Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
Andy Reid is jubilant. He sees that his primary target is still on the board at pick number 23. Dee Ford is a high motor, undersized defensive end with an injury history. Check. Check. Check. All the boxes are checked. He goes to make the call for his pick when General Manager John Dorsey grabs him on the shoulder. "Back when I was with the Packers," he says to Andy, "we liked a little bit of size in our players."
"Size is only important in head coaches," Andy replies.
"How about this Beckham kid?" Dorsey replies.
"Well, he is under six feet, so I guess that could work," Andy replies.
So the front office will veto Andy and go with Beckham. Both of the top safeties are gone and only one wide receiver with a first round grade remains. (Sorry Benjamin but the Chiefs do not want a project with their first pick.) The Panthers place a call to trade up for Beckham but Dorsey tells them to piss off. Beckham Jr. has the skillset to get open, create separation, get to the ball, and catch it. He is versatile enough to do whatever Alex Smith needs him to do. Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs offense needs a lot of help and Beckham is ideally suited to deliver exactly what they need. Most importantly, he brings speed. Currently, the Chiefs offense is relatively poor because it lacks speed outside of Jamaal Charles.
The addition of Beckham Jr. helps with the development of TE Kelce and will make slot guy Avery look a lot better. Andy likes that idea.
Unlike Lee, who was just taken previously by the Eagles, Beckham Jr. has no injury history. Dorsey likes that.
The Chiefs also consider a guard or a tackle who could convert to guard. Zach Martin would have been considered but he is long gone. Cornerback is also a position to consider but they have Beckham Jr. graded the same as the available corners and receiver is a bigger need. (Sorry Dennard and Fuller.)
Kansas City has a need for a returner, so Beckham's return ability is a nice bonus but not a primary reason to take him.
The Chiefs will be very pleased to nab a wide receiver at pick 23 who could be a top 2 receiver in most draft classes. Nevertheless, Andy will be a little disappointed that he could not get his guy.
