New York Jets GM John Idzik Not Interested in DeSean Jackson

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

It looks like yet another team will be passing on the chance to sign DeSean Jackson.

If there was any team that made the most sense for DeSean Jackson to land as soon as the Eagles released him, it seemed to be the New York Jets. The Jets could offer Jackson a contract without having to worry about being able to afford him; they have the second most cap room in the entire league. Heck, even New York Jets owner Woody Johnson commented on his team's interest in Jackson last week when the wide receiver was still under contract with the Eagles! Former Eagles connection also exist: QB Michael Vick and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg are already employed by the Jets. Speaking of Mornhinweg, he was reportedly open to reuniting with Jackson. But more significantly, Jets GM John Idzik was not. Per ESPN's Rich Cimini:

Unless they pull a 180, the Jets won't be a factor in the DeSean Jackson sweepstakes -- a smart move. He's not a fit for them. They held internal discussions on Jackson, with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg giving his blessing. Mornhinweg, who coached him with the Philadelphia Eagles, told people in the organization that Jackson -- known for his bad-boy reputation -- wouldn't be a problem in the locker room. That apparently wasn't enough to sway Idzik, who reportedly hadn't reached out to Jackson's agent as of Saturday. Jackson is scheduled to visit Monday with the Washington Redskins. The Oakland Raiders might be interested as well.

It's really curious to see why a team that seems to make so much sense for Jackson not even show the slightest interest. This curiosity has Gang Green Nation (Jets SB Nation site) confused. Here's what they had to say about it:

The [offensive coordinator] who knows [Jackson] best in the organization and perhaps the entire league apparently wants Jackson. He would be an ideal fit at a position of need, but the Jets aren't showing any interest. I'm not really sure I understand this. It can't be that Jackson's demands are too high. You have to speak to a free agent before you know what his demands are.

I'm not really sure there is a good explanation for the Jets not even exploring the option.

The Jets' reported lack of interest follows a report from Saturday that Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs are also not interested. And with that said, the two rumored suitors who were most familiar with Jackson have now seemingly passed on him.
