The inspiration for this post came from the general lack of support for Johnny Manziel as a potential Eagles QB in the comments section of a previous article (specifically this one). I looked up the Whizzer White Award winners (disclaimer: lazily based on Wikipedia) because I remember Nnamdi being touted as a high character guy who didn't perform on the gridiron and found a list surprisingly full of SB champions. Since 1991, the year of my birth, Reggie White, Michael McCrary, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and 2-rings Charlie Batch have won both the award and a Super Bowl ring. So while I set out to prove that character is a bunch of nonsense in this age of Kobe and Roethlisberger, I ended up building up a pretty great case against myself. I love what Johnny Football did to the Crimson Tide, but I'm starting to think a quiet lead-by-example guy like Mariota is the way to go. Character is apparently not overrated.
