Michael Strahan to retire?

Michael Strahan did not report to Giants camp today and his agent and Giants' GM Jerry Reese say that he's contemplating retirement.

"Last night, I talked to his agent (Tony Agnone) and his agent said to me -- this was about seven o'clock -- (Strahan) was contemplating retiring," Reese said. "That's all I know right now. We haven't spoken to him. We'll get more details about it. We'll put him on reserve/did not report to camp."

Over at Big Blue View EtVal is not happy.

This is not good news. Thanks a lot, Michael, for making a decision at a time when the Giants are screwed now in terms of structuring their defense if you decide not to play.

He also goes on to detail some possible solutions the Giants' might have to what would be a gaping hole on the left side of their defense.

I, for one, don't buy it. Strahan has been after a new contract this entire offseason and he wouldn't be the first older player in search of a new deal to contemplate retirement. He doesn't come off like the bad guy by holding out, but he achieves the same result. Bottom line is that Strahan needs the money. He is due $4 million this year and isn't going to leave that on the table. He just forked over $15 million to his ex wife(despite the fact that she has zero career sacks) and is on the hook for 18k a month in child support. I'd bet almost anything that this retirement talk is no more than a ploy to get a new deal or released.

I can't say I wouldn't be glad not to see Strahan's gap toothed grin twice a year. Although I would miss the classic Runyan v Strahan battles.

Ugh...
The fake retirement talk is the most annoying stuff in all of sports.  My respect for Strahan has plummeted.  The self serving jackwholes who hold their teams hostage are pathetic.  If I was Goodell, I would force any player who says they are thinking about retiring into actually retiring.  At least hes too old for us to be subjected to 10+ years of this Favrian attitude.
