This one is on Andy

Hopefully Andy is looking for an NFL caliber returner
It wasn't Greg Lewis' fault. It wasn't JR Reed's fault. It wasn't the fault of the defense who played fantastic. It wasn't the fault of the offense, who while they struggled  against a very good Packer D, did enough to win the game. They did, after all, score more points than the opposing offense...

No, this one is on Andy Reid. Because it was Andy Reid who felt he didn't need a guy on his roster who had fielded even one punt in an NFL game. At least Bloom, who also hadn't fielded an NFL, was a guy who specialized in it in college. From what I understand, Greg Lewis had never returned punts and JR Reed only may have done it a few times in college.  I just don't understand how a guy like Reid, who's been around football for as long as he has, would basically say "Meh, anyone can return punts. You, over there... You've never caught a punt but... what the hell? You're our punt returner! Oh you also looked terrible in preseason? So what?! You`re our guy!" Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to hold Lewis and Reed totally blameless... They've been in the NFL long enough to know how and when to call for a fair catch or to catch a punt. That said, when a coach put guys in positions they don't belong in he is setting them up to fail and make mistakes.

There's only 16 games in a season, and thanks to what I think was arrogance on the part of our coach we gifted one to the Packers. At least you can say on the McNabb INT that led to a FG, that the Packers' D made a play. However, the other 2 were absolute gifts. It has to be pretty heartbreaking for your defense when the opponent doesn't have to move an inch on offense to get all 13 of their points on the day.

To take it a step further and heap even more blame on the coach... He happens to have a guy standing on the sidelines who is not only proven himself capable of fielding a punt, but happens to be pretty damn good at it. Brian Westbrook. I understand why he might not be the everyday punt returner, but when the game is on the line how on earth could Andy not send #36 out there?

It's time for Andy to admit his mistake and do something about it. Lewis didn't just blow it on the first punt, he looked bad on others as well. JR Reed is not a punt returner, and frankly I'm not sure he's even a kick returner. I thought he found some holes, but looked rather slow. At this point I don't really see a place for Greg Lewis on this roster. Brown, Curtis, & Avant are your top WRs. I think Baskett is more than capable of being a 4th WR. A 5th WR who can't do much else doesn't have a whole lot of value. Get rid of Lewis and go sign anyone who has proven he can field a punt. Go down to Chickie and Pete's and get Reno Mahe if you have to.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when a guy who can do little more than make fair catches and fall down is a drastic improvement over the current punt return situation.

Very much agreed
While most of the eagles blogs, and even media, agreed with getting rid of Jeremy Bloom, I didn't see the reason why. I thought it was a mistake because he, at least, gave the Eagles a chance to make a big play in the return game. People said he shied away from contact and couldn't make break a tackle. But he had speed and experience.

On GLew. I've never understood why he's on the team. When he got the chance to play after TO blew up, he proved he was a fraud. They say he can cover kicks well, but seriously he's 190 - I'm sure he can be replaced.

It will be interesting to see what they do this week. There's got to be a punt returner that they can sign and get rid of Glew and his dumb ass smirk.

I yearned
For the returns of Reno Mahe, where at least you knew he would wave his hands in the air during a punt in flight and catch the damn thing.

Seriously, I thought that even a middle school kid could figure out that trying to field punts in massive traffic was hazardous to one's health and the team's well-being.  I guess Greg and JR missed the memo on that day in the 7th grade.

As for Andy, well, I was scratching my head at best and screaming at the TV at worst.  The only thing that saved me today was that I set up two TV's in my living room to watch the Phillies win while watching the Eagles find as many ways as they could to shoot themselves in the foot.

This was definitely a coaching loss.  Bad use of Timeouts - typical of Andy, poor situational playcalling - who calls for multiple screen/swing passes on consecutive goal to go plays?  And let's not forget that Greg Lewis was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty for trying to trip someone after the play.

In short, they deserved to lose, because they did everything in their power to give the game away.

Yes on the swing passes
At least throw the ball in the end zone. It's very easy to be an armchair quarterback, but that was pathetic.

Even more pathetic, Eagles get the ball at the Pack 38 in a tie game with four minutes to play and can't gain 5 yards to get into Akers field goal range. Offensive line got embarrassed on that series.

yeah seriously
thats still the part of the game, looking back, that bothers me the most. And its funny how much we emphasized running the ball, and then we did it at the worst time

Right on a number of counts
I mentioned that about the swing passes on the goal to go situation at the time on the thread below.

And My God is it pathetic that season after season they seem to piss away timeouts.  Reid may be great at the x's and o's and the charts and planning and whatnot but he continues to seem to have trouble at coaching during the game.

Even the fact that he didn't throw the red flag after the GLewis muff-touchdown, or at least call an official over, showed a certain slowness.  It probably was what they called it, but there might have been several things he could have argued/asked about: (1) as someone asked below (and the announcers never once mentioned on Faux), even on a non fair-catch, isn't the receiver supposed to be given room to catch the ball, and (2) couldn't the Packers attempt to scoop the ball up at the seven, sending it into the endzone, be considered "advancing the muff"?  As I said, the officials would probably have ruled what they ruled, and there was nothing necessarily challengeable, but it was worth a conversation, no?

My Bad
It was Avant who was flagged for the unnecessary roughness...I had said it was Greg Lewis.

by The Don of DC on Sep 9, 2007 7:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sigh...
You're right.  Andy's got to take the heat for this one, but at the same time some one needs to get cut for this.  Either Lewis or Reed has to go.  Bloom or Mahe are necessarily god-sends, but at least he held on to the football.

How can a team that has the foresight to bring back Koy Detmer exclusively to hold miss that perhaps a kick return specialist might be a necessity?

This team does so many things well.  It's just so frustrating to see them lose for the same reasons over and over again (dumb penalties, special teams mistakes, hubris).  That's what makes it so hard to be a Iggles fan sometimes.  They're the model of consistency, in both good and bad ways.

All that being said the defense played well the offense clicked at times and the NFC looks terrible.  So barring injury we should still be in the thick of things (please be healthy Lito... please).

Heck, give Moats a try
Can the punt return game get worse with him in there?  Our defense was very good today and the offense was average.  The special teams really killed us today.

Moats
Probably wouldn't move all that much... Probably a fair catch every time, in fact. What with the broken ankle and all.

Whoops
Forgot about that.  Sorry.

Totally Agree
That was a deplorable effort on punt returns. Judging form his performances, I didn't expect anything big from Jeremy Bloom, but we knew he'd be at least average returning kicks.

So we cut him to sign...JR Reed? What the hell? This guy was terrible on kickoff returns from day one, and I don't know if he's ever so much as caught a punt before.

And don't get me started on Greg Lewis...this guy can't even catch a 5-yard slant pass, let alone a 50-yard punt. His lack of judgment was absolutely horrifying.

Lewis and Reed simply don't have enough talent and/or experience to fulfill their roles on this team, and in my opinion should be cut as soon as replacements can be found.

The #2 punt returner
Isn't Westbrook the #2 punt returner exactly for situations like yesterday? If a tie game late in the fourth quarter isn't a crucial situation, then what is?

by Eagles301256 on Sep 10, 2007 12:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont think either of them should be cut
Im not sure how this will work with roster spots, but i actually think JR does a resonable job on kick returns (punts are obviously another matter)... Plus he helps out a short handed safety crew

and why all the hate for glew? Seriously, I dont really get it. Is it the duck walk? The guy has been a really good possession receiver for us in the past

Its right now when i look back and wish that we could have won the randel el sweepstakes

They're both pretty bad
The only reason Lewis is on the team is because they thought he could return punts. It seems like he can't.

The only reason Reed was brought in is because they cut Bloom (and yeah, I guess to be the 5th safety).

They both failed miserably in essentially the exact roles they were brought in to fill. If Lewis is going to be a disaster returning punts, he shouldn't be here -- my understanding is that it's the only reason he made the team.

We do need a 5th safety, so I guess I can't really advocate cutting Reed, but Lewis? We don't have anything invested in this guy, do we? Bring in someone who has legit NFL size, strength, and football common sense.

Hey Reno, want your old job back?
There is no time to 'develop' a punt returner.  We have to acquire one.  There isn't one on the practice squad, either.  So in the absence of a legit returner, why not call back Mahe?

Here's an absolute desperateion plea if all else fails... how about asking Brian Mitchell to un-retire?  He is one of the all time leaders and did have 9 touchdowns returning punts.....

Didn't take long...
"Reid said the team is exploring options, one that reportedly is former Eagles' return man Reno Mahe."

I figure next week we'll see Westbrook return some, and he'll probably give Reed a chance at redemption...but I don't doubt that a phone call was placed to Reno.

I never liked Mahe, but I'd rather take his consistant mediocrity, and sure hands, over Reed or Lewis any day.

Mahe...
did break a decent kick-off return once, I remember it like it was yesterday. He got it to our 45. I'd rather see my little sister out there returning kicks than lewis or reed right now though, i can't believe we lost a game because; a. we don't know when to wave our hands in the air and catch it, and b. we don't know when to wave our hands in the air and leg it in the opposite direction. At least a 15 year old female knows how to do part b.

one game
The return game cost us this game, obviously.  The team took a risk in committing so many returns to Jeremy Bloom in the preseason.  They took another risk when they selected Greg Lewis, a guy with very little experience in the role, to return punts in the Green Bay game.  I think the next decision is a tough one as well - whether to sign a player with experience in the role or to allow somebody currently on the team to gain the experience in practice and as the season progresses.  Despite the hue and cry from the Eagles's faithful, I wouldn't necessarily think the latter plan was a bad idea - think of how many punts whoever is chosen will be fielding just this next week.

From a season long perspective, however, I am much more concerned with the performance of the offense than with the return game.  This was supposed to be the team's strength?  The Eagles will not win very often this year in games in which the offense tallies 13 first downs.  And no sense of the moment.  I was a Donovan McNabb apologist throughout the stretch run last year, but that offense came up with big plays when they needed them.  This offense couldn't take advantage of its opportunities, whether great field position or first and goal.  Was anybody feeling confident of the team's ability to get into field goal range had Reed not muffed the punt?  This unit may get its act together, but I'm getting a little nervous.

It won't happen, but my view is that the Eagles could put Greg Lewis back to return punts for the rest of the season and do fine.  If they put yesterday's offense on the field for the rest of the year, though, this team is in big trouble.

Yes
The offense was terrible, too.  It reminded me of the Jacksonville game last year, where McNabb just couldn't complete a pass, but they threw and threw and threw anyway.

Thanks Andy
I'm so glad I flew out to Green Bay to watch that.

Every time I think I've seen every ridiculous way this team can lose, they prove me wrong.

And it is on the coaching staff for putting inexperienced guys back there.  But even those inexperienced have to know when to fair catch.

Ridiculous.
