Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

It's the offseason... Get your lists out!

Making lists is fun, reading lists are fun. Any "how to increase traffic to your site/blog" article will always tell you to make lists. "The top 5 reasons blah blah... The 8 best blah blahs of all time..." So in a time such as now when the NFL news cycle has more or less screeched to a halt, everyone is making lists.

Come to to think of it, maybe I should make my own list... Of lists.

First there was Peter King's crazy list where he ranked all starting QBs in the NFL. That one got everyone talking... Try googling it. There's pages and pages of responses from the blogosphere about the piece. Well played Mr King. Well played sir. Still, McNabb behind Vince Young, Tony Romo, & Jay Cutler. Are you mad?!

Here's a fun one. The Sporting News ranked the top WR corps in the NFC. The Eagles 3rd best passing offense apparently = 9th best WRs. Figure that one out.

It's not all bad though, the Sporting News did rank the Eagles #2 in their list of the top offensive tackle tandems in the NFC.

If ranking players on the field isn't quite your thing, how about some owner rankings? They ranked Jeff Lurie #6 in the NFL, one below Daniel Snyder. Below?!? The guy whose team has won 6 of the last 7 division titles is behind the guy who has never won one? Plus, the Panthers owner is #3? Ok, take a deep breath. It's just a list.

I was happy to see that Eagles were not listed among the Ten most dysfunctional offseasons list.

There was however a list that I was pretty surprised to see the Eagles on. The list of teams with at least ten million in cap space left. According to the article, the Birds are still $11.5 million under the cap. How about throwing some of that toward a veteran strong safety?

There was the top 50 players in the NFL list done by Pete Prisco that featured only 2 Eagles, Shawn Andrews and Donovan McNabb.

No Eagles on the Fox Sports 9 most underrated stars in the league list.

Although ESPN feels that Reggie Brown is one of the the most underrated WRs in the NFL.

Pro Football Talk has gotten in on the action with their list entitled "The Top 25 players in the last 25 years." They are only have 24 & 25 so far... so it's a bit early to bash for lack of Birds. By the way, that list was in response to another top 25 in 25 done by USA today. They're up to #15 and still have no Eagles. Something tells me that at least the Minister of Defense will be in the top 5...

So that was my list, of lists. Maybe this week we'll do an actual list, of... something.

As to the 11 and change in cap room...
Don't forget the Eagles #1 M.O.; resigning young guys mid-season.  That cap space will be used to lock up Justice, Bunkley, or maybe even L.J.

So be careful on the "cheap" connotation, its the way we do business and its proven successful.

The reason that it's surprising
is because all the stories before free agency had the Eagles right up against the cap...

Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing.

Hopefully L.J. Smith
The Eagles (ok, Banner) seem to feel LJS has contract demands that are out of line with his true value to the team, which is a little different than saying he's out of line with the market for TE's. Several TE's have recently gotten deals well in excess of what the Eagles want to pay LJS.

That doesn't mean the market has gone crazy - after all, those numbers were set by other NFL teams - and it doesn't necessarily mean the Eagles are out of line - not if they can get the production they want somewhere else without paying market price for a young veteran guy with LJS's numbers. I think that's a big if. The choices for teams looking to sign a young productive vet at that position are extremely limited.

Worthless prediction: If LJS comes into training camp recovered from his surgery and in shape, goes out and has a few good games, the Eagles will look to improve their offer enough to re-sign him in the middle of the season.

It might get used on Justice. The Eagles seem to be pretty high on him based on reports out of minicamp. Seems awfully early to extend a 2nd year backup, but yes, the Eagles have a history of showing they believe in their young picks by locking them up awfully early.

Worthless prediction #2: It won't be Bunkley. Not yet. He has to prove himself this season.

Owners
The article's take on Snyder is priceless.
But hey, at least he's trying. Snyder will get it right eventually, if only because he won't settle for anything less -- a quality far too owners possess. And he is pulling in an enormous profit in the meantime, thanks to his innovative marketing strategies.

Eventually could be a long, long time.

As for those innovative marketing strategies, ask a Redskins fan what it costs to park at the stadium. You can't deny the team is making money, but there's nothing admirably innovative about jacking up prices as high as your fans will stand.

How bad is it?
And for reference, what's typical Eagles parking?  I think we paid $10 to park at the citizen's bank park lot last season, but I could be wrong since I split the cost with a couple friends.

Hogs
Parking was $25 a couple years back.

Hogs Haven makes some good points on the article and gives a Redskins' fan's-eye view of Snyder, here.

I also notice Jerry Jones got the #2 spot in the article. What's up with that?
