It's officially Eagles season

I know not all Eagles fans who read this blog are also Phils fans, but I would guess that most are. So for those people... The Phillies just ushered in the official start to the football season.

Oh god.
That's a bad one.  I'm an Orioles fan (thus ready for football season since...well the end of last football season), so I've been telling my wife (a diehard Phillies fan) things like  "At least they didn't give up 30 runs" or "They didn't get no-hit, did they?".  It doesn't help.

The Phils are weird and painful to watch this year...every time I ( the casual Phillies observer) think they're cooked, they show amazing heart and resilience, and every time I think they're in great shape, they choke like the proverbial Philadelphia sports team.

It's time now to seal the deal. -- Donnie Mac

Thank God for football
I had the day off today and watched the game on and off.  When it was 8-2 after 7, I said to myself "surely even this bullpen can't blow an 8-2 lead" and left for the gym.  Of course the game was also on at the gym and I was forced to watch Gordon & Myers humiliate themselves there.  Just an extremely frustrating and disappointing team.  I have to admit, last week, it felt strange being more excited about the Phillies immediate future than the Eagles.  It's nice to see that everything is now back to normal.

Remember 1993?

When it was 8-2 after 7, I said to myself "surely even this bullpen can't blow an 8-2 lead" and left for the gym.

Game 6 of the World Series, Phillies up by 5 wasn't it late in the game, bases loaded, Dutch up at the plate slams one way out of here ... except that it goes two feet foul.  I looked up and said "Game over.  There's no way Mitch Williams can be trusted with a lead that small.  We needed that possible 9 run lead."  And so it was.

When are Philly teams going to learn that when you've got your foot on the other guys throat after beating the ever living crap out of him, that's the time to bring out the baseball bat and start pounding his brains out too, not letting him back in the fight?

so painful
I was watching the game with one of my friends and around the 4th inning, while they still had the 5-0 lead, I said half-kidding, half-seriously, "with the Phils, they can come back from a 5 run deficit or lose a 5 pt lead. I just gotta wait til the end of the 9th to see what this one is gonna do" and he said, "yeah, usually if they're good at the 7th, they're good for the game" and of course they give up two runs in the 6th and we just groaned, having this horrible feeling of the inevitable...

I love the Phils, but they just seem to know the right way to break my heart.

Sweet spot
The Phils seem to be most comfortable trailing the division by 4-5 games.

But at least this team has been fun to watch this year. Even when they lose it's still a good time at the park. I hate saying that by the way.

haha
i was saying that for the last couple of weeks, to talk myself up during some rough stretches, but now i don't even care anymore.  as much as i love utley/rollins/rowand, i don't think i can even watch their games anymore.  ruined all the goodwill from the mets series

Wait'll next year...
I still have my World Series Champion shirt from 1980. I swear someday I'll wear it when the Phillies win it all again. Well, maybe my son will...

not necessarily done
Maybe it's being 3,000 miles away from it.  Maybe it's because I don't watch the games (just follow on the web and on XM when I can).  My view is that they're not done yet and that this particular loss is no worse than any other.  If the Phils win 90 games, they have a 90% chance of being in.  This has changed very little since opening day.  At this point, it will take a good run, but I think they can do it.

17 of 23?
It ain't going to happen dave.

23 games left, they should win about 13 of them.  86-76 for the year.

There's almost no way the Padres and D-Backs don't win 11 of 24 and 10 of 22 respectively.  And the Dogers would have to fail to win 14 of 24.

Your Philadelphia Philles - 26th out of 30 teams in runs against.  Only team over .500 to allow over 700 runs.  Has allowed 49 more runs than any other NL team over .500 and 80 more runs than any other wild card competitor.  29th out of 30 teams in W-L record for 1 run games.

On the bright side
The Phillies do actually appear to have 3-4 good pitchers now - Hamels, Kendrick, Lohse, Meyers.
