Editor's Note: It seems I haven't made myself totally clear. I do not think Jones is a terrible college prospect, but this was done as a reason as to why I do not think Jones deserves to be picked 4th overall by the Eagles. I see him as mid-2nd round pick, after having watched all of his 2012 game tape that is available on draftbreakdown.com, even though I only included 4 games.
I'm going to break down the games backwards.
First is the Nebraska game:
As you can see, this is a pure hustle sack. Jones is asked to drop back in coverage, the QB is flushed and instead of tossing the ball away he decided to pull a Favre.
As the official scoreboard said Jones had two sacks, I had to go back and look through the game again and I suppose the following play is where he got the sack.
As you can see Jones did nothing of impact here and I cant see why he got credited with a sack.
A quick note: The Nebraska offensive line was terrible throughout the whole game, yet they still scored 31 points against a stacked Georgia defense.
Next is the Alabama game
Good burst off the side to beat Fluker (side note: he has looked terrible so far). Jones forces the turnover after the QB decides to pump fake.
Jones is getting pass blocked by a tight end, but because of push of the middle, the QB decides to run right into the arms of Jones.
The Auburn game
He gets credited with a sack, but its really a option play gone bad and Jones got a free rush towards the quarterback because the pulling guard is way too slow.
Jones is in some kinda of zone coverage, the quarterback gets flushed by a great push up the middle and from the right side. Jones just cleans up, but did nothing else to deserve credit for the sack.
The Florida game
Jones gets a good jump of the ball but is nowhere near a sack. But because of the rusher from the other side almost got the quarterback, Jones gets to clean up.
Nice executed stunt where the center recognized the stunt too late.
Another hustle sack; does not beat the LT right out of the bat, but does get by him the second time and is right there to clean it up after quarterback is flushed to his side by the other pass rusher.
After having watched four full cut-ups of Jarvis Jones, I can safely say that Jones is a good but not great pass rusher. Most of his sacks are what I would call "hustle sacks," where the QB is flushed by a teammate and Jones is just in the right position to clean up. The one play where Jones did the work by himself, was the first sack against Alabama where he beat Fluker with a nice speed rush and the nice executed stunt. The rest was clean up sacks.
Also if Jones does not beat his man with his first step, he has no alternative pass rush moves and he will most of the times just stand there and stay blocked.
