We all know the secondary is a mess, that needs alot of work. We cant however just draft 4 new starters in one draft. So we obviously need to get some form of secondary help in free agency. I am not interested in signing an 2nd class citizens. Secondary needs real players that can be meshed together to form a cohesive unit. The problem is that this years free agenct market is not ideal in terms of secondary help. With the franchise Tag figure being so low for Safeties, you can scratch Jarius Byrd, William Moore, and Dashon Goldson off the top of your Free Agent wish list. There are some corners that will hit the market because the Tag price for corners is very high. The problem with shopping for free agent corners this year is that there isnt any player that you can get as talented, but with less question marks around him than DRC. Dolphins corner Smith is basically DRC with a cheesier smile, often described as "aloof". Derek Cox's history of injury is scary. The kid from Pittsburg has really only performed at a high level against #1 and 2's this past season. I have always been wary of a kid who seems like a flash in the pan in a contract year. So basically, there are questions surrounding most of the top talent in free agency. However, there is one above average player, that will be available due to a weird contract, that doesnt have the questions that the other top players on the market have, and that man is......
Mr. Laron Landry!!!
Hard Hitting, punishing safety that Philly has missed since we jettisoned Dawkins and Mikell. Last year, when Landry signed with the Jets, his agent had a clause put in that exempts Landry from being hit with the Franchise Tag this year. If we dont get Landry signed to a contract, we will be stuck settling for lessor talents like George Wilson, or Chung.
In about a week, Byrd, Moore and Goldson will all reach a long term deal with their teams or get slapped with a franchise Tag. To me, that makes it crucial for us to aggresively pursue Landry, and sign him to a long term deal as soon as free agency starts. His signing will set the tone for the type of secondary we are trying to bring back to Philly. Landry is a Thumper, smack you in the mouth type of Safety. If Nate Allen is some how able to regain his lost confidence, he is a coverage guy who can be paired with Landry. I dont trust Allen, so I would still draft another safety that can cover, but he can be paired with Landry if need be. I see Landry shooting to the top 2 or 3 targets of our free agent list.
Howard Eskin reported on PFT that Landri would be an Eagles target. Then again, he also reported that he would visit the Eagles last march, and Landry ended up signing with the Jets before ever visiting Philly.
In terms of the secondary, is their a better FA target this year than Landry, knowing what we know about the market thus far?
