Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Eagles ink Curtis to 6 year deal

source: NFL.com
Update [2007-3-15 17:16:19 by BleedGreen]: Greenheart found some contract details on NFL.com Adam Schefter is reporting that it's a six-year, $32 million deal that includes $9.5 million in guaranteed money. Sources are saying the bulk of the guaranteed money is in the first two years of the deal and only $2 million of it is in a signing bonus. $5 million is a roster bonus for this year and will go only on this year's cap. Very interesting deal with lots of money early and very little long term risk to the team.

These numbers clearly indicate that the Eagles did not want Donte Stallworth back. This contract would have easily beaten the guaranteed money in the Pats' contract. Curtis has played in all but one game the past 3 years.

This comes as a bit of a surprise as most sources said the Eagles were not among the favorites to land Curtis. Heckert and co got it done this time...PFT is saying that it came down to the Eagles and Vikings and that Curtis opted to come here because of Andy Reid and the track record of success here. Curtis is a mormon, just like Andy... was that a factor?

From the official site.

The Eagles and free agent wide receiver Kevin Curtis have agreed to terms on a six-year contract, the team announced Thursday afternoon. More details will follow. The Eagles had Curtis in for a visit last week and worked hard to get the deal done.

At the very least, it appears our WR situation is set. Brown, Curtis, Baskett, & Avant are the foundation. Now onto linebacker!

Also, Tom Heckert revealed in a radio interview that the Eagles will likely sign a free agent to fill the backup RB role and that they've held discussions with multiple teams about a possible trade for a LB.

Nice Sign!
Man, what an incredible relief. Now if they can get Brown (not Dayne) and trade ? for a backer? Does that mean like for a restricted guy ? And, no I don't mean Briggs.

LB
The rumor going around the boards... is that it could possibly be Jonathan Vilma. There's absolutely nothing to back that up... but there's been some rumors that the Jets may be shopping him since they want to switch to a 3-4. That's pure speculation at this point.

Nice.
I saw that there was a new post, and I really was afraid it would Ron Dayne.

Like I said, I was starting to feel better about Brown and Baskett as our top two, but I still think this is a really good signing -- especially since Baskett doesn't have a long-term deal (I wouldn't mind them getting that done in camp).

Vilma would be incredible.  That would take the offseason thus far from "disappointing" to "spectacular".  I've seen the same speculation on the boards that it might take our first round to get him...and maybe that's ok.

Yeah
I don't even want to get into the Vilma thing... I think it's too much of a long shot. I'll just say this, if it happens... I'll probably go crazy and make preemptive plans for a parade...

I also didn't feel about about WR situation without Curtis. Those guys did fine when Stallworth was hurt. That said, the one thing that worried me was all the youth. Other than Reggie, who is heading into his 3rd year, there's so much youth in our WR corps. I really like the like the veteran depth a guy like Curtis brings. He's a pretty solid producer, not a #1 by any means, but a consistent veteran guy. I think that was important to add to such a young corps.

Totally agreed.
I think Curtis will replace the "deep threat" that Stallworth represented.

I just like this move for the same reason I liked the Stallworth pickup last season.  Just like Stallworth protected us from complete failure in case Brown failed to take the projected step forward in his second year, this protects us in case Baskett  doesn't have much further development, and from having to depend much on Avant (who I like, but I still think we don't know what we're going to get from him) at all.

With the Eagles' spotty (but improving) record for developing young receivers, I think this a good move.

Baskett extension
"especially since Baskett doesn't have a long-term deal (I wouldn't mind them getting that done in camp)"

Baskett needs to perform through this November if he's signed during the year, or through the whole year if he's signed next offseason, before he'll get an extension, to show he wasn't a flash in the pan of a couple of games one season.

Baskett
Andrew, I'm sorry. If I'm reading this (BigEd76's contract list from the EMB,which seems to have been very reliable) right, Baskett is a restricted free agent after the 2008 season, so not as much of a short-term worry as I thought.

That referrence isn't ringing any bells
Can you spare a link to the site, or at least spell out what EMB stands for?

Thanks.

Whoops
I meant to post the link.  I'm multi-tasking here (watching NCAA tourney on computer and TV).

9.5/32 million
NFL.com has Curtis getting 9.5 million guaranteed in a 32 million, 6 yr. deal. Obviously, that's all padding on the back end.

Trade What for Whom ?
What would we trade for Vilma or any other linebacker? I did find those posts about Vilma. I would imagine they would want more than the Eagles have to offer, though. They discussed him going to the Skins for Betts, but then the Skins bought Fletcher. I'm really intrigued by Heckert's comment about trading for a linebacker, for some reason. I understood that Porter is on the down side and doesn't fit, and that Fletcher-Baker is too old for them. I don't know what's going on w/ June. I found somewhere that Boss Bailey in Detroit or Dexter Coakley could be traded, but those names can't excite anybody.

Is Don Happy?
I heard his comment about wanting a guy to grow with. It sounded like he was kind of taking a swipe at the organization for letting Stallworth go. They have had a revolving door at wide out, and 5 has never had his own version of Marvin Harrison to throw to year after year.

Good question
I don't totally disagree with him, but McNabb has to realize that Reggie Brown is now headed into his 3rd year, LJ Smith has been for several years now, Westy isn't going anywhere and Curtis is locked up for a while.

Curtis Contract
"six-year, $32 million deal that includes $9.5 million in guaranteed money and a $7 million signing bonus. These numbers clearly indicate that the Eagles did not want Donte Stallworth back."

You can look at that in two ways.

  1. The Eagles gave Curtis more money this year than Stallworth is getting this year.
  2. The Eagles gave Curtis less money overall in the first two years than Donte MIGHT get if the Patriots keep him in 2008.
I said before, based on the recent Brown and Westbrook contracts that the Eagles were not going to give or line up for bonuses of over $10 million to an offensive skill player when they hadn't given over $10 million to Brown and Westbrook.  They didn't.

LJ Smith now needs to think about what he REALLY wants.  $10 million and $25 million for 5 years or $30 million total for 6 years is all he's going to get.

PFT
is reporting that the 7M signing bonus will be paid as a 2M signing bonus with a 5M roster bonus. I'm not sure what year this activates in, or really how "guaranteed" roster bonuses work at all, but I do know that Adam Archuleta had a 5M option bonus count as his guaranteed money because it resulted in at least 5M in guaranteed salary if it weren't excercised. If that's the case, the Eagles could really come out on top as (see below) "guaranteed salary" double counts against overall salary and guaranteed money.

The other 2.5M of the 9M guaranteed money is brilliantly put in guaranteed salary in the first two years of his contract -- but who signs a Free Agent to a six year deal with plans to cut them in the first two years anyways? Essentially it is funny money double-counting that works out in the team's best interests; 2.5M of the 9M bonuses are salary that is more than likely going to get paid in salary whether guaranteed or not. You're essentially sweetening the deal for players with money you have every intention of paying them anyways.

After the Archuleta contract, I tend to approach the word "guaranteed" with a lot more skepticism. It doesn't mean the same thing it did in years past, when guaranteed money was almost always completely accounted for in Signing Bonuses. Agents are going to catch on eventually, though.

Yeah
It seems like a very well done contract. You've done a great job dissecting this kind of stuff and have been way out in front of this type of deal, Will. I've been looking more closely at this stuff ever since I read your article on the Archuleta deal.

BTW, if anyone hasn't read the Hog's Haven "expose" on the reality of the Archuleta deal you should do so now.

and you guys think Curtis is?? now thats funny.

No one said that
In fact we all said the WR corps was fine either way. It's the defense we want fixed. As you Cowboy fans well know, our offense had no trouble putting up 30+ without Stallworth...

WR Corps
Terry, I don't think anyone on this board wanted Stallworth back more than I did. I won't lie about that.  I would have preferred him to Curtis, although the clear advantage of Curtis over Stallworth is that he seems to have better luck staying healthy.

But, look at our receivers going into the 2004 season.  Thrash, Pinkston, and "The Sultan of the Slot" Freddie Mitchel.

The Eagles needed a savior, and they got it in TO.

2005, Pinskton is hurt, Greg Lewis fails to replace his production in a starting role.  TO is suspended.  On the plus side, they add Reggie Brown, who has a very impressive rookie campaign.

They went in the 2006 season with Brown as their best receiver.  We all expected great things from him, but he was still very inexperienced.  Greg Lewis was coming off a disappointing season, and Pinkston couldn't get healthy again.  Although 2006 4th-rounder Jason Avant was highly regarded as an NFL-ready prospect, UDFA Hank Baskett was the sensation of training camp and penciled in as a starter.

With Reggie Brown as our most experienced receiver, I really thought the Eagles needed to add a more proven guy, and they did in Stallworth.

Now, they lose Stallworth.  But, Reggie Brown's proven himself, Baskett showed he can play in this league (ask Pat Watkins about Hank Baskett), and Lewis flourished in a situational role.  Avant struggled, but I think most of us are still optimistic about him.

I think with the emergence of Brown and Baskett, the need to add to "superstar" type WR (and it's arguable whether Donte' falls into that category) wasn't as great as it was going into 2006.  But with Baskett and Avant still so inexperienced, I welcome the addition of an experienced veteran, especially one who is suppossed to fill the void of the "field-stretching speed" we lost with Stallworth, since neither Brown nor Baskett are considered to have speed in that category.

Like I said, I really wanted Stallworth back and I'm very disappointed Joe Banner couldn't (or didn't try to) get a deal done, but I think Curtis is a nice compliment to the receivers left on our roster and makes the Eagles' offense better than it was the day Donte signed with New England.

The Eagles didn't get an answer, but they didn't need one.  Reggie Brown's the answer, but Kevin Curtis is a nice exclamation point.
