The Linc - Rex Grossman Says Redskins Were A "Pretty Damn Good 5-11"

Rex Grossman kicked off the 2011 Redskins season with what many thought was an overly optimistic interview about an NFC East title, so it’s only fitting for him to close the 2011 Redskins season with another tremendous interview, filled with sunshine and puppies.

LB Audie Cole would be interesting. He’s 6’4, 248. I think we’d have to put him at MLB. He’s effective at jamming receivers on underneath routes and hugging up against them, but he’s not a guy you necessarily want in space vs a RB. Cole is a good pass rusher. He has some pop when he hits. Might be the kind of guy who would fit nicely in the Wide-9 because of his size and toughness. Eagles might think he’s not athletic enough to play for us. Mid-round type of guy.

Kyle Shanahan On Juan Castillo "F**K Him"

Redskins nepotism case offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had some choice words for Eagles defensive coordinator as he tried to pump his team before today's game against the Eagles. CSN Washington has the video, but PFT did a transcript.

"Hey, about an hour ago, all right, their [defensive] coordinator [Juan Castillo] told us, told [offensive line coach Chris] Foerster, that [if] the Giants would have lost last week, they were in the playoffs," Kyle Shanahan said. "He didn’t mention that they had to beat us today. F–k him, f–k these guys. In 2012 the Redskins are gonna be the NFC East champions, and that starts right f–king today."

Apparently, the road to being 2012 NFC East Champions starts with a 34-10 blowout loss. Great job Kyle!

It's a good thing he's the coaches' son, because after a second consecutive season where his unit was among the bottom 10 in the NFL, most coaches wouldn't be worrying about next year... They'd be worrying about "black Monday."

Video after the jump.

Two Redskins Suspended For Violation Of Substance Abuse Policy, According To Report

The Associated Press is reporting that Redskins TE Fred Davis and LT Trent Williams will both be suspended for the rest of the season after violating the league's substance abuse policy "more than once." That would mean both players would miss the season finale against the Eagles on New Years Day. That game, and the three leading up to it for the Skins, will most likely be about draft pick positioning more than anything... So losing their starting LT and leading receiver might not be the worst possible thing as far as Redskins fans are concerned. If anything, being without those two makes it more likely that they'll be in contention for one of the top QBs.

However, it isn't completely meaningless. Davis leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and TDs this year. He'll be a free agent after the season, but was certainly being seen as one of the bright spots on the Skins going forward. Trent Williams is supposed to be their franchise LT. Having both suspended for the remainder of the year raises serious concerns about their character and has to have Skins fans (and Mike Shanahan) wondering whether two positions he thought were covered, could now be seen as potential holes.

Glazer: Redskins Trade Donovan McNabb To Vikings For A 6th Round Pick

I just have to break out the #lolskins tag. We knew this was going to be an ugly transaction for the Redskins and here it is. One year (well not one calender year) after trading a second and a fourth round pick to the Eagles for Donovan McNabb, Jay Glazer is reporting that the Redskins have agreed to send McNabb to the Vikings for a sixth round pick in 2012 and possibly another 6th in 2013 depending on performance.

If that's not bad enough, the whole deal is contingent on McNabb agreeing to a big pay cut. There's been no indication yet as to whether McNabb would be open to that and he could nix the deal. I suppose you could make the argument that it's not a terrible deal for the Redskins considering that the alternative is that he'd be cut for nothing... but there's no denying that this is just an awful return on their investment in McNabb.

And further, what a fall for Donovan McNabb. At this point his value is a 6th round pick, only if he agrees to play on the cheap. I know McNabb was somewhat controversial here, but did anyone predict that things would get this low for him when he left Philly?

Chris Cooley Does A 180 On Donovan McNabb Trade

They were young, innocent and had their whole future ahead of them. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

I'm sure many of you remember Chris Cooley's infamous quote when the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins last year. If you read the site with any regularity, you probably do considering how often Jimmy or I have reminded everyone about it...

"This is one of the top 10 biggest bonehead trades in the history of the NFL."

That wasn't all he said by the way. He also raved about quickly McNabb acclimated and how well he was fitting in.

"It’s been great from the minute he got there. It’s been fantastic. You wouldn’t know he hasn’t been our teammate for the last 10 years. He’s stepped right in as a leader, as a friend ... "

In reality, McNabb never acclimated to the system, didn't seem to have any authority on the team and things were decidedly not fantastic. Assuming he meant the trade was "boneheaded" from an Eagles perspective, it goes without saying that Cooley was pretty much 100% wrong. He finally admitted it on the Rich Eisen podcast this week.

"It's hard because you have to be honest and say 'this didn't work'. You're not lying when you say this didn't work for us and it's probably not going to continue in the future. So you're on a fine line because you're saying 'this guy's my friend' and in no way shape or form don't want to say he's not a good football player."

Sorry to pile on Skins fans, but Cooley's initial statement was just so arrogant, so grandiose and so epically wrong that we deserve to revel in the schadenfreude of his recent comments. I can only hope that one day someone directly asks him about his original reaction one day.

Actually, I probably could have done it, because he was sitting maybe 7 or 8 seats to my left at the draft... but I kinda felt like it would have been a dick move. And you all know how I like to keep it classy ;)

Redskins Coaches Want You To Know That They Stand With The Owners

Earlier this week we noted that the NFL coaches association filed a brief with the 8th circuit court in support of the players' effort to end the NFL's lockout. It seemed like a nice little show of solidarity between the coaches and players. However, the Washington Redskins coaches would like to make it very clear that they had nothing to do with it... In fact, the entire Redskins coaching staff hand signed a statement disavowing the brief filed by the coaches association and letting us all know that they stand with their awesome ownership.

"The Washington Redskins' coaching staff has not given its backing to the brief filed with the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the National Football League Coaches Association. Our former representative, Kirk Olivadotti, is no longer with the organization and no member of our coaching staff was consulted prior to this action being taken.

"We stand united with our ownership and the brief does not reflect our thoughts on the matter. We, like everyone else, are hopeful that we can return to playing football. We look forward to a new CBA and welcoming back our players as soon as possible."

Anyone to care to bet that Dan Snyder forced them to sign this statement? He seems like the type of guy that might do that...
