2013 Eagles Armchair GM Draft Kit

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to type out all of my notes, but I wanted to post what I could before the draft begins tonight and I will update & complete the post by the time the 2nd round starts tomorrow so that it looks something like last year's version. With that in mind, here are some brief pre-draft thoughts, the 1st Round of my Value Board, followed by my Final Mock. I will be adding the rest (FA Recap, Team Needs, complete Value Board, Live Mock, Draft Grades, & 2008-2012 History) as soon as possible. Check out the aforementioned link for a better explanation.

Brief Pre-Draft Thoughts:

  • If the Eagles are okay with their starting OTs, they should be both willing an able to trade back. There are several trade candidates, namely the Cardinals, Chargers, Lions, and Dolphins, between picks 7-12 that hopefully can be leveraged to max out the value. I'd prefer trading back because I think they have a lot of needs to fill, but if they stay at 4, the pick should be OT.
  • I advocated trading Jason Babin before the draft last year...c'est la vie. Jeremy Maclin, Nick Foles, and Vinny Curry are this year's Babin. Jason Avant would be in that group, but his trade value doesn't justify eating the resulting 1.5 mil in dead money. Similarly, DeMeco Ryans has more value to the Eagles than what they would get in a trade.
  • Trent Cole is more complicated. I don't see him as a 34LB, so he is essentially reduced to a 6 mil situational pass rusher. The problem is the cap hit if you trade him...6.4 mil this year, 4.8 mil if you wait a year, and 3.2 mil the year after that. They may have to swallow it at some point.
  • I will be posting in-depth team needs for every position, but here are some thoughts on QB. When I evaluate QB prospects I like to split them into three categories: Franchise - QBF, Almost Franchise - QBA, & Back-Ups - QBU...explained further in the link above. This year there are no QBF prodpects and only one QBA prospect that fit the Eagles' needs and I consider it a waste to select a QBU unless you already have a QBF on your roster....hence, my "F" grade for the Foles selection last year.
  • The Eagles, or any other team for that matter, aren't winning a Super Bowl without a Franchise QB. That said, I would do whatever it takes to acquire one...aka, I would be fine with trading out of the 1st round for a bounty of draft picks that included, among others, a 2014 1st Round pick to facilitate getting one next year. If you disagree, answer me this question: Which team is closer right now to winning a Super Bowl, the Eagles or the Redskins?....see my point.
  • Food for thought for those of you that watched March Madness. Chane Behanon would be an awesome TE and Aaron Craft, a mean FS.

Draft Target Value Board:

After evaluating prospects over the past year, I like to narrow that list down to players that I feel fit the Eagles needs. I have never been a big fan of reaching for a need in the draft (i.e. the Eagles 2011 Draft). Therefore, I like to create a big board based on the perceived value of each player as it pertains both positional depth in the draft and Eagles' need. For example, when I post the completed version, the ILB prospects will be drastically devalued cause the Eagles have their starting ILB positions filled and a total of 6 ILB on their roster. There are several prospects, not included on this board, that I like to varying degrees, but I exclude them from the board due to their poor fit.
