Are these the cuts?

Update [2007-9-1 11:10:31 by BleedGreen]: The Daily News has reportedly confirmed through separate sources that Jeremy Bloom and Dirk Johnson have indeed been cut. Whether the rest of the list is real remains to be seen.

Thanks to Eagle Scout for compiling the list. There is some controversy however as the Eagles claim that this list was apparently put up on their site by mistake and that they are just "dummy names." The problem is that the list is entirely believable. Surprises would be Jeremy Bloom, Dirk Johnson, & Ian Scott. We'll know just how real it is by 4p tomorrow when teams must officially be down to a 53 man roster.

Nate Ilaoa (RB)
Jason Davis (FB)
Jeremy Cain (FB/LS)
Jeremy Bloom (WR)
J.J. Outlaw (WR)
Michael Gasperson (WR)
Zac Collie (WR)
Lee Vickers (TE)
Jonathan Palmer (T)
Jasper Harvey (C)
Jacob Hobbs (G)
Pat McCoy (T)
Marques Murrell (DE)
Mauricio Lopez (DT)
Ian Scott (DT)
Akeem Jordan (LB)
Dedrick Roper (LB)
Dustin Fox (CB)
Nick Graham (CB)
Marcus Paschal (S)
Erick Harris (S)
Dirk Johnson (P)

I'm not
I thought he did a good job in preseason. Plus, I think it was going to come down to him and Nick Graham.

E for Exceeds Expectations
When he was drafted Barksdale was supposed to be destined for the practice squad as a long term project. Instead he's played his way into serious consideration to make the team. That's far above expectations.

I thought he was quite good
earlier in the preseason, maybe not so good later.

Bloom
is not a surprise, for Andy to say he did 'OK' was a death knell.

Not right
The list shows 22 cuts, with the mystery man missing from the list - WR/KR Bill Sampy.

Surely they aren't keeping him over Bloom (or Jordan or Murrell or Ilaoa or Davis or Graham or Paschal or Collie).

This makes me question if the list is real.

A bigger question, assuming the list is essentially right (and that Sampy is gone but they are expecting to make a trade or waiver pick-up), the roster of 53 would include:

3 QB
3 RB
1 FB
5 WR
3 TE
2 C
4 G
3 OT
5 DE
5 DT
6 LB
5 CB
4 S
1 K
1 P
1 ST
1 KR/PR

Making that into a gameday roster seems difficult given a probably desire to have Hunt, Justice and Celek active and to get everyone needed on Special Teams available.  An active 45 would have to be:

2 QB
3 RB
1 FB
4 WR
3 TE
2 C
2 G
3 T
4 DE
4 DT
6 LB
4 CB
3 S
1 K
1 P
1 LS
1 KR/PR

I have a feeling its going to be tough to have Celek active, because I'd think they are going to want all 5 WR's active so Avant, Lewis, and Baskett can play Special Teams, since I'd imagine the group to pull special teams coverage and returns from would be 9-10 of the following:

WR Avant, Lewis, Baskett
CB Hanson, Barksdale
S Mikell
LB Bradley, Daniels, McCoy, Gaither, Gocong
DE Thomas
FB Tapeh
RB Hunt

Sampy
There's some debate as to what his deal is. He's been hurt most all of preseason and could possibly be moved to IR. That wouldn't have to happen until 4 tomorrow.

Sampy
If he goes to IR, they only need to cut 21 to get down to 53.  So the list is still wrong.

Maybe
There's always the possibility that they think a guy like Bethel Johnson or some other kick returner type. I totally get what your saying, but there's explanations to be made.

Question
Supposing the list is real, would they be denying this because Reid hasn't personally told these players they are cut?

by brooksy on Aug 31, 2007 5:44 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would think so
Either that or they have a trade in the works, which is very unlikely.

False News
Maybe the list is bogus because its an attempt to help a trade happen, as in, "Here's the guys we are going to cut which doesn't include the guy you want ... whoops you weren't supposed to see that!"

Punter to the Patriots
The Eagles have two competent punters.  The Patriots just had 4 or 5 in for tryouts today.  Can we steal a 7th rounder from them for Dirk?

I'm a skeptic
The typical media manipulation move is to say you're comfortable with what you've got or to say you're not interested in a guy who you really are interested in.  No one really gets hurt in the process.  Here, the people being impacted are those getting cut.  I just don't think they'd do something like that.
