Report: Eagles had major interest in Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin

Scott Halleran

So much for the dead season. According to the San Antonio Express News (via Birds 24/7), the Eagles "offered" Texas A&M Head Coach, Kevin Sumlin, the same position in Philadelphia this offseason. The Eagles clearly had their sights set on college coaches for their next head coaching hire, with Sumlin, Notre Dame's Brian Kelly, Penn State's Bill O'Brien, Syracuse's (now Bill's) Doug Marrone and obviously now-Philadelphia Head Coach Chip Kelly in the fold.

The report also mentioned that Sumlin was offered the head coaching job at Auburn. While it is unknown if Sumlin was the Eagles preference over Kelly, the Texas A&M coach clearly wanted to stay in college football for now. He has become a key figure in college football and will likely contend for a National Championship as long as Johnny Manziel is with the Aggies. The NFL coaching interest obviously helped Sumlin, as he was given a raise this summer to stay in College Station, Texas.
