Football Philosophy: Offensive-Defensive Symbiosis and the Eagles
Every now and again, I'll be posting different articles about football philosophy pertaining to my personal beliefs about the sport and offering evidence to support my claim. All arguments have holes, and at the end of these I'll offer a poll as an outlet for your opinion. As always with BGN, your comments are more than welcome.
At the risk of sounding pretentious, I pulled out an old high school biology term for my first post. For the most part, this is a good debate for the offseason - dissecting last year's iteration of the Philadelphia Eagles and then using that information to see how things can be improved for the kickoff in September. However, instead of dissecting individual weaknesses on offense and defense, this article will cover how both units interact with each other and how the performance of one influences the performance of the other.

Ruminations About the 2010 Eagles Draft
[Note by JasonB, 05/07/12 3:14 PM EDT ] Promoted from fanposts
Now that we have reached the point where there is a lot of talk about this being a make or break year for the Eagles 2010 draft class I thought it would be a good time to review my feelings while it was going on.
I can't remember ever being as excited about any draft as I was about the 2010 Eagles draft. There was a sense that we were on the cusp of something new and fun. Donovan McNabb had been traded at the beginning of the month and some key vets had been sent packing including our beloved Brian Westbrook. We were going into the draft with extra picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th rounds so we knew going in that the Eagles were about to bring in a haul and had the ammo to move around in the draft virtually at will. And move around they did.
This is not going to be an attempt to judge or grade the 2010 draft. I just want to review what happened and what my thinking was at the time.

The TRUE value of Avant
A few weeks ago, I wrote my first article for BGN, calling into question Avant's current production in lieu of his surrounding receivers. A main theme which I pushed for was the possibility of upgrading the 3rd receiver position. To summarize, I stated that although Avant had demonstrated decent production, with the receivers he was surrounded by, one had to wonder if that production could be better. Was Avant's production due to his sticky hands and precise route running, or a byproduct of his stellar surrounding corps? Maybe a little bit of both? I argued for the latter, and therefore hoped that the FO at least experimented with that slot position. After the draft, we can see that the Eagles FO did address the 3rd WR; while not automatically upgrading the position, they at least made it more interesting, and a spot to watch this offseason. I definitely think it is possible that Avant could definitely end the season as low as 5th on the depth chart. However, here are the reasons that I do not think it would be wise to cut Avant anytime soon.
Evaluating the OLine: Part 1
As it usually happens, this post started with completely different intentions. Originally this was supposed to a piece on the positives that could be taken form the last four games of the season, when the Eagles decided to play at the level we expected from them all year. We were thrilled when the Eagles went 4-0, feeling that finally they had turned a corner. There had to be some aspect of the game that had improved. Instead what i saw in those games was a slightly disturbing trend. In those games the offensive lines run blocking did not pass the eye test. Holes weren't being opened, and many plays were stopped at, or behind the line of scrimmage. When I started watching games i went in reverse, starting with the Redskins game. As I watched that game I wrote it off as the backups not performing well in place of McCoy, who was out with an ankle injury. Still I felt this needed further attention because a lot of the runs never had a chance. What I noticed was very interesting. Having been a BGN resident for some time I know that if you are gonna make any kind of accusations about this teams play, you better be able to back it up with facts. I present to you my analysis of those last 4 games, with stats to support my opinions

Here is what I want to happen to the roster before the regular season starts and my take on what we have currently.
Building the 53-Man Roster: Part 8(!) of 53
New post (well not so new anymore), since the old one got bumped off. Thanks for all the responses so far.

Could the 3-4 Be Imminent?
So after watching the draft unfold and imagining the possibilities of our new acquisitions, I started to think how do these players fit in the long term? How do the current rookies and the current roster fit into a long term model for success? I began to read over the scouting reports of our newly acquired rookies, and I noticed a small trend. Versatility.
Most of our acquisitions were thought to be system versatile in the 4-3 or 3-4, and some were felt to be a better fit in the 3-4. This naturally peaked my interest and thus begun my quest to look at scouting reports from our recent FA signees, previous draftees, and the commonality between the wide nine and the rest of the defensive system Juan employs as opposed to the 3-4.

T.O > Tuna LOLboys?
Check out the guys that were drafted under Tuna
Terrance Newman (Yes, he was really good at one point)
Jason Witten -- All Pro
Jay Ratliff (In he 7th mind you)
Yes I realize some of these guys are terrible now, but at one point they contributed at a high level see: Marion Barber, Jay Ratliff, etc. In this was just in 3 years worth of drafting -- 3 all pros. He had his misses just like everyone else...But look at what the Cowboys have drafted SINCE 2007
-- Doug Free
-- Felix Jones
-- Mike Jenkins
-- Sean Lee
-- Dez Bryant
-- Tyron Smith
That's from 2007-2010.. I see absolutely 0 all pros, a couple of pro bowlers, but at the same time, both Jenkins and Doug Free regressed in a big way since their pro bowl appearances. The only consistent player that's really good I see on there is Sean Lee and I do think Smith will be a good player. I DON'T like Dez Bryant considering he disappears for stretches at a time. Anthony Spencer is like the Jeremy Maclin of the Cowboys. He gets all the match ups thanks to Ware, but doesn't get the #s he should against the inferior talent.
In any event, we keep saying LOLskins, but in all honesty the Skins have been making consistently better moves each off season. On the flip side of the coin the Cowboys seem to be regressing from the Tuna days every year.
LOLboys?
NFC bEast Eternal Thread #49: Avengers Assemble!
Rule #1 - No Pictures Of Rosie O'Donnell
-This is BY FAR the most important rule. Do not break it or you'll be given a very thorough shunning. Also we've run into someone posting Cat butts, don't do that either.
Rule #2 - All Pictures and .Gifs Must Have Subject Lines
-Some people are slackers and we go on Bleeding Green Nation during class because having your English teacher explain how to write persuasively kind of loses it's luster after a couple years. Some people even come here while they're supposed to be working (TIME THIEF!). So, for these people we must require you to put a subject line on all pictures, especially pictures of half naked women.
- Please check where the picture or gif came from. No one wants to get a virus, worm or trojan on their computer. Just remember that some people cannot afford to replace a computer every year.
Rule #3 - Shun anyone acting like a turd
-Y'all go ahead and decide who acts douchey and who doesn't. We will direct that person to the nearest mental institution.
Rule #4 - Be cool, man. No temper tantrums. No "threadbombing."
-No need to lose your head.
Rule #5 - All people are accepted.
-This is the NFC bEast thread, we don't judge or attack based on who roots for what team. All fans of theCowboys, Giants, Redskins and any other NFL team for that matter, are welcome. Just don't get too trolly or we'll have to give you the Real LT treatment
Rec or the Hulk will come to your house and fuck shit up

Sorting out Shady, VY, and the 2011 season (a.k.a. the good, the bad, and the ugleeeeee)
Okay, so far so good. If you've lost track, fallen asleep for 12 months and just woke up, or if you just didn't give a damn, the eagles are back in the march towards another season. For those of you who have a brain that blocks out the excessively painful memories, 2011 was an off-season of great promise and lousy delivery. We shopped until we couldn't shop anymore, and then we shopped some more. We both everything on the wish list. We got veterans, and rookies. We failed to do just one thing.
We forget about Andy's time management issue. It seems in the course of our feeding frenzy, we forgot that all the new pieces had to be assembled. And Juan was new to the job, so he didn't have a great deal of experience to draw upon.
So we played, we failed, we learned we failed some more.
And here we are in the 2012 off season, with the same "OMG! We are loaded THIS year!" Well, before we get too far into our hot air balloons again, let's face the good, the bad, and the uglee facts. We'll do that after the break:
