Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

The Linc 6.28.07

This pic does nothing for Carson Palmer
Did you think it seemed like there were less penalties in NFL last year? You aren't crazy. (Iggles Blog)

McNabb did something on Sportscenter to shill for the new Diehard movie (700 Level)

Takeo Spikes is in training to become the next Tiki Barber. (Philly.com)

A pretty well put together video documentation of the rebirth that was the 2nd half of the 2006 Eagles season. (YouTube)

BGN reader 700 level pointed this out earlier, it seems that Bethel Johnson is still listed as the Eagles #1 KR on their new interactive depth chart feature on the new site. (Inside the Iggles)

ESPN is ruining sports. Apparently this is becoming quite a popular opinion. (GCobb.com)

Maybe it's just because we are in the absolute  slowest period of the NFL schedule and reporters are looking for anything to write about... but this Tomme Harris-McNabb-Grossman thing is getting a ridiculous amount of ink. (Chicago Sun-Times)

It seems that more people are watching soccer than hockey these days. (Rumors & Rants)

Carson Palmer needs to do a better job choosing his endorsements. Who would allow that ad to be printed? (With Leather)

This calls for a poll
Who would rather watch live soccer than hockey?

Me vote soccer. Football. Whatever.

The ratings war.
Comparing an International game like the Gold Cup Final to a Domestic League game is hardly comparing the same thing. A more fair comparison might be the MLS Final vs. Stanley Cup Final.

Furthermore, I think the article shows a huge difference in viewership between a gold cup final featuring Panama, and a gold cup final featuring Mexico. The difference is quite vast. One would think the large numbers are not supporters of US soccer, but Mexican soccer.  The  NHL still outstrips the MLS in revenue generated despite its crappy TV deal w/ VS, as well as fan attendence.  While the NHL is trending down and soccer is trending up, I think the differences are quite large.

Exactly
MLS would kill for the attendance the NHL gets. I've always said that soccer is all about the atmosphere of the crowd. Watching those champion's league games on ESPN and hearing the Liverpool fans singing the whole game gave me chills.

Interesting, but
not quite what I was curious about - would you personally rather attend a live hockey game? or soccer? Just curious, folks.

Two part answer
If it's an MLS game vs NHL game

NHL game for sure.

If it's a European or South American soccer match vs NHL?

I'll go soccer.

I will skip South American soccer.
I can do w/o the horns and confetti and streamers and flairs.

Also can do w/o Italian football and the Ultras, and the flairs and the Vespas being dropped from the 2nd deck...

Good point
I'd have to agree. That's how to compare apples to apples when you're talking about the quality of play.

Live?
As in being there?  Normally, I'd say hockey.  I think hockey is the sport that translates least well to TV, just because so much of the hitting and the strategy of positioning the players (I'm not a hockey expert by any means) happens away from the puck and doesn't make the TV feed.

Even going to an AHL game is a really fun sports experience.

But...given the chance to go to a soccer game in a country where it's taken more seriously than in the US, I'd gladly go.

I haven't been too impressed with the World Cup games I've watched on TV, It seems to feature a very boring, defensive style of play that doesn't make for good viewing.  Being there among the crazy fans would be fun, though.

I used to watch the occasional EPL game at the Dark Horse on South St. when I lived in Philly, and I think they have a more attacking style of play that's more fun to watch.  I'd also love to attend one of those games.  Haven't seen any other Euro league games to comment on.

For a taste
try and catch one of the big euro clubs on a preseason tour when they come stateside.  I know Rangers, Chelsea and Aston Villa are all coming this summer.  The expats here create a decent amount of atmosphere, not approaching competitive games back in Europe, but much better than an MLS/USL/College game.
