Breaking: Lito Sheppard given permission to seek trade

Lito to shuffle out of town?
NFL Network is reporting this afternoon that Eagles CB Lito Sheppard has been given permission to seek a trade/are shopping him. So far they seem to be the only source reporting this. If it gets corroborated, I'll be sure to post up a link.

This is an interesting development, but not necessarily a huge surprise. Pretty much anyone you read this offseason has the Eagles in the market for help in the secondary and one of the main reasons always cited is that fact that Lito can never stay healthy. There's no doubt that when he's healthy he's a great playmaker, but lately that hasn't been all that often. In the last 3 years, Lito has played 11,13, & 10 games respectively. Sheppard's cap number next year is $3.45 million and the Eagles would take a $2.9 million hit to trade him.

I must say, I hope this a sign on the part of the Eagles that injury prone players will simply no longer be tolerated. Injuries have frustrated me more than anything over the past several years and  it always seems to be the same guys. Lito is clearly one of them. In fact, my favorite thing about the drafting of Kevin Kolb was that the guy started 4 years in college and never missed a game.

There's also been some talk, namely from Sal Palantonio, that the Eagles could be in the market for free agent CB Asante Samuel.

Looks like the offseason is finally starting to heat up!

Cap Hit?
How do you determine the cap hit in a trade?

Signing bonus
The cap hit is whatever his remaining signing bonus proration is. That number gets immediately accelerated to the current cap.

Sheppard - Fitzgerald
Does this rumor have anything to do with the previous rumor about going after Fitzgerald?

by ajay on Feb 18, 2008 6:46 PM EST   0 recs

Doubtful
The Lito story is coming from both the NFL Network and ESPNews.  While it isn't always the case, the fact that two outlets in the mainstream media are reporting it means it was corroborated by the second one.

The Fitzgerald stuff is almost completely speculation.  The article on GCobb.com comes from Micah Warren, who claims a source in the organization.  He may very well have one, but it is uncorroborated.

The Asante Samuel stuff is only speculation.

I can totally understand this one
but Lito will always be the main part of one of the greatest plays in eagles history... If you're gone lito, thanks for that pick last year!
Its a new season!

Well
IMO our biggest need is defensive end. there have been times where we just rushed FOUR and if Cole doesnt pressure the QB a lot of times opposing teams woul dhave all day. More than a wide out, more than a CB we NEED jared allen to step in. That way if needed we could jsut rush 4. If anyone remembers at times we would rush 5-somtimes 6 and we would still get no pressure on the qb. The giants basically won the superbowl because of their 3 pass rushers. most of the team is garbage

Sounds Like..
he's not happy with his contract and wants to re-negotiate.
So the FO said ok go see what your value is.
Just heard this on 610 and if thats the case I doubt he's going anywhere. I don't see how they get rid of him unless they get another corner first which seems unlikely as well.

As for Jared Allen that would be the biggest shock of the off-season if he actually hit the market.

Value
Well if we trade him what type of compensation are we looking at, do you think?

by ajay on Feb 18, 2008 7:40 PM EST   0 recs

Lito
After his performance last year, it is hard to imagine Lito getting some huge contract somewhere.  He really stunk most of the year.  I know he was injured, but facts are facts.

and the fact is
despite his obvious talent the guy just can't stay healthy

Rumor
Apparently this rumor is not true.

It does look like Lito wants a new contract though, but after missing as many games as he has it's tough to have any bargaining leverage.

This is interesting
Because ESPN is saying that 2 separate teams confirmed that the Eagles were shopping Lito...

That's pretty strong corroboration. I'm not entirely sure I believe the Eagles here.
