NFL Free Agency 2013: Dashon Goldson looking for big money

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Spor

The 49ers elected not to franchise safety Dashon Goldson for the 2nd straight year, which means that the 2 time Pro Bowler will test the free agent market next week. The Eagles are one of many teams in search of help at the safety position and who could be interested in Goldson.

If they do want to jump in the ring for his services, they'll have to dangle some pretty hefty money. The San Francisco Chronicle figures that Goldson will look to be paid in line with the top safeties in the NFL. The standard may very well be the 6 year, $60 million deal with $34 million guaranteed that Eric Berry signed in 2010 (his rookie deal). Eric Weddle signed a 5 year, $40 million deal with $19 mil guaranteed that figures to be part of the discussion as well.

Goldson, who will be 29 at the start of the season, probably isn't going to get that kind of length, but but an average annual value of $10 million or so is what he'll be looking for. With the gobs of space teams have around the league, chances are he'll get it or something close.

I feel very confident that the Eagles will add a safety in free agency and they've got the cap space for Goldson... but I don't see them getting into this sweepstakes. This is an older player looking for mega bucks and that fits more the philosophy of 2010 that we're hoping they learned from.
