Clearly this guy came out of no where and is not a guy many people no much about. So here's some scouting reports on the guy who appears to be the future QB of this franchise.
Note how many times the term "durable" is mentioned in these scouting reports... He's been a starter from day one in college and has never missed a game.
Kevin Kolb 6'3, 220 lbs.
Arm strength is more than adequate and he has a very quick release...Strong and has a solid build...Protects the ball and has a good career TD / INT ratio...Durable and has a lot of experience...Solid athlete who can run a little and hurt defenses with his feet...Has everything you look for from an intangibles standpoint in terms of leadership, brains and work ethic...Extremely productive throughout his career.
Weaknesses:
Does not have the ideal height that you look for...Passing numbers were inflated by playing in a passing system...Accuracy is dodgy, especially on deep balls...Gets too many passes batted down at the line...Worked mostly out of the shotgun...Is going to have to learn how to run a pro style offense and read defenses...Didn't always play against top competition...Mechanics and throwing motion need work.
Notes:
Last name is pronounced "Cobb"...Burst onto the scene as a true freshman and ultimately became one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history... There is a lot to like about this guy but he is a tough prospect to project and he'll have to fight the "System Quarterback" label...Could surprise and end up starting for someone.
SUMMARY
I like Kevin a lot. I think he's the #3 QB and a 2nd Rd player. I see him as a starting NFL QB.
Kolb has good size and build for a NFL quarterback and excels at throwing short to mid-range passes. He can throw the ball on the move and is a threat to run with the ball if necessary. Kolb is a great leader and has started for four years at Houston. He would be an ideal West Coast quarterback once he learned the system.
Weaknesses:
Kolb did not play in a pro style offense at Houston and would have to learn the NFL style of progression and reads. He is unlikely to become an elite vertical passer. He must work on improving his mechanics, as he has a tendency to wind up too much. Kolb has as tendency to go to a three quarters delivery that causes the ball to get batted down at the line of scrimmage.
Overall:
Kolb was productive at Houston, but that was in a shotgun based, short throwing offense. He would have to take the time to learn the pro style offense, and his lack of arm strength will limit his ceiling. The question on Kolb will be if his success was due to the system or if he can mature into a solid NFL starter.
NEGATIVES: Takes most of his snaps from the shotgun and benefits from a three-receiver system. Tends to direct his throws. Stares down the primary target.
ANALYSIS: A signal caller with a good degree of upside, Kolb offers the physical skills to play at the next level. Will need time to get accustomed to an NFL offense yet a solid developmental prospect.
PROJECTION: Middle Third Round
Poised pocket passer with nice size. Takes control of the offense, has a nice sense of where his receivers are on the field and is a presence behind center. Sees the field, finds the open wide out and quickly releases the ball. Uses all his targets. Patient, buys time for receivers and makes good decisions.
Neg::
Takes most of his snaps from the shotgun and benefits from a three-receiver system. Tends to direct his throws. Stares down the primary target.
