Pointing skills! - Mike Ehrmann
The Eagles desperately need help at cornerback. Will they look to sign Smith to fill that position?
Going into the 2013, the Eagles have a lot of holes on their roster. One of the biggest positions they will need to fill is CB where they could possibly need 2 new starters depending on what happens with Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. As you may know, Asomugha could be cut if he doesn't restructure his current deal and the Eagles don't plan to use the franchise tag on soon to be free agent DRC but could bring him back on a different deal.
Geoff Mosher reported on CSN last night that the Eagles are going to look into free agency to acquire help at CB. Specifically, Mosh said that the Eagles have interest in Dolphins free agent CB Sean Smith.
Said on CSN last night that #Eagles could eye free-agent CB Sean Smith (Dolphins). I'm told they're interested, but at the right price.— Geoff Mosher (@GeoffMosherCSN) February 24, 2013
According to The Palm Beach Post, "Smith is seeking a contract worth at least $24 million guaranteed over three years, and the Dolphins don’t value him that highly" but "not to rule out Miami using the transition tag on Smith".
Smith is a former second round pick (61st overall) by the Dolphins in 2009. In his 61 games played (56 started) for the Dolphins he has posted 5 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, 180 tackles, and 3 forced fumbles. He led the league in first down and touchdown completions allowed and was PFF's 76th ranked CB in 2012. At 6'3" and 218 lbs, he's one of the bigger CBs in the league, which may fit Chip Kelly's idea to add more size on defense.
