Joe Gibbs retires

Joe Gibbs has stepped down as coach and president of the Washington Redskins today. Gibbs had one year remaining on a 5 year deal he signed upon his return to the NFL.

After the toughest season of his Hall of Fame career, one that tested his leadership like never before, Joe Gibbs is stepping down.

He resigned as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, three days after a playoff loss ended an inspirational late-season run that followed the death of safety Sean Taylor.

Gibbs will remain as a special adviser to owner Dan Snyder and was to discuss his resignation at an afternoon news conference at Redskins Park.

Gibbs has gone through tragedy both with the team in the form of Sean Taylor's murder and in his personal life with his grandson being diagnosed with Leukemia.

Gibbs also runs a multi-million dollar racing empire.

He's no doubt one of the greats and I say with the utmost respect that as an NFC East rival that I am both sad and happy to see him go.

Gibbs
Comparing the two coaching greats who recently returned (and left) the NFC East, I always respected Gibbs as a good coach, but thought he was a good person, too.

On the other hand, I think Parcells is a good coach and a great talent evaluator, but I also think he's a jerk.

Good luck, Joe.

For the skins, I could see them promoting Williams and Saunders and not making too many staff/scheme changes, or I could see Danny Boy trying to throw a ton of money at someone like Bill Cowher or Andy Reid.

I think
Gregg Williams has something in his contract that says they have to pay him a sum of money if he's not named the next head coach.

Williams
I do believe the skins have a commitment to Williams of some sort but The Danny certainly will have no qualms buying his way out of that.  I think even The Danny realizes that Williams is the other half of Norv Turner - the defensive half.  His personnel skills are just not suited to being a head coach in the NFL.  The kind of mind games he likes to play with his players - the stars in particular - just won't float in the NFL at that level anymore.

Now, as an Eagles fan, I hope it goes that way.  It will be very much like the Richie Pettibon experiment - who was Gibbs D-coordinator by the way.
