The Second String
So, Jason's going on vacation - to freaking Mexico. Apparently somebody is needed to water the plants and feed the cat while he's gone.
Some of you folks suggested that I take on the mantle and I must say - thanks. I've always had something of a love hate relationship with writing and must admit that it means something that my drivel is appreciated around here.
Who is this cavortingEagle dude anyway? Well, I'm an Eagles fan who grew up in Glen Riddle, PA, Califon, NJ, and graduated HS in Vermont. When in PA, between the ages of 7 and 10, I became an Eagles fan thanks to a running back named Montgomery, a QB nicknamed Jaws, a 6'7" wideout and a coach named Vermiel. At 7, my dad actually worked at Weidner College and I could watch the training camp practices from a hill next to the practice fields. Then when I was 10, there was this big game against the Raiders which the Birds lost, that Superbowl was not easy to take - I've been a fan since. Nothing would make me happier than to see the Raiders in the Superbowl again - but this time we beat them!
Anyway, for whatever it's worth, I'll be changing the gato's litterbox and fertilizing the plantas while Jason's away. Keep bringing it in the Fanposts and we'll keep the site fresh!

2008 NFL Draft day 2 open thread
The story of day one for the Eagles was movement. We saw three trade yesterday and Andy Reid hinted in his post draft press conference that he may be looking to move around some more. The Eagles have 9 picks remaining.
With only 2 rounds in the books there's still some real quality left. The biggest remaining needs left are on the offensive line and at safety. The good news is that there happens to be some good players left at safety. I'd love to see the Eagles get Dajuan Morgan from NC State or Reggie Smith from Oklahoma.
Finally, the Lito Sheppard situation is still hanging out there. Unless a deal gets done for players or future picks, it's hard to see what value a team might have to offer for Lito.
I'll be here all day with updates and commentary, So let's hang out and have some fun on what should be an interesting day two of the NFL Draft.

2008 NFL Draft Open Thread
And so it begins, the biggest day of the NFL offseason the 2008 NFL Draft. I'm at the Eagles draft party at the Linc where I'll be taking lots of pictures and video that I will be sharing when I get back.
Until then, use this as your open thread to discuss all picks/trades/anything. Later on I'll have full scouting reports and analysis on whoever the Eagles bring in.

Two first round picks not enough for Chad Johnson

Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first round draft picks, team and league sources said.
The Redskins offered this year's first round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.
The Bengals have not only rejected the Redskins, but two other NFC East suitors -- the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles -- have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.

Two first round picks not enough for Chad Johnson
Cincy seem to have really dug their heels in on this Chad Johnson situation. It seems that he either plays for them or no one. ESPN is reporting that both the Cowboys and Eagles were told he will not be traded, but eye opener is the reported offer the Redskins made.

I am me
I've decided to start posting under my actual name rather than the moniker "Bleed Green" anymore. My name is Jason which is something anyone that listens to the BGN Live podcast already knows... I never made any secret of my actual name and just figured it was time to go as myself rather just the anonymous fan who bleeds green...

Eagles sign Trent Cole to 5 year deal
He finished 2nd in our poll as the most likely Eagle to get the next contract extension, but he won a big 5 year extension from the Eagles.
With Tuesday's deadline for signing players and using their signing bonuses in this year's cap looming Trent Cole became the 6th Eagle in the past 5 months to cash in on an extension.
Cole, who leads the team with 6 1/2 quarterback sacks, was a fifth-round draft pick last year.
"I can get all the money in the world, but I'm still going to play hard and I'm going to be the same person," Cole said. "I'm happy right now. I love to play this game."
Cole, a product of the University of Cincinnati, has an incredible motor, is very strong off the edge and is a relentless pass rusher. He has made his mark as one of the game's best young defensive ends, and the Eagles have inked him to a long-term deal.
Cole's dedication to the game has paid off thanks to an offseason during which he worked on fundamentals and added some weight without sacrificing speed.
"I think I'm a more sound player. I use my hands a lot more. I use a lot more moves and I use my moves better when I attack my opponent," Cole said. "Coming in as a rookie, I used to come off real fast and wild.
"I think I've been more successful being more sound."
One of the league's top, young pass rushing defensive ends, Cole has posted 11.5 sacks in his first 23 career games (13 starts), including four multi-sack outings. Since joining the Eagles in 2005, Cole leads the Eagles in sacks (11.5) and is ranked second in quarterback hurries (19) during that time span. He has totaled 99 tackles, including seven stops for a loss.
Cole credits his early success to "heart and determination."
But he's far from satisfied.
"I don't think I'll ever be satisfied," Cole said. "I still want to rise to the top. I still want to be the best. I want to be known as one of the best pass rushers in the NFL."

Eagles/Jaguars Game Preview - The McDougle Bowl!
This year, the Jags have been the tale of two teams. The one who is undefeated at home with a dominating defense which is the only unit in the leauge to pitch 2 shutouts this year. Then there is the other Jaguars... The one who has not won the road and was blown out by the lowly Texans 27-7. In fat they've given up 21, 36, & 27 points on the road repsectively.
A 12-4 playoff team from last year, the Jags have lost 3 of their last 4 coming into this game. Of course as we know the Eagles are coming off 2 losses on FGs with no time left.
As I was looking at some of the things that have happened so far to the Jags... I can't help but be reminded of the 2005 Eagles. Tell me if you don't get dejavue at some point...
Injuries
Injuries will once again play a big part in this game, however for once the Eagles are the team geting healthy. Donte Stallworth has been practicing and is listed as probable for this Sunday's game. Rod Hood, who was upgraded to questionable, has been practicing. The Jags on the other hand, have suffered a rash of injury problems.
First and foremost is QB Byron Leftwich who is questionable with an ankle injury. He did play last week and struggled, which Jags coach Jack Del Rio attributed to his injured ankle. In fact, Del Rio expressed that he regretted playing Leftwich and has split the snaps in practice this week between Leftwich and backup David Garrard. Linebacker Mike Peterson, the teams' leading tackler for the past 3 seasons is out for the year. Defensive end Reggie Hayward, the teams best pass rusher is also out for the year. The teams top run stopper, Marcus Stroud missed last week's game and is doubtful with a painful bone bruise to go along with his sprained right ankle. WR Matt Jones is questionable with a hamstring(alot of those among WRs this year!) and OL Stockar McDougle(brother of Jerome McDougle) is doubtful. RB Greg Jennings "whom Del Rio called the most irreplaceable player on the team" is out for the year.
It's kind of dissapointing that McDougle will likely miss this game. It would have been cool to see 2 brothers go head to head in the trenches...
Also out for the Jags is CB Terry Cousin. That means more playing time for a guy the Eagles should be excited to see... Ahmad Carrol! Carrol was cut hours after his awful performance against the Eagles as a member of the Green Bay Packers on monday night football. The Jags picked him up a week later.
Off the field stuff
MSNBC talked about the Jags off the field issues this year.
Running back Fred Taylor ripped the franchise two days before the game, criticizing his incentive-based contract and his rotation with rookie Maurice Drew, then had a crucial fumble that essentially sealed the 27-7 loss.
Safety Deon Grant, one of the most respected players in the locker room, gave a motivational speech at halftime in hopes of providing a spark, then got benched for it. Coach Jack Del Rio wouldn't confirm that, but Grant said so after the game and cornerback Rashean Mathis did so the next day.
Following the plane ride back, defensive end Bobby McCray got into his car and sped home - with blue and white lights flashing, two Vicodin in his pocket and no prescription. McCray was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled painkiller, speeding, reckless driving and prohibited use of certain lights.
The Jaguars believe the drug charge will be dropped because team doctors prescribed the pills. But the police report also said McCray nearly wrecked while racing two teammates.
It was the team's second arrest in a little more than a month.
Cornerback Brian Williams was arrested on drunken-driving charges just days before the opener. He pleaded no contest, received six months probation and was ordered to perform 50 hours of community service. He apologized - like everyone does after consulting with their agent, attorney, publicist and coaches - and was in the starting lineup a few days later.
Interesting stats
- McNabb has won 9 of his past 11 games vs. AFC
- Leftwich has won 5 of his past 7 starts vs. NFC
- Fred Taylor has rushed for 120+ yards in 4 of past 5 vs. NFC on road
- Brian Westbrook is 2nd in NFL with 795 scrimmage yards (462 rush, 333 rec.). Became 1st player since Priest Holmes in 2002 with 100+ rushing (101) & 100+ rec. (113) yards in same game last week vs. TB
- WR Reggie Williams has 3 TDs in past 2 vs. NFC & ties for 5th in NFL with 4 receiving TDs this season.
- WR Reggie Brown has 6 TDs (5 rec., 1 rush) on just 27 touches. Has TD in each of past 3 games (4 TDs).
I'll get into the specific offnse vs defense matchups later today or tommorow.
