New Westbrook deal on the way?

This should be a no brainer.

A source has told Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn that Eagles management has approached Brian Westbrook and his agent, Fletcher Smith, about possibly restructuring the running back's contract.

Westbrook has three years remaining on a five-year extension that he signed in 2005. He is scheduled to earn $4.5 million ($3 million plus $1.5 roster bonus) next season, $3.5 million in 2009 and $4.5 million in 2010.

Westbrook led the NFL this year in yards from scrimmage, set team records for both yards from scrimmage and receptions and yet there are 12 running backs making more than him. This is certainly a case where Westbrook has well outplayed the contract he was given. Giving Westbrook he new deal would not only reward a guy for a job well done and foster some goodwill in the lockeroom, but Reuben Frank argues that it could also make the Eagles a more attractive place for free agents.

So why would the Eagles approach Westbrook now? A few reasons.

To keep Philadelphia an attractive destination for free agents, the Eagles need to continue to be perceived as a franchise willing to pay players fair market value.

Nice
I think we all will let out a sigh of relief if and when this happens.  This team has enough soap opera issues without having the media feasting on an "Unhappy Westbrook" theme in 2008.

That thought really makes me shudder.  Please use some common sense here, guys.

Oh good!
Not only is it great for the team and the fans, but it makes me a little less nervous about the 1933-throwback Westbrook jersey I bought in October and the green Westbrook jersey my wife bought me for Christmas.
