Eagles reshuffle LB's again going into the Bears game

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—For the second consecutive week, the Eagles will go with a different look at linebacker because of a knee injury to weakside starter Akeem Jordan(notes).

Coach Andy Reid ruled out Jordan for Sunday night’s game at Chicago.

Will Witherspoon(notes) will again start at weakside LB, and second-year man Joe Mays(notes) will start in the middle. Chris Gocong(notes), who started in the middle in last week’s loss to San Diego, will move back to his customary spot on the strong side. Rookie Moise Fokou(notes), who started the past two games on the strong side, appears to be the odd man out.

It’s the sixth different set of linebackers the Eagles will start in their 10th game of the season.

So it looks like Joe Mays will get the nod, and Fokou will not be starting. I'm still scared about this unit because no matter which way you turn a shitty pie, its still a shitty pie.

Mcnabb and Reid hold a closed door meeting.

TRANSCRIPT FROM THE MEETING...

Reid: Great job on Sunday, 5. Those late touchdowns gave the impression we wanted to win. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

McNabb: Yeah, those 450 yards were pretty sweet! Glad I started me on my fantasy team. I’m 8-2 and heading for the playoffs.

Reid: Hah, me too, thanks to Akers.

McNabb: You crafty bastard, that’s why we kept kicking field goals. It all makes sense now.

Reid: Hey, I needed the points.

McNabb: You could have told me, I would’ve thrown a couple in the dirt to help you out.

Reid: Did I really need to let you in on it? We never score touchdowns in the red zone.

The two share a big laugh.

McNabb: That’s so true.

Reid: Alright, let’s get serious.

McNabb: I’m with ya, Big Red.

Reid: We have engineered another successful midseason swoon. The media is writing us off. Fans have given up. It’s a beautiful disaster.

McNabb: I trolled some message boards last night. They want Kolb.

Reid: Perfect! Now is the time when we win three straight. First up, da Bears. Should be easy.

McNabb: But not too easy, right?

Reid: Exactly. Last thing we need is those asshats at ESPN jumping back on our bandwagon. We’ll still commit stupid penalties and stall in the red zone, but a couple bombs to DeSean should be enough to notch a W.

McNabb: Then there’s the Cutler factor.

Reid: Yeah, he sucks big time. Problem is, I’m running low on cornerbacks.

McNabb: Why not have Vick play corner?

Reid: Nah, I’m saving him for the Falcons game.

McNabb: That will be crazy.

Reid: No doubt. When Mikey scores his first touchdown in the ATL, we’ll be the talk of the league.

McNabb: Just in time to flop against the Giants.

Reid: Of course. That goes without saying.

McNabb: So, are we looking at winning the division, or wild card again?

Reid: Hmm… I haven’t decided yet. Injuries are buzzkilling my ability to manipulate the season. May have to call in a couple favors.

McNabb: Michael Lewis told me Singletary loves the cheesesteaks.

Reid: Is that right? Well, a couple boxes from Pat’s should do the trick.

McNabb: This has been fun, but I gotta go polish the “must-win game” speech for my presser.

Reid: You and the media. Just tell ‘em you need to do a better job and be done with it.

McNabb: Hey, you can coach until you’re sixty. I have a second career to think about.

Reid: Whatever!

Phone rings. Reid picks it up.

Reid: Yello, uh huh… you wanna do what? Um, yeah… sounds… interesting. I’ll be right over… okay… see ya then.

Reid slams the phone down.

McNabb: What now?

Reid: McDermott wants to start Trent at middle linebacker.

McNabb: Oooh, good luck with that.

Reid: Yeah, thanks.

McNabb: Later, Big Red.

Reid buries his face in his hands and sighs.

Insidetheiggles.com

I thought that was pretty funny so thought of posting it here. Now off to some serious talk.

I truly believe this upcoming game is a "must win" for the Eagles. Currently they are in a four way tie for two wild card spots. If they lose on Sunday, they will be at a sub par 5-5 record and could have a tough time making the playoffs. If the Bears win, they are back on the race as well. It would become a 5 team race for 2 wild card spots. As for the division, if the Eagles are 5-5, I think the Giants and Cowboys will capitalize on our struggles. It would give them the push they might have needed to play better. We don't need to help them out. 3 teams for the division and 5 teams for the 2 wild card spots. That's going to be really tough especially with the toughest part of our schedule up. Any of those 4 other teams could get hot at any time, they are all good teams.Three straight losses will pretty much kill this team and possibly the season. I feel it will destroy their confidence and frustrations will start to boil over.

Yes, I know, you ain't out until the math says you are but seriously, they need to show something against the Bears or I'm afraid this team will go nowhere. I want the Eagles to WIN the division not be handed out to them by Dallas and New York screwing up. Last year it took a miracle to make the playoffs, they might not be so lucky this time. They better get their shit together soon because unlike last year, we got two of the top 4 teams in the NFL in the NFC. The playoffs are not going to be a cakewalk. There won't be 10-6 and 9-7 teams waiting in the playoffs like last year. They need to finish the season strong and gain some momentum going into the post season.

In other words, Eagles......DO NOT LOSE THIS GAME!

 	<fieldset class="poll-box">
  <legend>Poll</legend>

Is this Sunday's game a "must win" for the Eagles?

Yes. They need this win to gain momentum and make a run

No. Plenty of games left, not worried about other teams.

I don't know but that "transcript" was pretty funny!

    112 votes | Results

I think Brian should retire.

I really hope he does...

...I do not write this lightly, because Brian Westbrook has long been one of my favorite Eagles. I want Brian to retire. Given the recent concussions controversy in the NFL (most of it being Goodell confused over the idea that repeated head trauma could lead to later cognitive impairment--link provided below) and the NFL's recent hearings on the subject, I see that the league is finally waking up to what the NFLPA and neurosurgeons across the country have been saying for years. Ultimately it will be Brian's decision, but as Eagles fans, we need only to look at the sad story of Andre Waters (one of my all time favorite Eagles) to see what can happen from the lack of attention, knowledge and medical care on this most serious of issues. I love football as we all do, but am very concerned about Brian Westbrook's health and life after football, not just what he does (and has done) for us on the field.

Incidentally, the NFL tried to silence and shun the neuropathologist at the University of Pittsburgh whose findings ultimately forced the NFL to change its position on this subject.

Good luck, Brian.

What does it take to win a championship?

I was thinking (probably a bad thing) while working today.. We all want to throw our coaching staff out and start fresh. But really, how many things have to go your way for your team to win a championship?

I noticed a few things:

A) Injuries. The team has to have any depth to cover injuries and if the injury bug gets bad enough at a bad time it can become too much for a team to over come. How many SB teams have we seen come through who got killed with injuries?

B) Schedule -- Almost every SB in recent memory has had soft(ish)/(er) schedule. It makes playing consistent much easier and if you hit a few injury plagued weeks, it eases the blows.

C) Playing hot at the right time. Like the Steelers in 05 and Giants in 07 both of these teams played red hot in the playoffs. You can be 12-4 in regular season and if a team is on fire that 12-4 team can be playing golf in February..Kinda like the Eagles ending the Giants season last year.

D) Mistake free. Remember the 04 patriots? Honestly, from top the bottom they weren't that spectacular talent wise. They always seemed to be in tight games, but GD they won every close game on the schedule (including the SB). Can't play good teams and make mistakes, they'll capitalize sooner or later.

E) A good QB/defense. Arguably the two most important things on the team. Both can make or break a team. To be honest, I thought the Steelers offense last year was mediocre at best. Their line sucked, skill players weren't top of the line but their defense kept them in every game and Ben Roethlisberger is probably the best QB with 2 minutes to go. Almost every SB winner has a good defens and very few have bad quarterbacks.

F) LUCK - Every SB team has the ball bounce their way a couple of times. Whether it be penalties, turnovers or miracle catches (David Tyree anyone?) there is absolutely some luck involved in this highly skilled game.

Couple that with 31 other teams in a parity league, it's not so easy getting a ring. What Reid has done is give us a chance to win it since the year 2000. Is there any other team besides the Colts that can say this? Is there any other team who is as young and talented as our roster? Has Joe Banner not tried to sign our young talent long term and bring in top flight FA every year? It tok Cowher 15 years, it might take Reid less , might take him more. Either way, Banner/Reid '10 (and beyond) baby.

Anything else I left out ????

Westbrook Visits Two Concussion Specialists

Today, the Eagles suggested that starting RB Brian Westbrook seek advice from two separate concussion specialists located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania regarding his second head injury in the last four weeks, and the player thoughtfully did so. The 8th-year veteran has not yet spoken about the amount of pain he is experiencing, nor his concern for the pair of concussions, but when he sustained the first one (back on October 26th vs. the Washington Redskins), Westbrook expressed that he was "scared" about what effects the severe injury would potentially place on his body and future health.

As much as the Eagles would love to have Westbrook (pictured) a part of their offense in the coming games (and/or years), playing an explosive role as he once did, the staff is clear that the status of Brian and the condition he is in will come before decisions about football. This situation is no longer a question of whether the Pro-Bowl Running Back will be able to perform at a high level. It has become so serious that the career of Westbrook is in jeopardy, and the team is doing everything they can to test and examine the runner before they make any mistake in placing him on the field again, something that isn't likely to happen for the remainder of the season.

The Eagles' head athletic trainer, Rick Burkholder, said this earlier in the day regarding Westbrook's visits to the concussion specialists: "Westbrook [will] consult with neuropsychologist Mark R. Lovell, PhD. Following that visit Westbrook and Lovell will consult with neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, MD. Dr. Lovell has been consulting with the Eagles' [other] medical staff on Westbrook's recovery from the first concussion during the past three weeks,".

The results of Westbrook's visits have not been disclosed to the public, and are not likely to be revealed anytime soon, thus all we can do is hope that our franchise leader in many offensive categories is able to make a well recovery, whether that means the 30-year-old will set foot on a football field again or not.

Take a look!

at are up coming games

Why is everyone jumping of this train like its over. Talking about who we should Draft, and the next year moves. JUST STOP and look at out team. We are only 1 game behind Cowgirls, are up coming games dont look as bad as you might think.

Bears-Cutler like to trow the ball across his body and had 17 INTS this year.

Bears D is not the same they are incosistant.

Forte is overrated.

Hester is good but Asante is gonna come up big this game!

Redskins- They still suck, yea they beat Denver so what.

Campbell does not have wepons around him. That we need to worry about.

Portis is prob. done just like Westbrook.

Falcons- Begining of the season they were the team that everyone had in their TOP 5. Now they are not half of the team they were projected to be.

There D is awful so many hole for our team.

Only problem is maybe their run game( Our D has been doing a good enough job)

Giants- What to say they are unpredictable. I do think its gonna be a good game.

Just like all the teams we have to play they as well have problems on their D.

49ers- Nothing to worry about our D will get to Smith.

We just got to stop Davis that it.

Broncos- What team will show up? I think they are good but not good to make the playoffs.

This game is going to be emotional for all of us Dawkins fans.(but we dont need him) Thanks for everyhing Dawk!

COWGIRLS- I dont think this game is gonna have the effect last year did WIN OR GO HOME!

I do believe we will win the Devision before this game.

If you look at the last game we had their number, that 4 and 1 by donovan was good.

So people dont Panic we are just fine. We just need to make few changes and not allwo that big play.

DONT THINK THAT IM SAYING THAT EAGLES ARE PERFECT! WE ARE NOT BUT WE ARE BETTER THEN WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE THINKING THAT WE ARE NOW!!!!

Would everone please relax?

Last year, we tied the bengals, lost to the bears, lost a must win to the skins (lost to them twice actually), and benched mcnabb in a horrendous outing with the Ravens and we wound up being one defensive stop away from the Super Bowl.

Now I understand completely everything that had to fall correctly for the playoffs to be a reality last year, but my point is, you just can't throw the towel in on this team this early in the season. We do this every year... it's like we forget that one, two, three, maybe even four bad games do not ruin a season. We're one game out of first in the East, and we are guaranteed another shot at Dallas in DeKyrptonember (There's a new buzz word for you)

On top of that, two of our losses have been to out of conference opponents.

The Eagles will not only make the playoffs, but will win the division

2010 Draft Candidates

i liked the post DSmith215 put up so I decided to follow up on who the Eagles could draft in 2010 draft even though I know that it is still very early.

First Candidate- Everson Griffen (DE)

This guy is 6-3 and weighs 280 pounds. He is a junior this year, but will be expected to enter next year's draft seeing that the NFL could enable a rookie cap. This guy is BLAZING FAST. His worst 40 time is a 4.76 but his best 40 time is a 4.54! When Trent Cole was in college, he ran a 4.7-4.9 40 time. The Eagles should definitely consider this guy.

Here is a short 10 sec. clip of Everson Griffen getting a Cole-like sack:

Everson Griffen

Second Candidate: Greg Hardy (DE)

Greg could be a reach, but you never know what could happen on draft day. He is a little faster than Everson Griffen with a 40 time of 4.5 and his highest 40 time being 4.72. He is a true DE and is rated by ESPN as the fourth best in his position. Greg will not play the rest of this year because of a left wrist injury he suffered this year. He has great pass-rushing skills, and his very quick. Greg could actually fall down the draft boards because of his injury.

I couldn't find any stats on him on ESPN or any other sites so I couldn't post them up.

Third Candidate: Bryan Bulaga (OT):

I don't know very much about his guy but he is ranked as the 4th best in his position at OT and plays for Iowa He's 6-6 and weighs 311 pounds.

2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Bryan Bulaga, T, Iowa

Bryan Bulaga is the latest in a long line of talented offensive linemen from the University of Iowa. Bulaga began his career at left guard where he started five of the seven games he played in as a freshmen. As a sophomore, he took over at left tackle, starting all 13 of Iowa's games last season. Bulaga has started all five games he's appeared in this season. He missed three games early in the year, but it shouldn't effect his draft status because he was ill, not injured. Bulaga has very quick feet for a big offensive lineman and uses his long arms to ride speed rushers right out of plays. He is not as strong as fellow Big ten linemen Joe Thomas or Jake Long, but he's still very young and has time to develop. Bulaga's run blocking has also improved steadily over the last two seasons. He is no longer satisfied just blocking the man in front of him, he moves on to the next level and tries to get a block on a linebacker as well. The best fit for Bulaga would be on a zone blocking team in the NFL, because of his familiarity with the system. If he has a strong finish to his junior year, he will likely declare for the 2010 draft. If he comes out, he is a lock to go in the first round, and a possible top ten selection.

Fourth Candidate: Patrick Robinson(CB)

Due to the Eagles lack of sudden depth at cornerback, they could take a chance at drafting one this year. Patrick Robinson plays at Florida State, is 5-11 and weighs 192 pounds. His 40 time is 4.4

I couldn't find any decent highlight vids but he kinda looks/plays like Asante in this vid, but probably has better tackling skills than him.

Patrick Robinson

The 2010 Draft

I'm well prepared for the hordes of people telling me that it's too early to think about the draft and that we need to focus on the season. Well, you know what, guys? Thinking about the upcoming draft is fun and almost all of us are doing it anyway.

I'm quite interested in where the Eagles are going to go this year. Lots of the buzz on ESPN, (for whatever amount of consideration we want to give those folks,) seems to indicate that they think Andy will trade out of the 1st round again. In that case, we'll be likely to have a high number of later picks, and I'm interested in seeing what happens.

Another consideration, of course, is whether the Birds will be able to get any picks for Michael Vick if they don't keep him around.

I'm going to discuss some of my thoughts about the draft, and I'm anxious for you all to weigh in with your perspectives, predictions, and comments. Without further ado, here are some things that I think we might see happen this draft, which is supposedly going to be very deep in talent due to the whole CBA situation:

Get Trent an Opposite Number: DE

The most recent DE drafted "high" by the Birds was of course Bryan Smith in 2008's third round; well, we all know how that turned out. Others, recently? Well, there was Andrew Studebaker in 2008's sixth round, (he plays for the Chiefs as a LB now,) Abiamiri in 2007's second round, Trent in the fifth round of 2005, McDougle in the first round of 2003, and Jamaal Green in the fourth round of 2003. As you can tell, we haven't exactly done well.

A lot of people like Jason Babin, some people think Abiamiri can emerge if he can stay healthy, and a lot of people say the Eagles need another playmaking DE to shore up our 4-man pass rush. (Most of the people from this school like to announce that they've been saying this for years now.)

As for me, I don't think Abiamykneeshurt will ever get truly healthy. I like Babin a lot, and think he should get more opportunities over the course of this season. If he turns into a monster, great. But I am of the school of thought that we need someone who can take all those double-teams off of Cole. We're strong with Cole, and Bunk and Patterson are a great tandem. I think that with a real stud opposite Trent we could have a pretty nasty D-Line.

Okay, Enough Already: LB

Let's face it: with all of our injuries and the loss of Big Stew, our LB core is in serious, serious trouble. A lot of folks seem to think that it's a no-brainer that we need to draft a LB high but I think this is a stickier situation than people are realizing.

Almost everything, of course, depends on whether Stew shows up as his old self next season. But, if you listened to Ingram talk about Bradley's rehab on that piece on PE.com, it sounds as though things are going well. (Of course, Ingram wasn't likely to say anything different.) However, Ingram seemed pretty sincere to me.

If Bradley seems good to go, and with the emergence of Akeem Jordan, what we have left is the SAM position, currently filled by the much-maligned Chris Gocong. I'm not a Gocong-hater; I provisionally accept the arguments that in the Eagles' defense, he plays a lot of important roles that are hard to see. Also, the Birds seem really high on Fokou, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix for a long time, assuming he can learn that football has rules, and when you break them blatantly you will get penalties called on you. I personally think that Fokou looks like more of a 4-3 WILL than a 4-3 SAM but I work in Advertising and not in the NFL.

As much as we've loved to whine about the LBs recently, I'd be a little surprised to see Reid go after a 'Backer early, unless he's a lot less satisfied with his LBs than he seems to let on. The other question, of course, is what we're going to do with Will Witherspoon when Bradley comes back...

...And Justice For All: OT

Are you someone who believes that Shawn "Mama I'm a Rock Star" Andrews will be playing for the Birds again next season? I'm not. One of the few good stories from this season has been this one: "Well, it turns out that Winston Justice is a totally competent offensive tackle." People seem to think he's better in pass pro than in the run game, but it's been hard not to see that he's developing. Of course, new CBA or no new CBA, he'll be up for a new contract soon, and God knows what will happen with that.

Are we satisfied with Justice? He's been doing just fine but he doesn't look to me like he's going to the Pro Bowl anytime soon. We also, of course, know that Andy Reid likes stockpiling offensive linemen almost as much as he likes cheeseburgers.

I think OT is a possible pick next year, but probably not until the later rounds. I think, from left to right, that 4/5ths of our O-Line will read Peters-Herremans-Jackson-Andrews for a long time. The question is what we do with Justice and that RT position.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to submit that I want King Dunlap to lose some weight, go play basketball, and never step on an NFL field again. Not even for another team. I really do think he's that bad.

Arghh Blargh Dawkins Blargh: S

Oh boy. Okay. Here we go. I'm writing this to address the camp that likes to make arguments that usually go something like this:

DAWKINS WAS THE ENFORCER WE HAVE NO PLAYMAKERS IN THE SECONDARY WEAPON X WOLVERINE BRING BACK DAWKINS LEADERSHIP LEADERSHIP NOW GET ME MY SIX-PACK OF PBR

In case these gentlemen haven't noticed, the Eagles' coaches really, really like Macho Harris. They'll tell you that he's fast, physical, plays hard, and just needs more time to acclimate to one of the most complex defenses in the NFL. I'll go on the record here: I believe them. I've spent a lot of time watching film of him in games and in the pre-season, and I think that once he gets comfortable, he's going to bring the heat as FS. Basically, anybody that gets an unsolicited and ringing endorsement about toughness and physicality from Sheldon Brown gets credit in my books.

I think Jones is the stopgap until Macho gets his confidence up, and that it will then be Macho and Mikell for some time.

It Might Just Be That Time: RB

I hate saying this but I feel that I have to. Brian Westbrook's career is probably over. He might be the best RB in Eagles history, and he certainly helped redefine the role of the receiving RB in the NFL. But, after all of this stuff with his brain, I don't want to see him injure himself for life trying to play the game of football. I'd bet that BWest goes on IR pretty soon.

I think (Christ, I hope,) that we're going to see more of Eldra Buckley from here on out, and there's still that slightly mysterious pickup of P.J. Hill. If either of those guys turn out to be a legitimate hard-nosed, hard-running RB, maybe the Birds don't draft there this upcoming year. Of course, we'd all like to see Andy establish something resembling a consistent and aggressive between-the-tackles running game, but don't bet the rent on that one.

An exciting RB pick isn't something I'm anticipating from the Birds next year, but it's something to keep an eye on. Let's all start collectively praying that they keep Leonard Weaver around. Seriously.

The State of Our Union:

Talent-wise, I actually think the Birds are pretty well set up. I'm excited to have Ingram and Bradley back next year, I think our first three corners will stay consistent, and Celek, Maclin, and DJax will be locks for a while. I bet Andy lets a lot of picks in 2010 go for more picks later, so the selections we will have will be even more interesting.

All right, ladies and gentlemen, weigh in. Let's do the Birds a favor and figure out their drafting strategy for them.

McCoy ready for the starting job

Lesean McCoy has so far started 3 games in place of Brian Westbrook, who has been injured for the past couple of weeks as the guys already know. Westbrook has had 2 concussions the past 2-3 weeks.

In Lesean's starts for Westbrook, he has had 44 carries for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns. That is about 5 yards per carry, which is pretty good for a rookie. Mccoy has been pretty good, but he will have to do a lot, such as block very well, hit the holes better, and try to do those famous Westbrook screens. Lesean will definitley be able to fill Westbrook's shoes. He will improve over the next games we have, and will show us why the Eagles drafted him in the second round.

Comparison to other rookie running backs drafted this year:

Knowshon Moreno #27 RB(Broncos)-

(The guy we were supposed to draft if the Broncos didn't snag him so high.)

P.S: I found it funny that when i searched Chris Wells the football player didn't come up. Then I thought of his nickname Beanie, and that's what ESPN catoragized his name as. I guess his nickname stuck with him.

Why the Eagles are post season worthy...

This weekend and last weekend was a huge disappointment. The Eagles are in a slump right now, but things will change very soon.

Backups/Players have been emerging to help provide the Eagles with rhythm and some sort of stability

1. WR: Jason Avant

This guy is having a Miles Austin performance, coming out of nowhere and performing. Last week against the Chargers he had a career day w/ 8 grabs for 156 yards. That's averaging 19.5 yards per catch. In the last three games he has averaged 16.0 yards or more per grab. I see more reads to him from now on and surely against Bears weakened LB's and poor DB's.

2. WR: Jeremy Maclin

Very few Eagles fans saw Maclin getting the starting job this early. But with the Kevin Curtis on the sidelines, Maclin has stepped up to be a legitimate number two receiver. Vs Chargers he had 6 grabs for 76 yards and a late TD. With the disappearance of Jackson, the rookie is producing well and should continue to do so against the Bears.

3. S: Sean Jones

During the preseason many thought the talented safety would start at the beginning of the year. This guy was a leader of INT's for the past few years. Now, he is a reliable tackler and I feel comfortable with his coverage skills.

Honorable Mention: Jason Babin

Weapons that need to be utilized

1. RB/FB Leonard Weaver: Even before Westbrook's injury, we needed to share the load with him, he needs to be the 3rd/4th and short. And especially in the redzone. I see him getting at least one TD.

2. RB Eldra Buckley : With Westbrook's uncertainty, he needs to show us why we cut Lorenzo Booker.

Players faltering

1. WR Desean Jackson

I don't know if its double teams or not giving it to him deep or many times, but without Desean producing, it has been tough to constantly move down the field. In three of the four games he has scored a TD we have won. He need to get the deep balls.

2. HB LeSean McCoy/Brian Westbrook

Let me start of withWestbrook. I hope he doesn't retire, but I think with all the wear and tear of these 8 years it sounds like the plausible/smart thing to do. I don't knowmaybe if the concussion doesn't look to serious we could get him back right before the end of the season. The problem is for years and still now with all the new weapons. The Eagles offense is like a puzzle board. There are only two pieces, #5 and #36. Without one piece, it very difficult to win againstgood/great opponents. The key is right now is can LeSean McCoy be the fitting piece. He has been good, but on the ground not that impressive. Sometimes he tries to get 50 yards when the easy 3 is right in front of him, giving us the easy 1st. If he can hit the whole better I think he can be a much better back.

3. G Stacy Andrews

This is the only respectable Andrews left on the team. I still have faith in him, he is a little slow of the ball b/c of his knee. But we need holes for the running game badly.

Reinforcements

Two starters are expected to play against the Bears this weekend. LT Jason Peters and WLB Akeem Jordan. Jason has been huge for us in the passing game, but it also lets starting OL Todd Heremanns to return to LG, where he is needed. It is also reported by philadelphiaeagles.com that starting CB Sheldon Brown is questionable for this weeks game.

Andy Reid

I'll make this very brief. He has been very good for us for the past decade, getting us to the post season quiet often. I think he will stop going for field goals as often. I think he will incorporate more Weaver. I think he stop running in the Chargers game b/c Westbrook went down.

Schedule

I see the rest of the season playing out as so.

Westbrook To See Concussion Specialists

Running back Brian Westbrook will visit two concussion specialists in Pittsburgh on Wednesday to assess if and when he can continue his playing career after sustaining his second concussion of the season Sunday against San Diego.

Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder provided the following info regarding Westbrook's visit to Pittsburgh.

"The Eagles will first have Westbrook consult with neuropsychologist Mark R. Lovell, PhD. Following that visit Westbrook and Lovell will consult with neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, MD. Dr. Lovell has been consulting with the Eagles' medical staff on Westbrook's recovery from the first concussion during the past three weeks," Burkholder said.

Head coach Andy Reid addresses the media on Wednesday, which you can see on Eagles Live! presented by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board at 11 AM.

Westbrook suffered the first concussion of his career on Oct. 26 against the Washington Redskins when he was kneed in the helmet by linebacker London Fletcher and briefly lost consciousness. He was then held out of the Eagles' next two games against the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys.

Last Sunday against the Chargers, Westbrook suffered another concussion after being hit in the helmet by Chargers' safety Eric Weddle.
-- Posted by Bo Wulf, 3:23 p.m., November 16

Best wishes to Westbrook.
Hope he can return, but I would rather him live a happy life than get another 3rd concussion.
10 Simple Steps For Improvement: Some Polite Suggestions From A Timid Observer

Howdy-doo, boys. Been away for a while but I'm back. Let's get right to bidness...after the Dallas and San Diego losses it's natural to start pointing the finger and getting discouraged. But my new Zen approach to the Eagles has me thinking otherwise. There are certainly holes in this team, but there's still time to right the ship. As far as I'm concerned, it's still anyone's division. The Eagles can climb back into this thing, and here's how they can do it:

OFFENSE

1. Focus on the offensive line during practice. Right now, this group should be the first guys on the field and the last guys off. The pass protection has been okay, but the run blocking has been terrible. Attention, Juan Castillo: we don't have big bruisers at RB. We currently have LeSean McCoy, who is Westbrook 2.0, and Eldra Buckley, who will probably be bagging groceries this time next year. They can't muscle their way for first downs like they're Earl Campbell or something. Injuries have been a major issue for this unit, but not so much that they can't improve on opening up holes. Even in a pass-first offense, you need the running game to open up the air game.

2. Use Brent Celek more. He's currently the team's most reliable pass-catcher, in and out of the red zone. Andy and Marty seem too fixated on trying to stretch the field; sure, watching DeSean Jackson get wide open and score a 75-yard TD is fun and good for a score in a pinch, but opposing defensive coordinators have already keyed to him. Sending Celek over the middle more often will draw double-teams and allow the offense to spread the ball to guys like McCoy and Jason Avant. Remember how well throwing the ball to B-West just a few yards upfield used to work? Plus, it'll eat more of the clock. Why try to go for the quick strike and risk coming up short when you can use up time and set up a good balance of the pass and run?

3. Be less conservative. Usually, Andy and Marty strive to be creative in their playcalling, and I think they've gone a little conservative of late because they're realizing that the Wildcat hasn't worked out like they'd hoped. Trading field goals for touchdowns when you're in the middle of a playoff race? That dog just ain't gonna hunt. Using McCoy and Eldra Buckley on the goal line isn't the answer. Leonard Weaver would be better here. Celek at the back of the end zone would be too; fade routes, anyone? And when you're out of the red zone, utilize the screen pass more; no team in the NFL runs it better, and now's a good time for McCoy to pick up where Westbrook left off and learn from the master. And how about letting Michael Vick uncork one once in a while? This is a guy who used to throw 70 yards in the air from a knee, so why not let him throw deep on occasion?

4. More L-Train! Why sign a true fullback if you're not gonna use him enough? LeSean McCoy and Weaver could be an explosive one-two punch in the backfield. I thought he was brought in to help cure our short-yardage woes. For god's sake, he's a fullback who ran away from defenders! That's saying something! Andy and Marty have to put their heads together on this one; he's also a good pass-catcher who can swing out of the backfield on a screen. Having not one but two rushers that can do this? Siiiick.

5. More Jason Avant. He could be a starter somewhere else, and his performance on Sunday proved it. He has the best hands of any receiver on the team, and he's not afraid to get hit. Even though he's not particularly fast, he's good at gaining yards after the catch with his toughness and athleticism. I don't know why we haven't seen him in the slot more often.

DEFENSE

1. LEARN TO TACKLE! This arm-tackling and body-checking garbage is getting us nowhere. Calling Asante Samuel! What happened to wrapping and driving? Sean McDermott has to let his unit know that their fundamentals are going by the wayside, so this should be focused upon in practice.

2. More Jason Babin. The guy has shown he can be a disruptive force off the edge; he has 2.5 sacks in 4 games. I believe he should get a shot at starter over the mediocre Juqua Parker. Other disappointments include Chris Clemons and Victor Abiamiri; they haven't done much of anything. In Abiamiri's case, he can't seem to stay healthy. Having Babin in there from the start might keep the opposing offensive line honest, and he could wind up being an excellent complement to Trent Cole.

3. Blitz 'em early. I think McDermott needs to set a tone by blitzing the bejesus out of the opponent on the first drive. Sure, he's been using the old Jim Johnson blitz packages, but he needs to learn to adapt to the opposing offense when it starts to read blitz. Keep 'em guessing, Sean. You just gotta let your boys know they need more pressure on the QB.

4. Stop giving opposing receivers so much respect. It seems like the secondary has become a liability with its soft-coverage schemes, giving receivers who don't deserve it way too much space. Let them try to deflect more passes on man coverage than try to play catch-up when the completion's already been made. With the talent of Asante and Sheldon, this shouldn't be too tall an order.

5. The linebacker question - huh boy. This is a tough one. It's hard to fix the problems at linebacker when injuries lie at the middle of them. All I can think of is put each LB where they are best suited to play. When he gets healthy again, Akeem Jordan looks like he might become a mainstay. He's a great tackler, and he flies to the point of attack. Gocong and Witherspoon should be ok on the outside...we just can't afford to lose anyone else. So I suppose the thing would be to tell the entire linebacking corps to take it easy and not try to do too much.

At 5-4, we're hardly out of the NFC East race. The entire division has proven that it can beat anyone but also lose to anyone. The way it stands, New Orleans and Minnesota, barring disaster, both look like they're headed to division titles and first-round byes. That leaves us with the Cardinals in the West, the Cowboys and Giants in our own division, and possibly the Falcons. We can beat any one of these teams, but we can't afford to lose more than two or three more games, especially in our own division. We play the Giants at the Meadowlands and the Cowboys in Texas (only steers and queers come from Texas), and we have the Redskins at home. Our remaining schedule is kinda tough, so the team needs to pull it together now. The way I see it, 10-6 should be good enough for a wild-card spot, if not the division title itself. But with the division rivals, Bears, Falcons, 49ers, and Broncos looming on the horizon, we need to play a brand of football that is conducive to moving the chains and retaining possession. As stated before, we have proven we can lose to anyone, but we can also be one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL. A wounded dog may fear you, but the second you turn your back, he's gonna attack.

Reserve CBs Prepared to Step Up in the Absence of Injured Stars

As if the losses of Ellis Hobbs and Joselio Hanson were not enough to diminish the Eagles’ depth at the Cornerback position, the Birds will now possibly need to replace one of the starting roles in the secondary for perhaps a game or so. As explained last week, Hobbs was sent to the Injured Reserve list with a severe neck injury, ending his 2009 season, and Hanson was slapped with an unlikely suspension for abusing the NFL’s substance policy. Left two men down at their typically strong Cornerback spot, the Eagles then signed a pair of young, potential-filled, yet unproven defenders to man temporary roles in the secondary. After this past week’s loss to the Chargers, the Eagles are likely to be without yet another defensive back, as Sheldon Brown left Philly’s Week 10 matchup with a hamstring injury.

Brown’s status for practice this week, as well as Week 11 versus the Chicago Bears, is uncertain, and as of now, it appears as if the league’s former Mr. Irrelevant (a term used for a player that was the final pick in his draft class) will get his first career start with the Birds. That player is Ramzee Robinson (pictured, #28), a once-unknown Detroit Lion and backup performer, who made his Philadelphia debut last week with a pair of solid special teams tackles and several decent coverage attempts as Brown’s injury replacement. Robinson may not excite Eagle fanatics, for he’s simply not a well-known professional, but he is certainly thrilled at the opportunity of starting. The 3rd-year player said this in a recent press announcement:”[It's] a blessing…It’s something I’ve been praying [about] for the past eight weeks, and finally getting that call to have a workout with an organization, and being able to come out and contribute early.” Robinson also spoke regarding the preparation that needs to be executed in order to succeed in the team’s coming games: “It’s definitely not easy. This is not an easy defensive scheme to learn. But, being a professional and understanding my role and the situation that I’m in, I have to try to make the best of it and try to simplify the best way I can and be able to go out on the field and play ball, play fast.” “Starting today, it’s just about preparing for Chicago – and we need a win right now…Everybody has to pick their game up another notch, and we’re just going to continue to do that and let everything play itself out.”

In addition to Robinson’s possible increase in playing time, 2nd-year practice squad promotion Jack Ikegwuonu is also expected to make larger contributions to the defense after sitting out last week’s game because of roster unavailability. It will definitely be interesting to see how these young coverage men take to the potential task of filling a consistent starter’s duties, especially in a game with a lot of importance.

Fantasy Update: Week Eleven

<!--end meta-->

With a handful of injuries striking fantasy starters, as well as a few signings and even a suspension in the NFL, I will break down a list of fantasy news that you should be aware of.

Ronnie Brown’s Status in Jeopardy
The Miami Dolphins have ruled out RB Ronnie Brown for their upcoming Thursday game against the Carolina Panthers. He suffered a foot injury this past weekend, and has been seen hobbling on crutches. The leading rusher for Miami will have to sit on the sidelines, something that he is familiar with after he suffered a season ending ACL tear previously in his career.

Bleed Green’s Consideration at the RB position:
Ladell Betts, Washington Redskins: The Redskins’ typical starter–Clinton Portis–is still recovering from a concussion suffered two weeks ago. Betts got the start this past week against Denver (who has been one of the better defensive squads in the league) and ended up running for 114 yards and a touchdown. Head coach Jim Zorn has announced that if Portis is unable to practice this week, Betts will get the start again this weekend.

Sorry Eagles Fans…Westbrook Has Been Ruled Out
Once again, Brian Westbrook will be held out of the Eagles’ upcoming game due to a concussion. Unfortunately, this could cause Westbrook to miss the rest of the season depending on the outcome of his second concussion in recent weeks. What does this mean for the Eagles? Expect to see a lot more of the rookie LeSean McCoy, as well as more touches for the team’s new Fullback, Leonard Weaver. Westbrook’s absence now jumps McCoy’s fantasy value to a 2nd RB option in many leagues. Owners of McCoy should consider starting him this weekend against the Chicago Bears, who have not been as dominant on defense as they have been in previous years.

Larry Johnson Now Calls Cincinnati Home
After his surprising dismissal from the Kansas City Chiefs, L.J. has found a new home and is now officially a member of the AFC North division leader, the Cincinnati Bengals. Don’t expect him to just step in and get back to his old form of productivity, though. The Bengals have one of the best Running Backs this season in Cedric Benson, but Benson did suffer an injury this past weekend. The injury is not expected to keep him out of the Bengals’ upcoming game, and Johnson may not even suit up. In fantasy terms, Benson’s value is still the same and does not get affected with the arrival of Johnson. Don’t get fooled into signing Johnson off waivers, he may not even step on the field in the next two weeks.

Suspension Alert: Dwayne Bowe to Miss Four Games
Kansas City’s leading receiver has violated the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances, and will now be suspended for the next four games on the Chiefs’ schedule. Bowe will not be eligible to play until Week 15 against Cleveland . Fantasy owners of Bowe shouldn’t cut him immediately because he is still the Chiefs’ clear-cut best player, and he will resume play by the time most fantasy playoffs get underway.

Bleed Green’s Consideration for the WR position:
Robert Meachem, New Orleans Saints: As we already know, Saints’ Quarterback Drew Brees loves to air it out, and loves to spread the wealth around. Meachem is available in most fantasy leagues, even though he has been a great option in recent weeks. This past week, Meachem had just 27 receiving yards, but managed to get 47 yards on the ground , as well as a touchdown. If you are not capable of signing Meachem, here are some other possibilities:

- Jason Avant, Philadelphia Eagles
- Chris Chambers , Kansas City Chiefs
- Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh Steelers

Other Minor Fantasy News

—The Baltimore Ravens have cut starting K Steven Hauschka. He has struggled all season to make field goals, including three missed attempts and a blocked extra point in the last four weeks. The Ravens have not announced who will kick, but young Graham Gano seems the most likely option, after being beat out by Hauschka in training camp. Fantasy owners of Hauschka should have no trouble finding a Kicker in their league’s free agency.

—Bills’ Quarterback Trent Edwards will no longer be the starter in Buffalo . Ryan Fitzpatrick will take over the role, but he has minimal fantasy value. The Bills may look to run the ball more often, giving RBs Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson a boost in their fantasy value.

Great site for OL and DB stats (defensive back, not douche bag)

ProFootballFocus.com

Their overall ranking formula may be somewhat questionable, but there's no doubt that a stat sheet like this is handy to be able to reference in pointless forum debates about cornerbacks. You can also use it in arguments with dumbass Steelers fans that think Roethlisberger is a better QB than Peyton Manning (guy I work with... sigh)

It's completely sortable and it seems to be updated rather quickly. I'm not sure where they get the stats, from, however, since some of the available stats aren't official NFL stats. Anyway, enjoy.

Are the Eagles in the Market for a RB?

With rumors flying that Brian Westbrook–the Eagles’ starting Running Back–is likely to miss the remainder of the season because of a second concussion he suffered on Sunday vs. the Chargers, speculation has begun regarding the possibility that the organization is searching the free agent market in hopes of acquiring a replacement starter at the RB position. Of course, we’ve seen plenty of potential deals and possible signings come into the Philadelphia franchise as rumors and leave as nothing but gossip, such as the team’s reported interest in former Chiefs’ Pro-Bowl runner Larry Johnson. Interestingly enough, Johnson has been mentioned quite frequently around the Eagles as of late, obviously because of Westbrook’s recent injury to what was his already-painful head. Now before you scamper away from this article in fear of another pointless rumor thread, take a gander at why the Eagles will and will not add another RB, and if so, who it might be:

Why the Eagles will sign a Running Back

Westbrook has overcome many injuries during his career, but the 8th-year player has really taken a beating this season, and a majority of signs point to the veteran not being able to play significantly–if at all–for the rest of the year. He has dealt with offseason surgeries, a twisted ankle, a pair of concussions, and overall has been absent from three of the Eagles’ games. It is almost guaranteed he will be sitting out Week 11, and the franchise clearly does not want to risk his health, therefore keeping Westbrook on the sidelines for a good chunk of games (or perhaps the rest of the season, as stated previously).

Although rookie backup LeSean McCoy has shown promise as a starter and has exceptional speed and ability, it might be difficult for a freshman player like McCoy to handle a full-time workload, especially in the way that the Eagles like to utilize their Running Backs (in both the rushing and passing game, and often). It is likely necessary for the young back to have some veteran support and relief from a quality, proven starter.

There are several capable runners on the free agent market, and almost all of them are desperate to play, as they should be. Of course, one could argue that if the free agents available were that great, why wouldn’t they be on a roster right now? That is a viable question, but many of the league’s teams are satisfied with younger, more explosive ball carriers these days. There is undoubtedly a handful of players the Eagles have the ability to sign and place in a contributing role, even this late in the season.

Why the Eagles will not sign a Running Back

Head coach Andy Reid has already hinted that McCoy and versatile FB Leonard Weaver will share the primary workload at the Running Back position while Westbrook is gone. And as we’ve seen before, Weaver can take hand-offs and produce sufficiently for the offense. It doesn’t seem likely the front office will go out and spend money on a new player when they have two capable guys to fill the position with success.

The Eagles’ offensive line may be the bigger question here. Although the absence of Brian Westbrook will not be a good one, it is fair to place some of the failure of the running game on the offensive line’s shoulders. They have not played consistently on running plays all year, and it makes one think…even if the Birds would make a move and bring in a talented free agent, how would the results be any different with an unsteady offensive front, whose responsibility is to open holes and opportunities for the team’s runners.

Potential Candidates Who Might Land in Philadelphia

Larry Johnson: Johnson may not be the most likely suggestion, as he is reportedly close to finalizing a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, but the former Chief and 2-time Pro-Bowler might be one of the top RBs on the list of “potential signings”. The main downside to acquiring a player like the 7th-year veteran is his tendency to provoke controversy within organizations. He was known well for starting arguments and disagreements in Kansas City, but then again, it was Kansas City, a franchise who managed to reach the playoffs once in Johnson’s tenure as a Chief.

Warrick Dunn: This is the second time that Dunn has been listed as a rumored signing of the Eagles, the first occurring back in the offseason when Westbrook’s health was in question. There may be more truth to the potential deal now, however, with the severity of #36’s injury. Dunn may not seem like a great choice because of his age (34), but the veteran runner still possesses the ability to carry the ball on a regular basis. In only 6 starts last season for the Buccaneers, the 14th-year back gained 786 yards and 2 touchdowns, and was also able to add 47 catches for 330 yards.

Edgerrin James (pictured, #32): The only RB listed thus far who has played in the 2009 season, James is a strong-willed former Rookie of the Year who is best known for his 7-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts, but remains a decent option as a relief/reserve-type player. It might be far-fetched to say he has the talent to compete as a starting Running Back this year, but he does bring veteran knowledge and wisdom along with his ability to pick up necessary gains on short-yard situations. James spent 7 games with the Seahawks this season, but was released earlier in the month because of roster unavailability and a decrease in playing time.

Nick Goings: This name may sound a bit awkward in a list filled with former superstars, but Goings is perhaps one of the most under-rated free agent RBs available, and because of his likely cheap price tag, the Eagles may take shot with him. At 6′0″ and 225 lbs., Goings has nice size to be a powerful short-yardage back who has the ability to take regular hand-offs as well. Once a quality starter for the Carolina Panthers, the 9th-year player saw his playing time drop significantly with the addition of other backs to the Panthers’ roster. However, he is a capable runner and certainly a low-risk signing because of his decreased money value.

Again, these reasons and suggestions can not be taken seriously unless some serious negotiations arouse between the team and some unemployed rusher, but the idea of solidifying what has become a likely thin RB position is definitely intriguing.

Has Reid lost his nerve?

Yes. Yes he has. It dawned on me yesterday as he stood there after the 3rd field goal with his arms across his chest, looking helpless; looking like he wished there was a rock around to crawl under. 21-9? 21-9? What good is that gonna do? Sure his guys showed alot of heart to fight back to at least have a shot at the game, a long shot, but Andy did them no favors at all. I dont have a copy of the illustrious 2 pt conversion chart, but common sense says that if you're down by 13, you go for two - putting yourself another TD + 2 pt conversion and a field goal short of tying it up. Sure its not likely but neither is scoring 3 touchdowns in the fourth quarter. As the monday night guys would say..."C'mon Man!!!"

Will all of the injuries and linebacking and secondary woes, our Eagles were pretty overmatched going into San Diego and the guys did a great job of fighting to stay alive, so I cant put the loss squarely on Andy's shoulders, But we are most definitely seeing a pattern of poor game management at crunch time. Andy looks to me like a gambler who has lost his nerve; he's stared the big score in the face time after time, come up short, and now he just cant muster the moxy to keep going for it. This wasnt an issue yesterday and I understand the idea of "hurry but dont rush," but I've had enough of this drag-ass late game clock control. What can be said about the short-yardage play calling the last few years? Pitiful? Cowardly? Uncreative is the kindest word I can think of.

I've had enough. I woke up today not wanting to watch another football game for the rest of the season. I was gonna cancel my Sunday ticket and stop dragging the second tv into the living room every week for 6 hours of rooting for a bunch of people I dont know; grown men playing a kids game. It's time to start getting outside and enjoying the fall, taking my dogs into the mountains and getting ready for ski season. But then, against my wishes, somebody turned the Ravens-Browns game on and I realized that I will be right back in front of the tube next sunday night, watching the Eagles stomp the Bears at soldier field, and telling my girlfriend that they are super bowl bound. What can I say? Maybe I do bleed green

. Pull it together Andy!!!

Trending up/Trending down after Week 10

.

Which Eagles are trending up or trending down after last Sunday? I offer my thoughts:

Trending Up

Jason Avant- Bye, Dawk was talking about how this kid has been 'invisible' for most of the season. I'd say he came into view Sunday. 8 catches for 156 yards. And seriously, how awesome was that one-handed catch in the second half?

Donovan McNabb- I never like it when McNabb has to throw the ball for more than 40 times a game, but you can't argue with his performance. 35 completions for 450 yards and 2 TDs, with one INT on a desperation throw. And me being the genius that I am, I benched him in my fantasy league in favor of Ben Roethlisberger.

Jeremy Maclin- Mac outperformed DeSean Jackson with 4 catches, 72 yards and one TD Sunday. If DeSean wasn't doing so well, I think Maclin would be getting some serious attention.

David Akers- I hate having to list this guy as 'trending up', but he was 3 for 3 on his attempts, and nailed a 52-yarder.

Trending Down

Sav Rocca- The Chargers' first TD was because Rocca's punt sailed out of bounds at the Eagles' 40, giving San Diego good field position to start with. One thing about Rocca: he's either really good, or really bad. He's very inconsistent.

Trent Cole- One tackle. Nothing else.

Brian Westbrook- I really like Westbrook, but it's never a good sign if you have two concussions in the same month. As much as I hate to say it, it might be in the best interest for Westy if he retired after this year so he won't have to pay for it later on in his life.

Asante Samuel- He looked lost on Naanee's TD late in the fourth quarter. Still no word on the seriousness of Sheldon Brown's injury. You can say what you want about Jay Cutler being an interception machine, but I'm not comfortable with Asante being the only true corner on the field next week. (waiting for JIBTA to start typing away below)

Other than the Vikings and Saints (and maybe the Cardinals), there's really nobody else in the NFC that's stellar. The Falcons aren't as good as advertised, neither are the Packers. We've got to be thankful that Dallas lost to Green Bay, or else we'd be toast. Now the NFC East is up in the air again. This loss stings, but we're still in the thick of the playoff hunt.

 	<fieldset class="poll-box">
