Training Camp Preview: BGN Staff Predictions for the Eagles' Final Roster

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Football is back!!! Training camps across the league will open today and 90-man rosters will hit the field for several weeks of practice, preseason games and scrutiny by coaches, local media and their respective fanbases. The Philadelphia Eagles are one of several teams entering a new era of football. With a several new faces on both the sideline and on the field, the Eagles will have an open competition at every spot to see which players are the cream of the crop. When the competitions end, the real games will begin and the real 2013 Eagles will begin their campaign.

The training camp period is all about evaluation and chemistry. No one knows how the final roster will look and it is likely that perceptions will be changed over the next few weeks. Players like Damion Square and Jake Knott could go from long shots to members of the active roster, while veterans like Felix Jones and Jason Avant could be dropped from the team. That's just how the process works.

With an eye on the competitions, here is a look at the current roster:

The BGN Staff, like all of you, have our respective ideas on what the final roster will look like. While there are likely to be additions and subtractions to the roster prior to final cuts, with the roster currently in place, our staff thought we should take a shot at predicting the final product. Brandon, Dan and I all have our opinions, and during this process, we have proven that each of us has different opinions on certain players.

Below are each of our final roster and practice squad predictions:

Brandon

QB: Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley (3)
RB: LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Felix Jones (3)
TE: Brent Celek, James Casey, Zach Ertz, DEREK CARRIER (4)
WR: DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Damaris Johnson, Arrelious Benn, Ifeanyi Momah (5)
OT: Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Dennis Kelly (3)
OG: Evan Mathis, Todd Herremans, Allen Barbre, Danny Watkins (4)
C: Jason Kelce, Dallas Reynolds (2)

DL: Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, Bennie Logan, Vinny Curry, Isaac Sopoaga, Clifton Geathers, David King (7)
OLB: Brandon Graham, Connor Barwin, Trent Cole, Joe Kruger (4)
ILB: DeMeco Ryans, Mychael Kendricks, Casey Matthews, Jason Phillips (4)
CB: Bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams, Brandon Boykin, Curtis Marsh, Jordan Poyer, Brandon Hughes (6)
S: Kenny Phillips, Patrick Chung, Nate Allen, Earl Wolff, Colt Anderson (5)

K: Alex Henery (1)
P: Donnie Jones (1)
LS: Jon Dorenbos (1)

Practice Squad: QB Dennis Dixon, RB Matthew Tucker, WR BJ Cunningham, OT Michael Bamiro, DE Damion Square, TE Will Shaw, LB Jake Knott, OG Nate Menkin (8)

Rationale: First, the QB competition is truly open. Michael Vick could easily be cut. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now. I have 5 total tight ends (4 on the roster, 1 on the practice squad) because Chip values them more. They also aren't pure TEs. James Casey can line up in a number of spots and Zach Ertz/Derek Carrier have some WR skills. Derek Carrier is my projected training camp standout for this year, by the way. Dan is also a big member of the Carrier fan club.

I'm not particularly eager to talk about the front seven until we see exactly what happens there. That was easily the hardest part of the roster to fill out. I have hopes for Clif Geathers. Casey Matthews makes the team because he's a good STer and Oregon Duck bias. Same goes for Brandon Hughes, minus the Duck bias, plus he's an OK depth option. CB is shaky and needs suitable depth. I'm unreasonably optimistic about Kenny Phillips, because I know he can be so great if he's fully health. Veteran Donnie Jones edges out rookie Brad Wing in the punter battle.

Mike

QB: Nick Foles, Michael Vick, Matt Barkley (3)
RB: LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Felix Jones, Chris Polk (4)
TE: Brent Celek, James Casey, Zach Ertz (3)
WR: DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Damaris Johnson, Arrelious Benn, Riley Cooper (5)
OT: Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Dennis Kelly (3)
OG: Evan Mathis, Todd Herremans, Allen Barbre, Matt Tennant
C: Jason Kelce, Dallas Reynolds

DL: Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, Bennie Logan, Vinny Curry, Isaac Sopoaga, Clifton Geathers, Antonio Dixon (7)
OLB: Trent Cole, Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham, Joe Kruger (4)
ILB: DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks, Jason Phillips, Jake Knott, Jamar Chaney (5)
CB: Bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams, Brandon Boykin, Curtis Marsh, Jordan Poyer (5)
S: Pat Chung, Nate Allen, Kenny Phillips, Colt Anderson, Earl Wolff (5)

K: Alex Henery
P: Donnie Jones
LS: Jon Dorenbos

Practice Squad: WR Ifeanyi Momah, TE Derek Carrier, DE David King, OB G.J. Kinne, DE Damion Square, OT Michael Bamiro, ILB Emmanuel Acho, WR B.J. Cunningham (8)

Rationale: I know I can be negative at times, but as much as people are trying to be optimistic about this team, I look at the depth at outside linebacker, cornerback and safety and get sick to my stomach. This defense is going to struggle quite a bit. For me, picking the fourth outside linebacker was impossible because there was no one I really thought was worthy on the roster. After some convincing from Jimmy and Dan, I took Joe Kruger (who I swear will be IR'd after final cuts for his roster spot).

Jason Avant, Kurt Coleman and Brandon Hughes have been on this team for a while but are noticeably gone from my roster. I hate getting rid of Avant and it sucks but there is a lot of talent at wide receiver and Cooper is just better at special teams. I do have Foles starting, as I think he will win the competition. I am not sure if Vick would be on the squad if Foles wins the job, but I am keeping him on the roster because I am not sure Dennis Dixon worth having around. I didn't have Momah on the final roster because I am just not sure there is room. I get that he is tall and athletic but do I want a guy like that, who is recovering from an ACL injury and isn't all that developed, running down on special teams? For what it's worth, I think he will be IR'd as well.

I have Matt Tennant making the roster because I think his versatility works for this team. He can play center and both guard spots and has playing experience. I believe Dennis Kelly will be the starting right tackle in a year or so. I love Jake Knott and think he'll be a Colt Anderson like stud on special teams and as a backup. I am really weary of Kenny Phillips making it out of training camp with his health intact but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. My bold prediction for this season is that Nate Allen is considered a potential Pro Bowler when the year concludes.

Dan

QB: Nick Foles, Mike Vick, Matt Barkley (3)
RB: LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Chris Polk, Felix Jones (4)

OT: Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Dennis Kelly (3)
OG: Evan Mathis, Todd Herremans, Allen Barbre, Danny Watkins (4)
C: Jason Kelce, Dallas Reynolds (2)

DE: Brandon Graham, Trent Cole, Cedric Thornton, Clifton Geathers, Joe Kruger, Vinny Curry (6)
DT: Fletcher Cox, Isaac Sopoaga, Bennie Logan, Antonio Dixon (4)
LB: DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks, Connor Barwin, Jason Phillips, Casey Matthews, Jake Knott (6)

Practice Squad: DE David King, DE Damion Square, WR Ifeanyi Momah, OT Michael Bamiro, WR Russell Sheppard, RB Matthew Tucker, OG Nate Menkin, FB/TE Emil Igwenagu

Rationale (Editor's Note: Dan doesn't like following formats):

Offensive Notes

Note #1: I see the Eagles carrying four (4) RB. Also, I'm a Chris Polk fan and make no bones about it. He forced Howie Roseman to keep him on the roster last season, and I think he'll do it again in 2013. Besides, Felix Jones will probably get hurt.

Note # 2: Geoff Mosher thinks Jason Avant is a lock to make the roster, and, unless he has a team source feeding him information, I'm inclined to disagree. I'm a huge fan of Avant, the person, and appreciate what he brings to the table as a player (dependable 3rd down target, superb hands, circus catches, blocking), but I could see him getting cut in favor of Benn and Cooper.

Note #3: Yeah, I know, the Derek Carrier pick is ridiculous, but I had to include a shocker, and how better than with a wildcard at the TE/WR hybrid position? I'm fully aware that Brandon Lee Gowton and I have a problem... and the only cure is more Carrier!

Note #4: Nine (9) OL, including just three (3) OT and four (4) OG? A little lean, but that's also the benefit of having versatile players. In fact, both Herremans and Barbre are listed as "T" on the Eagles' official website. By the way, Watkins makes the team only because it would cost more to cut him.

Defensive Notes

Note #1: Vinny Curry has bulked up in order to play the 5-tech, but after watching him in college and last season, I'll need to see him succeed in that role before I believe it. I have him making the roster (barely), but in general I'm not sure he fits and won't be surprised if he ends up getting squeezed out. I doubt Curry gets the Jaiquawn Jarrett treatment and is cut altogether, but perhaps he ends up getting dealt before the season for a mid/late-round pick. Rooting for the guy, we'll see what happens.

Note #2: Antonio Dixon is going to make this team, damn it, and he's going to produce!

Note #3: Later, Kurt Coleman (though I feel you were consistently, and unfairly, put in position to fail). Sayonara, Jamar Chaney. You too, Phillip Hunt.

Note #4: The overall pure LB situation, particularly from a depth standpoint, is suboptimal.

Note #5: I hope and pray Kenny Phillips is healthy enough to make the roster and start, but from reports of how he looked moving around during OTAs, it appears the whispers that he's just about done could be true. He might be this training camp's O.J. Atogwe, and it's not like his contract ensures lock status. You could say I'm quite concerned about the secondary.
