McNabb for Briggs Trade Un-Rumor

[editor's note, by BleedGreen] promoted from diaries. and let me just say... Let's be clear about this. Don McKee is simply incredibly bored and can't think of anything to write about, so he decided to basically act as if he was some crazy fan calling sports radio with a wacky trade idea and pass it off as a column in a major metro newspaper. This is something I've gotten pretty upset about in the past. These big net sites like Yahoo and others like it don't do a whole lot of reporting on their own. More often than not they act as news aggregators for local papers and AP stories. So a local columnist writes an opinion "what if" piece like this one and yahoo and other sites just pick it up like he's written a news column. Then they label with a headline calling it a "rumor." It's just incorrect and irresponsible and I really wish more people would call them out on it. This has happened several times this offseason where a local writer has written an opinion piece on what he thinks the Eagles should do and the national or web media picks it up and labels it a "rumor." Rumors are things journalists hear from sources, not when a columnist opines about what thinks the team should do.

In McKees' defense he even titled the story "A McNabb trade (In Theory)", when Yahoo! picks up the story it becomes titled "NFL Rumors Super shuffle? McNabb, Briggs swap makes sense". No indication that this is just a thought on the part of a writer. They specifically label it a rumor! In an age where people unfortunately just read headlines, this is wildly irresponsible.

Anyway, I digress... onto the actual story. Thanks to Andrew for being on top of this.

First McKee opines in the Inky, then Yahoo actually picks it up like a real story!!!

Yo!  Here we go!

Wild and crazy rumor time!

Eagles to ship McNabb to Chicago for rights to Lance Briggs.

Apparently this is part of the effort to build an all Weakside Linebacker Team.

I'm speechless at this baseless rumor mongering by Don McKee.

Must be a REALLY slow day.

Preposterous
It wouldn't terribly surprise me if McNabb ends up in Chicago at some point.  But this team is built to contend right now.  If they were thinking of trading McNabb, they would have done everything possible to keep Garcia, I think.

Did Takeo Spikes get abducted by aliens
while I wasn't paying attention? I like Briggs, I think he'd be a great addition at linebacker, but where does he fit in this defense?

This just in!
Reid traded to the Sixers in exchange for the rights to Sammy Dalembert! Said Jeff Lurie: "If he can just stand around cluelessly in the endzone like he does under the basket, maybe he'll catch a ball eventually or something. Fuckit, who wants a hit of this?"

No, it does not make sense!
How can Yahoo say this makes sense?  The Eagles have to think that they're one of the top five (if not better) teams in the NFC RIGHT NOW.

Why would they send a franchise QB (even if they no longer believe he's THEIR long-term answer at QB) to  the defending NFC Champion, which just happens to be a good QB away from addressing their most obvious weakness?

They can't afford to throw this year away as a rebuilding year, because they're so close to being in the hunt right now.  They take a step backwards this season with either Feeley or Kolb as the starter.  Getting Lance Briggs doesn't help the team as much as losing Donovan McNabb (and sending him to what may be one of their biggest rivals for NFC Supremacy) hurts them.

Unless there's just something they're not telling us about McNabb's rehab, trading him now would be idiotic.

Spadaro
Granted, we have to take whatever Dave Spadaro says with a grain of salt because it's his job to be the mouthpiece of the organization, this is about as far out on a limb as I've ever seen him go in addressing a rumor:

Usually he'll say he can't comment on personnel issues.

but
it seems like he's been doing that a lot over the past month or so

Irresponsible journalism
really pisses me off. Opinions are on thing, but when jerks like this spread rumors just for the sake of having something to talk about, that's wrong. Must be the 20+ years I spent working for newspapers that has me ticked off about this. Of course, if the Eagles really want to trade Donovan and let a rookie 2nd-round pick start at QB, that would be fine with us Giants fans! LOL

I don;t know what annoys me more
The columnist who wrote the story or places like Yahoo.

I have no idea why someone would go buy a paper to read ridiculous trade ideas that they could read any on message board or hear on any sports talk radio show. SO the fact that he'd dedicated however many inches of space in a major metro newspaper to completely made up trade idea he had is hard to understand... At least he made no bones about it being a fantasy scenario that he made up.

To me the height of poor journalism is for yahoo to take his content, re-title it, and pass it off as a "rumor." It's incomprehensible.

I work in broadcasting myself and I;d never consider doing something like this.

McKee is irrelevant
Andrew - good to see we're on the same page.  McKee needs to retire, he's 100% irrelevant, which is why he's probably making stuff up instead of getting actual scoops.
