PFF: Derek Landri Is Trending Up
Pro Football Focus took a look at their individual grades for players now that the season is over and identified who made the biggest jumps up and drops down for each team. For the Eagles, Derek Landri was up and Nnamdi Asomugha was down..
Derek Landri: From -7.1 to +22.0
So where did that come from? Landri started in Carolina, and despite having one of the quickest first steps of any interior lineman, failed to impress the longer the season went on. Yet put him in the wide-nine scheme and watch him go. Landri played so well as a backup in his 355 snaps that he has many thinking he could handle a full-time role in the Eagles’ defense. What was so impressive was how the former Jaguar was able to make plays rushing the passer and defending the run, showing the kind of discipline that the scheme relies on. Great find.
And for the downside....
Nnamdi Asomugha: From +10.0 coverage, to -1.0 coverage
First, don’t take this as saying Asomugha was terrible, he wasn’t. He simply had plenty of moments where he looked completely out of place in a scheme that didn’t seem to suit him. He got better as the season went on and but never justified the price tag, and failed to look like the shutdown corner he had become in Oakland. By the end of the season he had given up twice as many yards and four more touchdowns than he did in all of 2010. You do feel he’ll get better in 2012, but for now, Eagles fan can be understandably disappointed.
PFF also identified the Eagle who most deserves more snaps... Check out the article here.
Kobe Bryant Is Recruiting Rob Gronkowski For The Eagles
Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski was in attendance at the Lakers vs Celtics game the other night and Philly native Kobe Bryant took the opportunity to recruit to Gronk to his beloved Philadelphia Eagles.
"I told him the Eagles need a tight end," Bryant said. "I’m recruiting. He’s a freak athlete. He shouted at me and I shouted back. It’s fun to have those conversations with athletes you respect."
There’s no doubt Gronkowski is a freak athlete, but if Kobe was watching the Eagles this year he probably would have seen that Brent Celek had a pretty good year.
Then again, the Pats make it work with two TEs…
The Linc - Asante Samuel Wants To Be Back
Samuel: "of course" I want to be back
Asked if he wants to be back as an Eagle, Samuel said simply, "of course," but didn't elaborate. "I just take it day to day, see what the future holds," Samuel said. But he said he had not received any clear indication from the team of what their plans are for him next year.

Draft Diary: Training days with Kuechly

Kelce: I'll Be Ready For OTAs
For now, Kelce's foot is in a protective boot and he's relying on crutches to get around, which he admitted was "annoying." But as he prepares for his first offseason as an NFL player, Kelce said that he'll be ready for the Organized Team Activities the Eagles will go through after April's draft. "It's making good progress," Kelce said of his foot. "The doctor is saying I'll be out of the boot in a little bit and moving around again."
NFL 2011: Worst Decisions of the Year | Football Nation
Andy Reid Hiring Juan Castillo as Defensive Coordinator - With the Philadelphia Eagles’ firing of defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Head Coach Andy Reid was searching for someone to fill that slot. In an unconventional move, Reid chose Juan Castillo. Castillo has been a member of the Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staff since 1995. From 1998 to 2010, he served as the club's offensive line coach. More notable is the fact that Castillo had not coached that side of football since his run at Kingsville High School in 1989. Hiring Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator was not Andy Reid’s defining moment as a head coach.

Todd Bowles: "I'm Straight Philadelphia"
Todd Bowles was not declaring his sexual orientation to the city this week when he said "I'm straight Philadelphia." He was referring to the fact that he played his college ball in the city at Temple and that his hard working attitude on focus on winning mirrors that of the fans here.
DeSean Jackson Should Be Looking For Stevie Johnson Money
Yesterday I mentioned that Stevie Johnson is hitting the free agent market next month and that his contract could be a good bench mark for DeSean Jackson's eventual deal. Both were drafted in 2008, they're both the same age and while Johnson has been a later bloomer in his career, both have been well underpaid for what they've produced over the last couple seasons.
Let's take a look at their last two seasons.
DeSean Jackson
2010 - 47 rec, 1056 yards, 6 TDs
2011 - 58 rec, 961 yards, 4 TDs
Stevie Johnson
2010 - 47 rec, 1073 yards, 10 TDs
2011 - 76 rec, 1004 yards, 7 TDs
Johnson has bested DeSean in every category. Plus, he's 6-2, so he's got a size advantage over DeSean as well. And he's never missed a game since becoming a starter in Buffalo. The only real advantage DeSean has in special teams where he's a standout and Johnson doesn't play. That said, DeSean had very little impact on special teams last season with mitigates this difference.
So while we've heard the phrase "Larry FItzgerald money" tossed around in regards to Jackson, that's absurd. He's simply not in Fitzgerald's class and no one is going to pay him like he is. What we should be looking at is Stevie Johnson money. Whatever he gets this offseason should be the benchmark for a DeSean Jackson deal.
The question is when Johnson gets a deal done. Because certainly Johnson's people have to be looking at Jackson as a guy they can use as a springboard for their own negotiations. The Bills have been in talks with Johnson so there's a chance a deal could get done before free agency. However, they're also talking about a franchise tag, which wouldn't help the Eagles at all.
The Linc - Todd Bowles On The Eagles Secondary
Bowles Offers His State Of The Secondary
New secondary coach Todd Bowles played his college football at Temple and as a veteran of eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back with Washington and San Francisco, he epitomized the type of football player that the City of Philadelphia embraces.
Bowles' early look at the secondary
"You see a lot of athletes, you see some playmakers back there and you see some guys that can hit, so you see potential, you see potential but you just have to bring it all together," Bowles said.
Williams, McNabb Fade Away at Same Time: A Fan's Analysis - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
The Philadelphia Eagles have a mixed legacy with Donovan McNabb, which goes all the way back to the beginning. One of many past misdeeds that sticks to Eagles fans like myself is how McNabb was booed when he was drafted by Philadelphia in 1999, instead of record-setting Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams.

Prisco: DeSean Jackson Is A Top 5 Free Agent
Pete Prisco of CBS sports ranked the top 50 players due to hit unrestricted free agency this year. Now, Prisco did not include guys that he is nearly 100% sure will get the franchise tag or resign. If he had, Drew Brees would have been the obvious #1 on the list. He also excluded Matt Forte and Calais Campbell from the list.
He ranks DeSean Jackson as his #5 free agent.
The ability should get him a huge contract. But the attitude might cut that down some. Even so, this kid is a game-changer. Those guys don't hit the market all the time. He turns 26 in December.
For one, I don't really think DeSean's "attitude" is much of an issue. For one, it's never been a problem before this year and his issues this year were related 100% to his contract. And this wasn't a Terrell Owens situation where he was upset about a $49 million contract. He was making about $600K. It doesn't excuse things perse, but it does provide a little justification and would lead me to believe that if he was well paid he would be the same good team guy and hard worker he always was.
I agree with Prisco on the age being a factor. DeSean is really only just entering what should be his prime years. And yes, he has game changing ability. But just how "huge" will this contract be? That's really what I'm not sure about.
There are several more complete WRs set to hit the market as well. Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Marques Colston, Stevie Johnson, Wes Welker & Reggie Wayne. Age will affect the upside of contract numbers for guys like Welker, Wayne & Bowe... but the fact is that whoever signs those guys will likely be out of the market for a top WR. Plus, there's probably 5 WRs that will come off the board in the top 50 picks in the draft.
So the relative abundance of WRs in the market this year and Jackson's inconsistency will certainly hurt his value. But his age and real gamebreaking ability is obviously going to attract interest.
Given the fact that so many WRs will hit the market, tagging Jackson and trying to work out a deal based on what all those other guys get makes some sense for the Eagles. Particularly, I'd take a look at what Stevie Johnson gets. Production-wise, he's not that different than DeSean. His contract could provide a pretty good baseline for what DeSean is worth.
Certainly more than Larry Fitzgerald does.
