Well, it depends on what the expectation is for this season. The Eagles
are currenly an enigma to the NFL. One good offense, one lousy defense. One up, one down. One road win, one home loss. And at week threee the fortunes of the season seem too far in the distance, no matter how this game turns out.
But this Eagles team is very proficient offensively. With a leading rusher, a leading receiver, and a quarterback once thought to be worth nothing showing a rejuvenated season, this team has plenty to get excited about when they get the ball.
And defensively, the sports pages are filled with chortles and guffaws whenever the eagles defense is mentioned. But the defense is generating turnovers. The same defense shut down Alfred Morris
in week one. This same defense has faced two very good offenses with mixed results. So the stage is set for tonight to determine which defense shows up? The defense that can stop a run, intercept a pass, and keep the eagles offense on the field? Or will it be the defense that cannot stop the passing game, and cannot call the right defenses, and cannot command respect in their home field?
If you had hopes that the Eagles would merely better their 2012 win total of 4, this game means nothing to you. The Eagles will get their 4+ wins this season with offense alone. But if you've been impressed with their special teams, and pace setting offense, and the glimmer of hope from the defense, then this game means everything. Going into Denver at 2-1 means a loss in Denver does not pull the plug on this season. And with games against the Giants
and the Cowboys
, the Eagles could be the NFC East division leader by the bye week. If that happens, expect some whisperings of post season.
If the Eagles lose tonight, then they will be a longshot to win in Denver, and will likely be 1-3 heading into the meat of their schedule. Even with success against NFC East rivals, the Eagles will likely remain under .500 this season, will be 0-2 to start their home record, and will be playing for draft position after the bye week.
If the Eagles are going to find success this year, they will need to locate it tonight at the expense of Andy Reid.
