Before we get to the morning links, let's get the introductions out of the way. I'm Jimmy. Hi. My email address is email@example.com. Feel free to fill that up with questions and/or hate mail. Also, Twitter handles:
- Jimmy - @JimmyKempski
- Mike - @mike_e_kaye
- Brandon Lee, or Brandon Lee Gowter, or whatever he's calling himself now - @BrandonLeeSBN
- Dan Klausner - @dklausner
- Bleeding Green Nation general Twitter account - @BleedingGreen
If you're not on Twitter, get on it. It's probably not what you think it is. It's an outstanding resource for information, and a necessity for training camp coverage.
Onto the links:
The important thing to note there is that we're in "Mile 1" of a marathon. At some point, could Michael Vick just begin to pull away from the rest of the pack because he's so talented? Absolutely. But for now, this competition is very real, and Foles is in the lead.
You must go live in practice to get players in the full flow of football. Also, it helps to evaluate players. You can't tell much about interior linemen (O or D) without hitting. Sure, Jason Kelce has a magnificent beard, Evan Mathis is a sexy beast and Isaac Sopoaga makes a mean spinach dip, but you don't know if they can play until you see them violently punish each other on the practice field, each man hoping to destroy the soul...the very will to live...of the man across from him. Until the play is over 2.7 seconds later. That's football.
"That's a great thing about this is our older guys have really set the tone," Kelly said. "If you watch how [Jason] Kelce, [Brent] Celek, DeMeco Ryans and guys like that have approached things, you can't help but say, ‘Oh.' They do such a great job of showing the young guys how to be professional. That's what, to me, [has] made the transition really easy because that core group of older guys here - there's not a ton of them. Trent [Cole] is like that. Trent's always working hard. There's not a lot of older guys on this team, but the group of older guys that are on this team - Michael [Vick] - those guys work."
(Jimmy note - It's kind of funny to me that Celek and Kelce are thought of as older guys.)
There is a surprising lack of variability in # of plays run from team to team.
"Uh, yeah, we've been taking glances," Cole said last month as the the Eagles prepared for their six-week break before training camp. "We're curious just like anybody."
If there's nothing for agents and NFL general managers to fight about, they'll invent something. That's all you really need to know about the issue of "offset language," which so far has kept seven of the top 10 first-round draft picks from signing, including the Eagles' Lane Johnson, selected fourth overall in April.
