Eagles lose 38-17
Well, that was pretty much awful. Another prime time game, another division loss. I would imagine that even those optimists that didn't give up on the season after the loss to Chicago probably will after tonight.
Let's get to the headlines...
Mistakes, I've made a few...
Well that certainly was the story tonight wasn't it? Two awful McNabb turnovers led to 14 points and then an almost comical blown coverage gave TO the easiest TD catch he ever made. Of course, late in the 3rd quarter LaJauan Ramsey put a ridiculous and dangerous late hit on the Dallas RB that led to a 15 yard penalty putting the Cowboys in position to score yet another TD. When you spot a team 28 points with that kind of nonsense you can't win games. Can I also mention the two silly penalties that gave Dallas 2 different first and goals on the same drive early in the fourth quarter? It really goes back to what I said after the Chicago game. Bad teams find ways to lose.
I won't go as far as to say "they beat themselves" because for one that always annoys me, but also because clearly Dallas played really well and did a great job capitalizing on every opportunity the Eagles gave them. They certainly deserve credit for a good win on the road in the NFC East.
In the NFL, you don't have to count Mississippi before blitzing
I worry that maybe the Eagles defense didn't realize this fact, because they put absolutely no pressure on the QB whatsoever. Trent Cole didn't do a great job, but he got doubled a lot more than Madden seemed to notice... and no one stepped up to create pressure with that extra room. Kearse was invisible(how quickly will he be gone when this season is over?), there was no push up the middle from the tackles and Juqua Thomas wasn't able to get pressure either.
Can you say, zero sacks. Zero.
McNabb, I... Ummm... yeah
He was awful. In every sense of the word. There was the first fumble that was a just terrible play that a veteran QB doesn't make. He knew the blitz was there, he felt the pressure, he tried to evade it, and he didn't protect the ball. Inexcusable. On the INT, he looked the ball in the entire way. The DB only had to watch McNabb and step right up to make the pick. It was the kind of telegraphed throw that rookies make. Again, inexcusable. There were multiple times when he took stupid sacks rather than throw the ball away. There were multiple examples of this... Let's not forget also the throw near the end zone late in the 4th that should have been picked. McNabb again looked at the WR the whole way and threw it directly to the DB. The only reason it wasn't taken for 6 the other way is because the Cowboy DB was thinking about his return before he caught the ball. Terrible decision, terrible throw. The final pick of the game was just a pass too low and off target. Basically par for the course for the night.
Plus, and I think this is maybe the most worrisome is that he played with absolutely no fire. A few of you guys pointed this out in the open thread. He just didn't look inspired out there. I saw sagging shoulders, he was quiet, and there seemed to be a resigned look on his face. I didn't see a guy ready to win.
Can we praise Westbrook enough?
Even late when the blowout was on he was still fighting for every single yard. He's one of what seems to be the few guys on this team that combines a superior talent with a warrior's mentality. On a night with very few bright spots, his final line of 154 total yards on 16 carries & a career high 14 catches plus a TD was one. He never stopped fighting.
Let's hear your thoughts/rants on this one in the comments. We'll commiserate together...

Agree with everything...
The Eagles have played two good offenses (Detroit and Dallas) and been smoked by both. The Patriots game is going to be scary.
And this team would be the Raiders without Westbrook.
If Reid keeps his job, there should be major assistant coaching changes.
At 3-5, I'd rather see them go 4-12 and get a top 5 pick then 7-9 or 8-8.

How does 4-12 help

Totally uninspired play
It was also very difficult to understand what the defense was attempting to do in the game. There didn't seem to be any effort to disguise what was being attempted. Compare the defensive alignments the Eagles showed to what the Bills did three weeks ago against the Cowboys. The Eagles were just bland vanilla the whole way. Lots of "fundementally sound" playing and tackling, but no big plays.
On yet another day where it seemed like there were half a dozen kick-off return TD's, has our kick-off return unit ever looked so mediocre? WTF is wrong with this unit?
Last thought, its impossible to throw to Reggie Brown if McNabb never even looks his way. He seemed to spend most of the night looking to check down to Curtis and Westbrook on the offensive left as soon as he got the ball. If that is all he is going to do, its time to give him the hook.
This game reminded me of that 33-10 stinker in Dallas in 2005, except that I thought we actually had a chance in that game were it not for some blown calls.

Like our glorious blogger said...
In other words, we need some goddamn playmakers, and that means keeping first round picks and finding guys who can help us control games, because right now, it seems totally out of our hands.

I guess the real question is
Even if our record ends up terrible (I'm guessing a 5-11 season) I'm for giving him another chance. Hopefully his sons will quiet down at this point and he can concentrate a little better. I just hope at some point he realizes the old way of doing things is not working, and he needs to change pronto.

Players, not coach
Look at the roster, and think hard about where guys should go.
D-Line
Keep - Cole, Bunkley, Patterson, Thomas, Abiamiri
Go - Kearse, Howard, Ramsey
Never seen - von Oelhoeffen, Reagor
Linebackers
Keep - Gaither
??? - Gocong (move to D-End?), Spikes (he's not playing at a $5M/year level)
Never seen - Jordan, Bradley, Togafau
D-Backs
Keep - Sheppard, Brown, Mikell
???? - Considine, Hanson, Dawkins
Go - James
Never seen - Graham, Reed
O-Line
Keep - Andrews, Jackson, Herremanns (move to Tackle?)
??? - Justice, Runyan, Thomas
Never Seen - Cole, Young, Jean-Gilles
QB
Trade - McNabb
Keep - Kolb, Feeley
RB
Keep - Westbrook, Buckhalter
Never Seen - Hunt
??? - Tapeh
TE
Keep - Smith, Celek
??? - Schobel
WR
Keep - Curtis, Brown, Baskett
??? - Avant, Lewis
I think most of the offensive problems revolve around McNabb. Some marginal players could be upgraded, but the primary upgrade would be a QB who gets rid of the ball quicker. The only other major question is the long term viability of Runyan and Thomas at tackle.
On defense, the weakness is up the left side (offensive right). Also, I am not convinced that the Eagles really have accomplished something by trading Darwin Walker away for Spikes. Walker provided a pass rush up the middle (27 sacks in 5 years IIRC - top 5 D-Tackle production in the NFL for the period), which we currently don't have, and which was key to both Dallas games last year. It would have been nice to have him still for passing downs. Spikes is fundementally sound, but is not making any big plays that would justify his huge salary (no sacks, tackles for a loss, interceptions, forced fumbles or fumble recoveries). Plus he benefits from playing between Trent Cole and Sheldon Brown on the offensive left. The other weakness on defense is not having Rod Hood anymore. Letting him go was a mistake, because Will James is a downgrade on his playing ability.
If the season sinks much further, I'd like to see Howard cut and Murrell signed, and let Gocong, Abiamiri and Murrell all get a chance to play left D-end, while giving Bradley and Spikes a chance to play SAM linebacker and Jordan a chance to play Will. The Eagles need to figure out where these guys fit in, or if they can make plays, because otherwise, its back to the draft, trades, and free agency for D-end and linebacker.

Thanks...
The story, by the way, from my viewpoint wasn't Philly mistakes, but the Dallas line play.
It's been a constant theme this year that the O-Line is the best part of the team, and I don't think the Eagles will argue after tonight. Who knew Leonard Davis could be this good? Andre Gurode has been absolutely incredible this year, consistent, smart, and powerful.
On defense, we've pretty much been getting 3 sacks every game, which we got again tonight. The Cowboys have also gotten significant other QB pressures and stopped the run consistently.
It doesn't really matter how good the rest of the team is, if you're getting beat on both the offensive and defensive lines, you're probably not going to win the football game.
Though Westbrook's good enough he might be able to do it. He's an incredible player. And I don't know how he does against any other team, but damn, Lito Shepard is a god against the Cowboys.
Again, I enjoyed the fanhood discussion. I'll be seeing you all again in a six weeks.

I was there.
In my heart, I guess I thought they would lose, but I thought they lose a close, heartbreaking game, rather than something that felt like it ended on the first play.
I've been very critical of Andy Reid lately, but I do think over the course of his tenure I've been a strong Reid supporter. No more.
I wish Andy Reid the person the best in his career and his struggles with his children, but Andy Reid the coach is dead to me. If your team comes out with a flat, emotionless performance against a diversion rival in prime time, you've lost your ability to motivate them. I don't think he's a bad coach, I think he just got stale. And don't ask me who'd do a better job -- I think Rich Kotite could have coached a better game tonight.
I don't know what to do with McNabb. He's truly my favorite Eagle ever to wear the uniform. I think he's a good person, and when healthy, a top 5 QB. But I'm tired of the inconsistency. One step forward, two steps back. Repeat. And it's not just this season, it's every season since the Superbowl. I'm not sure the problem's in his knee or his sports hernia anymore. You can't say any offensive personnel other than Westy stepped up tonight, but McNabb was just awful. The OL didn't play great, but there were I thought Donovan just held the ball too long. Let your WRs make a play, or throw it away, Donovan. On the first play where he fumbled, I thought he had decent protection.
To torture myself on my 3-hour drive home, I listened to postgame. Tra Thomas said he felt like the team came out in a haze. Inexcusable.
I feel like this is the end of an era. If the Andy Reid era really began with the Pickle Juice game; it ended tonight. The consistency problem I mentioned w/McNabb, I think it applies to the whole team as well. Since 2005, you just never know what you're going to get from this team week-to-week, and I think that falls on the head coach.
It's harder for me to analyze the defense w/o the benefit of commentary, other than the awful tackling. It just didn't seem like JJ tried any creative blitzes or anything else to mix it up while the score was still within reach.
I still don't think Dallas has beaten anyone good.

The Eagles need a shakeup...
There was no such event this year to unify the team and start a rally. Nothing happened to snap the players back into reality. They're just been consistently bad, and absolutely no changes have been made to correct their losing ways. Andy Reid's much publicized off-field family issues certainly haven't helped, either.
Everyone who posted here is right -- there's no fire, no intensity, and certainly no confidence in themselves as a team.
The Eagles were simply outclassed last night by a more talented team that was also way, way, WAY better prepared to play the game. It's clear that the Eagles' run of success is officially over. Time to rebuild and rethink the coaching/roster strategy for the next several years.

Light My Fire
I, along with others, am sick and tired with the lack of fire. Still too much smiling from McNabb after a stalled drive or INT. Andy "Stone Face" Reid strolling the sidelines. I know the college coaches need to go ballistic sometimes to fire up their teams. Maybe the Eagles need this as well. Andy, show some emotion, pull a Lou Pinella, and get upset for once.
Your team is playing pathetic, and your coaching staff is not prepared. Was Brad Childress really that special? Is Jim Johnson losing his luster? Can we get any worse on kick and punt returns? And still you torture us watching at home by sucking so much they need to show images of a smirking Tony "Homo" Romo, Terrell "J.O." Owens, and Wade "Bob's Big Boy" Phillips. Ugh.

Why was Westbrook in there
I was at the game, until the end, and I can honestly say I have never seen the Linc so empty. The only way this things changes is if people stop buying tickets. They kind of have the season ticket holders by the balls, but everyone else needs to stay home.
Yeah Jeffrey, I got your gold standard right here.

Line Play
The o-line is possibly worse. The run blocking has been good, but both tackles look overmatched. The guards are good, but guard play only takes you so far. Jackson has not looked particularly good, blitzers consistently get through the A gaps, and last night the boys blew up a screen where Jackson forgot to block his man.

A question of judgment
"I think we are [better than 3-5]," Reid said. "I know we are. When we get the thing changed around and get a little momentum going, we'll be fine. We've got to back-to-back some games here and get some momentum going here."
You know he is beyond the bend, has no idea, is part of the problem.
He has been overestimating the talent on this team since before they spent their first pick in the draft on a guy they knew wouldn't play for a couple of years (although, the way Donovan has been playing, maybe much sooner). It is staggering that against all evidence he continues to do so. (Just to give one painfully obvious example: the idea that Sean Considine can be a cover safety in the National Football League.)
If he thinks with the current players and the schedule they have ahead they are going to be anything better than 7-9 this year (and I think that is optimstic right now), he is truly in deep, deep denial.
