Eagles Rumor Mill - Javon Walker
![]() |
An NFL source has told Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn that the Denver Broncos are likely to release unhappy wide receiver Javon Walker, who is due a $5.4 million roster bonus on March 4, and the Eagles are one of the teams interested in signing him.
Dissatisfied with his role in the Broncos' offense, Walker (6-3, 215) has made it known that he wants out of Denver. Because Walker is still under contract, the Eagles are not permitted to comment.
Back when Walker was traded to the Broncos, he was so close to deal with the Eagles that he'd taken a physical and agreed to a contract worth around $7 million a year.
I suppose smart money says that if the Eagles were so hot for Walker 2 years ago, they'd have some interest now. Not only is Walker a bigtime playmaker when healthy, he's played in the west coast offense his entire career.
The problem with Walker is that he suffered a major knee injury in 2005. He rebounded with a good year in 2006 with Denver, but was again hurt in 07 with another knee injury that required more surgery on the same knee he hurt in 05. Obviously, whatever teams look to sign Walker are going to have to be convinced he can get back on the field. There is some speculation that Walker wouldn't be able to pass a physical...

Yeah...
Walker isn't likely to accept a limited role in an offense if he's healthy, and the Broncos aren't likely to pay him a boatload of money to be unproductive.
Odds are he'll be somewhere else next year. And even if he is deemed fully healthy, his injury history will keep him from getting a big money deal. That's the kind of low-risk/high-reward combination I think we all can appreciate. If he's available, I would like to Eagles to take a look.
Receivers
But there are some interesting free agents out there that could definitely help us. We should get someone.
Assuming he's cut, Walker has put up the best numbers of any of them aside from Moss. I agree with BFH it could be a low/risk high-reward scenario.
D.J. Hackett, SEA and Bryant Johnson, AZ are both young, have good size and may be ready to break out.
Andre Davis, TEX has pretty good numbers for such few catches, he's got great speed & he's a really good KR.
Stallworth or Berrian could help us also. What about Jerry Porter.
It should be interesting to see who we actually pursue, if anyone.

It's a buyer beware situation
Incentives
That's nice, but....
I agree with Jason's opinion that Walker has too many question marks to be considered a top-shelf acquisition for Philly. If we do go after a wide receiver, they should also be able to return kicks. I think we have enough high-priced receivers now as it is and there is urgent need to fill other, less-glamorous positions.

Walkers good, but...
Make a splash for Donovan
This stuff about a returner... The Birds'll have 11-13 draft picks this year... At worst, as long as they get a Punt Returner w/one of those picks, they're OK, because JR Reed may not be a gamebreaker as a KR, but he's legitimate and effective.
