Eagles host Giants Gameday Open Thread

New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles
Lincoln Financial Field - Philadelphia, PA
Time: 1:00pm ET
TV: FOX | Radio: 94.1 WYSP, Sirius 127
Uniforms: Green jerseys with White pants

For Giants perspective check out Big Blue View.

For some pre game video goodness, check out NFL Films' Steve Sabol discussing the importance of Brian Westbrook.

Fun fact for you... The Eagles will be honoring Duce Staley at halftime today as he officially retires. He'll be brought out on the field by some former teammates. Last chance for the "DUUUCE" chants!

Prediction: Eagles 17, Giants 16 - In the past two weeks, our backup AJ Feeley has thrown 7 interceptions . In those same two weeks, the Giants' starter Eli Manning has thrown 6 picks. Conventional wisdom would tell you that if McNabb can come in and simply not mistakes then the Eagles should have a decent shot at winning this game. The Giants are also pretty banged up on defense with safety Gibril Wilson out and middle linebacker Antonio Pierce a game time decision. RB Brandon Jacobs also will likely be a gametime decision. The Eagles on the other hand seem to getting healthier. McNabb, Mikell, & Bunkley who were out last week will all be back. More often than not these late season games are decided by who is the most healthy, and this week that favors the Eagles.

The Eagles health going into this game is in stark contrast to the last meeting between these two which the Giants won 16-3. The Eagles were without Lito Sheppard, William Thomas, Brian Dawkins, LJ Smith, and most importantly Brian Westbrook. The Eagles offense mananged just 3 points and the Giants sacked McNabb 12 times including 6 from Osi Umenyoria. Certainly the presence of Westbrook means more than three points and the presence of William Thomas means no more 6 sacks. Umenyoria has 3½ sacks in eight games when lining up against Thomas. If McNabb can move the offense as well as Feeley but avoid the turnovers the Eagles should be in good shape offensively.

On defense, this is an interesting matchup. On one side you have Eli Manning who is leading the NFL in picks(17) and on the other side you have the Eagles defense who is dead last in interceptions(7). Something has to give. Manning is going to make bad decisiona and he's going to make bad throws, that's just obvious. The question is whether the Eagles defense can do anything about it. Last week, Matt Hasselbeck threw two passes between the numbers of Eagles defenders and they weren't able to hang on to either pass. So the key this week will be take what the Giants give us. Minnesota punished the Giants and Manning for their mistakes, Chicago didn't... so it's no surprise that the Vikes blew them out and the Bears lost late. I honestly don't feel all that confident in this Eagles defense to intercept passes, even against Eli Manning. That said, they did intercept him once earlier this year but Manning gives you at least one pick every game automatically. He's thrown an INT in all but 2 games this year and has thrown more than one 5 times.

Westbrook...
He may be the most valuable player to put on your uniform in many years.  I can't remember him ever having a bad game against us.  He doesn't seem to get the kind of national attention LT in San Diego or some of the other big namers do, but I would rather have him on my team than most of the others.  I also apreciate his demeaner.  When he scores a touchdown he acts like he's been in the end zone before.

As for McNabb, he's never really had the receivers to show his true skills and that's a shame.  Too bad for him that TO waited until now to act like a human being.

No, I don't think we will get 12 sacks this week, but with Westbrook healthy I'll be content if we can just get our front seven to prevent Westbrook from beating us and keep some pressure on McNaabb, because our secondary is weak.

As for our famous(in name, anyway) quarterback, who knows how Rex...whoops, Eli will play today?

Honestly, if I were a GM I would stay clear of most gambles on #1 draft pick QB's.  Look at Eli, Rivers, Leinart, and any number of other disappointments.  Quarterback is just a position where the transition to the NFL is truly a crapshoot.  Guys like Romo and Warner prove that.  You've got just as much chance with an unknown guy and if he doesn't work out you can cut your losses quickly and move on.

Sorry for such a long post.  Good luck to the Eagles today, but of course I'm hoping for a Giant victory.

Westbrook has been in the endzone before...
mostly against the giants!

Nice post, man. I think it's probably stating the obvious, but with two inconsistent (this year, anyway) QBs like McNabb and Eli, I think whichever team's QB makes less mistakes will win.

Nice post
What a nice post from a Giants fan to kick off this thread!  That shows some real class.

I will wish the Giants luck too (of our division rivals I do "hate" them the least), but I hope to see McNabb come out playing well and lead the Eagles to victory.

Go Eagles!

Andy Reid...
Wasting timeouts early in the first quarter? Business as usual. I have a feeling that will come back to haunt us.

UNBELIEVEABLE!!!
we end up wasting 2 timeouts for 1 fucking yard. Andy Reid's genious shining through yet again.

Goal line stand
Yep, Dawk saved four points there. That was a bad call on the penalty by Lito. This Birds' offense can't shut down now. It needs to put some more points on the board.

this is looking bad...
They are looking just as inept on both sides of the ball as they did for the first 11 weeks.

just checked...
the eagles are dead last in the NFL in takeaways.

JUST PLAIN BAD...
this team is just simply bad. on both sides of the ball, and its miserable to watch. They are incapable of moving the ball on offense and they lack the ability to make big plays and important stops on defense.

I don't understand...
Does McNabb not have anyone open or is does he really lack confidence in his arm to the point that he has to wait until his receivers have finished their routes to release the ball.

by fuquamanuel on Dec 9, 2007 3:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

FUck this team..
the difference between the Eagles and even a mediocre team like the Giants is that when we get a turnover we can't get it into the endzone. The Giants get a turnover and go right down the field for 7.

McNabb...
I really can't figure it out. Whenever he is in there it seems like there is this enormous hesitation before he decides to release it. There is zero rhythm to the passing game.

And the defense is looking terrible.

ugly..
we have had one productive drive all game and it was the very first drive of the game. I have no reason to believe that they can string together another one the way they have been playing here.

just stop trying to pass...
If you are gonna hold the ball anyway there is absolutely no point in trying to pass. Every single play McNabb has to start scrambling, its unreal. No one is open, and even if they were its not like McNabb would be able to hit them anyways.

by fuquamanuel on Dec 9, 2007 3:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

mcnabb
cant complete a pass on 3rd down... even though feeley throws too many picks he atleast can get in a rythm and score points... everytime 5 drops back you can almost write it off as a minimal gain, sack or throw away.

Well that's it...
I thought that maybe, just maybe if we won this week we'd pull out of the hole and possibly win a shot at going to the playoffs.  But I think we can officially stick a fork in this season.  It was a slim hope that I had, but hope none the less. And then the channel has the audacity to switch over to the cowboy's game where the cowboys at that EXACT moment score a game winning TD with 18 seconds left....what the fuck.  Why does god hate us so much?

So I blamed Reid for not preparing the Eagles at the beginning of the season, then not running the ball enough, then I blamed McNabb, then I blamed Feeley, then I blamed the officiating, now I'm back to the organization as a whole.  How does a team advertising so much promise at the beginning of the season suck so bad?  We couldn't get anything done through this season at all and we always seemed to find a way to lose every game by a squeaker in most cases.  Disturbing...

Now I know that we have a lot of cap room for next year, and we have some good players to build on...they may be veterans, but some good players.  We have some good draft picks for next year but still, I wanted this year to be a year where we'd get some where.

Nevertheless, I do not blame Westbrook or Akers for this loss.  But Mcnabb, come on.  Is it hard to realize that there is a line between extending the play and taking a sack or running out of bounds for a 5+ yard loss?  Is he gun-shy, or does he just not see people or open?  There are people there but he just doesn't seem to have the vision.  I don't blame his arm or his legs, I just think he can't see the field like he once did.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the long post but I'm just bent out of shape after this loss.  I really thought we'd pull it out.  Go Eagles.

let the debating begin... how should we spend the rest of a lame duck season?

I for one wouldnt mind seeing Kolb even if its just for a half somewhere.

I know there will be a lot of talk about pride... but honestly pride makes you loose draft picks... hmm. catch 22... welcome back Duece.

Maybe....
but to be honest with you, I looked at this game and was wondering whether or not it really was McNabb. I'm not so sure that he had anyone getting open.

by 36west on Dec 9, 2007 9:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Opinions?
On TV, they kept showing shots of WRs after McNabb would get sacked.

Apparently, Moose Johnson used these shots to illustrate that the WRs were NOT opened.

I was listening to Merrill and Mike, it looked whenever they showed these, that the guys had some room.

Is it the WRs or the QB or both -- that's the biggest question for the Eagles this offseason.

It is funny though that this late in the season, 6-7 COULD have been enough to get us into the second wildcard slot.  Mediocrity at its finest.

Run on 3rd and 5?
What the hell was that call on the last series?  Was I the only one who thought the Eagles coaches had a brain seizure and forgot the down and distance when making the call?

Why the hell would you run off left tackle on 3rd and 5 after you just got shut down on 2nd and 5 running off left tackle?

Sam Madison and Antonio Pierece
These two win the Midgets A-holes of the game award.

On the 4th and 1 sneak, after the play is over and McNabb is down, Madison comes in and whacks McNabb from the back AND rips his helmet off AND pokes him in the eyes while doing so.

Then when Herremanns jumps in to push Madison off McNabb, Antonio Pierece has the chutzpah to act as though this is some huge affront to sportsmanship and comes in and attack Herremanns.

WTF is wrong with the Midgets?  Are they unable to play clean football?  And then they have to pick fights when people try to straighten them out.

And where in the world were the Refs not throwing a couple of flags on that play for unnecessary roughness and a personal foul 15 yard facemask on Madison?  The Refs took a f*cking nap on the whole game but they really just sh*t the pot here.

Huh
I have been a long time fan of the team. I hope we can win this week, then we have the chance to the playoffs. And I have collected some DVDs about Eagles. Among these DVDs, I like"The Complete History" best. It reminds us the entire reign of the club from their beginnings in 1933 to the demolition of Veterans Stadium. In it , I have seen so many great players. Here is it: http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=72478 , I hope the team would have a lot of wins like this one.
