Quotable: McNabb, Westbrook, Dawkins at minicamp

First, everyone wanted to know whether McNabb thought the Eagles got the "playmakers" he asked for.

“I said playmakers, I didn’t say receivers,” McNabb said. “I said guys that can come in and make plays for us. We brought in Asante, who led the league in interceptions two years ago, and last year had a lot of interceptions as well. That was a start.

But did he like the offseason?

“(The offseason) wasn’t about my liking, it was for the team,” McNabb said.

Could the Eagles have been any more aggressive in the offseason?

“I think they did a great job,” McNabb said with a smile.

Can they win the Super Bowl this year with the players they have?

“I think we can win the Super Bowl every year,” McNabb said, this time without the smile.

If McNabb is bluffing, he’s doing a great job of it. He seemed upbeat, joking in the locker room and laughing with teammates.

Brian Westbrook was a bit more frank when he was asked about playmakers

"We added some guys that can play," Westbrook said. "At this point I guess you have to go to war with the guys that you have ... unless they add someone else. Me being satisfied doesn't mean too much. I want to add the best players to our team and I think we have some very good players already that can get the job done."

But ...

"If we can get a big-time receiver, a big-time runner, or whatever we can get, that's what I want as a player," Westbrook continued. "Coach (Andy Reid) made a point that he was going to get some playmakers on this team. I think he tried to. A lot of those (potential) trades and acquisitions didn't really go his way."

Westbrook on his contract situation.

"I'm paid," said Westbrook, who led the NFL with 2,104 yards from scrimmage last season. "I signed a contract that was fair at that (time), so there's no sense in me crying about it now."

Westbrook continued to deliver the goods on the topic of player compensation and his personal dealings with the Eagles' front office.

"All players want more money," Westbrook said. "I think the team's job is to not pay all the money that the player wants. I think that's where the conflict comes into play. I think this organization is a very good organization and they try to do things the right way. That doesn't necessarily mean that it al ways ends up the right way all the time, either."

I must say, I really love hearing Westbrook speak. He doesn't try to be controversial or even all that diplomatic either. He just comes off as honest and business-like. What more can you ask for?

Lito on his contract situation?

I'm not talking, so I don't know why you are all hanging around," a good-natured Sheppard told the horde of reporters gathered around his locker. "I'll answer a couple of questions on Monday."

Asante Samuel did his best to stay out of it.

"That's got nothing to do with me," Samuel said. "I just do what my coach tells me to do. It doesn't matter what I am used to. Whatever my coach tells me to do, I'm going to do it."

Sheldon Brown chimed in with his thoughts on the Lito situation

"I don't really know how Lito's situation is being handled," Brown said. "Obviously, Lito and me are close, but he doesn't really share that. As far as I know everything is OK. He's straight. He hasn't come to me and said they're doing it wrong. So, I just worry about my business. If we can play together and stay together, I'm cool with it. Hopefully we can stay together and win the (Super Bowl) and then all of us will get what we deserve."

And would Sheldon mind playing with Lito and Asante on the field?

``To be honest with you, I love it. Because I get to move into the slot. I get to rush the quarterback (from the slot). I get to do all that stuff. I hate it outside. It's boring out there.''

Brian Dawkins continued his defense of Lito

'It's different,'' Dawkins said of seeing a displaced Sheppard working as the third cornerback.

''[Sheppard's] play speaks for itself. When he's healthy, it speaks for itself. You have exactly what you need in a cornerback when you have Lito on the field. And when he gets the ball in his hands, it's almost six points.''

But he also defended the addition of Asante

'We were 32nd in the league in turnovers, so it doesn't surprise me they got playmakers on our side of the ball,'' free safety Brian Dawkins said. ''If we just hold onto some of the [turnover opportunities], we're not an 8-8 team.''

Lito is coming to camp

What a surprise...

Strong indications are that Lito Sheppard does indeed plan to attend the Eagles' mandatory minicamp this weekend.

Sheppard has been awaiting a trade that has not occurred and does not seem imminent. He could be fined if he were to sit out the minicamp, the only mandatory gathering for veterans until training camp starts in late July, but players trying to force trades or get contracts revised often use minicamp attendance as leverage. Although Eagles coach Andy Reid hinted last weekend that a revision of Sheppard's contract isn't out of the question, no such discussions are known to have taken place.

Had Lito now shown up to this mandatory minicamp, he would have been on the hook for a $14,000 a day fine and could be forced to pay back part of his signing bonus. So, not a big surprise he's here.

Frankly, what he and/or Reid say this weekend should reveal a lot more than just his attendance does.

Update: Jags not talking about Lito

Florida Times-Union writer Michael Wright has the scoop.

I finally got in touch with the agent, Lamar Smith, who said he couldn't confirm or deny the report. No need. I spoke with Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, who said Tuesday that the club has never even discussed the possibility of bringing in Sheppard, a Jacksonville native. In fact, Del Rio said he spoke with Philadelphia coach Andy Reid over the weekend during the NFL draft and "Lito's name wasn't mentioned."

Del Rio was very candid.

Del Rio, meanwhile, viewed the report as nothing more than an agent posturing for a new deal for his client.

"We have not even discussed him in our building," Del Rio said.

Not a huge surprise. After a weekend when the Eagles declared that they got no serious offers for Lito and that there was little interest... Lito's agent has to try to show that his client has some interest from teams around the league and therefore some leverage in getting a new deal.

I have to wonder whether Lito might take this as a humbling experience? It certainly is looking like his value around the league is not quite what he thought it was. Maybe he really isn't underpaid? Taking off my Eagles fan hat and putting on my objective commentator hat... I honestly think Lito's best option right now is to show up and play for the Eagles, try to stay healthy and visit this again next year. No one around this league doubts Lito's talent or playmaking ability, the only worry(and it's a big one) is his health. No one is going to give a player who has missed as many games as Lito the kind of money Asante Samuel and Marcus Trufant got. If he stayed healthy this year and played at the level we all know he can... his value would shoot up. Teams would be willing to part with high draft picks for him and fork over the big money.

Honestly, could Lito have picked a worse time to want a new contract? You could argue that his value is at it's lowest point in his career after these last few injury filled years.

Lito Sheppard, To trade or not to trade?

09-i_medium

To be honest, I was very surprised Lito was not dealt on Saturday. All indications were that he was ready to move on, he was making visits with other teams, and the Eagles openly admitted they'd received multiple offer for him. However, as it typical on draft day, nothing materialized. Andy Reid even said in his post draft press conference that the Eagles had gotten no significant offer for Sheppard over the weekend.

When asked about the Lito situation, Andy was his usual evasive self.

The two-time Pro Bowl player hasn't said much since the Eagles gave a six-year, $60 million contract to Asante Samuel, but he could say plenty if he declines to show up for the team's mandatory minicamp Friday through Monday.

Coach Andy Reid said Sunday he expects Sheppard to be there.

"That's not what I'm looking at right now, no," Reid said, when asked if he's inclined to excuse Sheppard from the camp. "He's part of this football team, just like everybody else."

Andy went on to say he'd sit down with Lito this coming weekend and they'd "work something out." The interesting thing about this situation and the wildcard that none of us know is exactly what the relationship between Lito and the organization is right now. Lito has wisely not said a word about the situation publicly, but reports that he is unhappy with his contract have not been denied. So the question is, how untenable is the situation? Is this something Reid and Sheppard can sit down and work out? I suspect that question will get answered this weekend.

One clue could be that Lito's agent is reportedly trying to orchestrate a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a package of 2009 picks.

According to league sources, Sheppard's agent, Lamont Smith, has had extensive conversations with the Jacksonville Jaguars about a possible offer for his client.

The Eagles claim to have no knowledge of this and Lito's agent would not comment.

Smith, through his receptionist, said he would not comment. Sheppard did not return a phone call. An Eagles source said Smith's attempt to cut a deal with Jacksonville was news to the team. The same source said there were no trade discussions involving Sheppard with any team yesterday.

With 2 first round picks and 9 total selections in 2009 already, surely the Eagles aren't in need of a package of 2009 picks... If that trade was made, another shoe would need to drop quick to prevent a full on revolt from the Eagles fanbase.

Lito Visits the Bucs

2i7q13c_medium

The long-rumored Lito Sheppard trade appears to be getting closer.

FOXSports.com has learned that Sheppard was in Tampa on Wednesday to visit with the Buccaneers, who have emerged as the frontrunner for the two-time Pro Bowler, and is likely to be traded by Saturday.

It appears it will take a second-round pick plus and additional pick or player to get the deal done.

Two or three other teams are interested in the cornerback, who has played with the Eagles since entering the league in 2002.

The Bucs currently hold the 20th pick in the first round, which is likely more than they'd give up for Lito. More likely is the #52 overall pick, which is 3 slots after the Eagles in the second round. JScott over the Tampa Bay blog, Buc 'Em doesn't think it will happen.

Glazer speculates that a 2nd alone will likely not be enough, but you'd have to guess that the Eagles wouldn't get any more than a 2nd and 5th which is what the Raiders paid for DeAngelo Hall. Either way, it looks like today is Lito's last day as an Eagle.
