An "Eagles want Larry Fitzgerald" rumor

Over on Gary "G" Cobb's site a writer of his is reporting that the Eagles are pursing a trade for Cardinals' WR Larry Fitzgerald. G has also talked about this rumor on his 610 WIP show.

I'm going to say to take this one with a grain of salt. Not to put down Cobb or his writers because I certainly hope they're correct in this case... but I'd feel a little more confident if it were guys like Schefter, Clayton, or Glazer reporting this one.

A source with knowledge of the situation has told me that the Philadelphia Eagles are going after Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald pretty hard.  Fitzgerald, 24, will be 25 years old when the 2008 season starts and has already been to two Pro Bowls (2005, 2007).

The Eagles have been widely criticized for not having enough playmaking receivers on offense.  Fitzgerald told 610 WIP sports radio in Philadelphia during Super Bowl week that the Eagles are on a short list of teams he'd like to play for if dealt (he backed off of that a bit during the Pro Bowl week).

A few weeks ago I posted the Fitzgerald audio that was referred to in the article.

Micah Warren?
I've read his articles on GCobb.com but I don't know how credible he is as far getting EAGLES insider info.
Apparently he is the Blast Magazine Sports editor. Uh Yeah.

I hope he is right too.
Williams or Fiztgerald would be sweet.

The road to victory

Safety
They have a very good cornerback tandem in Rod Hood and Antrel Rolle.  Hood was the #1 ranked CB by "success rate" in 2007 according to Football Outsiders.

They are rumored to be on the verge of cutting their free safety Terrance Holt.

But at the other safety spot they have one of the best in the NFL in Adrien Wilson.

In terms of a Sheppard/Fitzgerald trade, it doesn't make a lot of sense because the Cardinals already have two starting corners they are likely happy with.

Fitz
The Eagles could have some quick decisions to make.  The Cards need to either renegotiate Fitz or trade or cut him. Meanwhile Donte is coming on the market in just a few days.  What they don't want to happen is that they chase the big fish (Fitz) so long and he gets off the line, and all the other fish are gone by that time.   If there is a trade with the Cards for Fitz, I would think it would be offensive linemen or defensive linemen or linebackers.  The Cards are already loaded at corner and the skill positions on offense.

Trade
I hope they get either of these guys but hearing Tom Heckert talk on the Eagles website today with Dave Spadaro he said that receiver was not a "position of need" and argued that Brown and Curtis were the most productive receivers they've had here in a long time - which is true but probably isn't enough.

Someone remove the wool from their eyes
I'm not even going to get into that....

dmullin, you have a good point about chasing the big fish, but do you really think teams are lining up to take Donte? Is his stock higher than this time last year? I wouldnt think so

In the other thread, JasonB wrote that he doesnt believe the eagles on the lito thread... I dont believe them here. I guarantee you if they get a shot at a big name reciever they do it. They HAVE to know that they really do need some help there.

If I was a betting man I'd say Larry could be in green next year... and it could happen here pretty soon

Its a new season!
