jet's LB Jonathan Vilma.I'm also hearing the Raiders are close to signing Giants S Gibril Wilson, who was rumored to be a target of the Eagles. Otherwise, not much else to report. Let's see what we wake up to.

Huh
-- They may try and find a decent return for him in trade, even though the Eagles have lost some leverage now.
-- Move Brown to safety in "base" packages. In nickel and dime, Brown/Lito/Samuel is the best package in the league. Keep in mind, the Eagles safeties in Jim Johnson's scheme don't always play the traditional FS/SS roles. With the zone blitzes, they've got to be smart and good tacklers, and Sheldon Brown fits that role perfectly. It would be interesting, anyway.
would be nice
BFH - As soon as Philly got on the Samuel merry-go-round, the Brown/Sheppard/Samuel scenerio you mentioned popped into my head. Our D needs another starting caliber corner. I like Q playing safety, but this would be great. Not only would we be starting Dawkins/Brown/Sheppard/Samuel, but in nickel and dime, we move Brown down to the third corner and bring in Q to play safety.
Also, this would give us great security in the case of a Dawkins or Sheppard injury. If Sheppard is out, Brown moves to the other starting corner, Q in as safety, and Hanson is now the nickel/dime corner. If Dawkins is out, Q comes in and everything else stays the same.
There was also some talk about the Pats, or anyone else, being interested in Sheppard if we get Samuel. IMO, this would put us in the same situation we are currently in... still in need of a third, starting quality, corner.
I also think that Brown and Sheppard would be happy with this scenerio. Both retain staring roles and will understand that this will make the unit better overall.
