Has Geno Smith literally run away as the top QB in the 2013 NFL Draft?

Joe Robbins

Despite several analysts, coaches, and scouts ultimately questioning the strength of the 2013 quarterback class, the reported top guy, Geno Smith, put on a show today at the Combine. With his showing in Indy, has he taken hold of the QB rankings and is he more likely to be the first pick overall in the selection process?

Well, he did it. West Virginia's Geno Smith made the most of his opportunity today at the NFL Combine. Smith clocked an impressive official 40-yard dash time of 4.59, which was a identical to Cam Newton's time (4.59) in 2011. He got plenty of praise from Kurt Warner and Mike Mayock in the throwing drills. He also had the second highest vertical leap for his position (33.5) and had easily the best long jump of anyone at quarterback (124.0 inches). That said, speculation has run rapid on Twitter and Bleeding Green Nation, that our old friend, Andy Reid, is salivating over Smith like he is a basket of crab fries with extra cheese sauce.

Many analysts and scouts will see similar thing on tape, whether it be his heavily-discussed play under pressure or his decision-making, but still these numbers are extremely impressive. While he was not asked to run a lot at West Virginia, this may show coaches (especially ones with West Coast offenses) that he is more Donovan McNabb than JaMarcus Russell. That may not be enough to make him the first pick overall, but if the scouts and general managers believe in the Combine, it could definitively improve his stock.

Let's take a look at how some of the other reportedly top quarterbacks did during their drills:

Name School Height Weight 40 Vertical Long Jump
Geno Smith West Virginia 6'2" 218 4.59 33.5 124.0
EJ Manuel FSU 6'5" 237 4.65 34.0 118.0
Mike Glennon NC State 6'7" 225 4.94 26.5 102.0
Tyler Wilson Arkansas 6'2" 215 4.95 28.5 112.0
Ryan Nassib Syracuse 6'2" 227 5.06 28.5 105.0
Landry Jones Oklahoma 6'4" 225 5.11 31.0 115.0

We are two months away from the 2013 NFL Draft, but still there are questions about all of these guys. As you can see, Smith and EJ Manuel ran away with the athletic drills of the Combine, but does that really matter? Will Chip Kelly see these numbers and realize one of them is the missing piece to his quarterback puzzle? Are you sold Geno Smith following his performance and is he who you would want at pick number 4?
