The Kansas City Chiefs GM John Dorsey was just talking about how hes not sure there is a clear cut first round quarterback in this years draft. At first, I think to myself why would the Chiefs be tipping their hats about any of their draft plans unless they were spreading misinformation for the purpose to benefit themselves in some way. There are rumors of the Chiefs having interest in Nick Foles and for the right price Alex Smith should be available via trade. Its still very early to evaluate this years crop of quarterbacks in the 2013 NFL draft, but generally my gut instinct feels like Andy Reid is going to try to trade for a quarterback instead of drafting one.
Returning back to John Dorsey's comments about not being sure theirs isnt a clear cut number one QB prospect in this years draft I ponder is there anyway he could trying to trade back from the number one pick and accumulate draft picks as Andy Reid tries to build the type of team he envisions? Maybe so, Andy Reid has been known as a wheeler and dealer and loves to accumulate draft picks, but why would he downplay the quarterback class this early and devalue them instead of getting their quarterback first and seeing if there is a high bidder that is in love with a quarterback and will pay a premium in order to move up to get them as we saw last year in the RG3 and Andrew Luck Sweepstakes?
What I envision is seeing Andy Reid going after Alex Smith of the 49ers and Nick Foles of the Eagles at the same time and using each quarterback against each other as leverage in order to get the best deal. I think what you will see is which ever quarterback he trades for they will give up a 2nd round draft pick and a conditional fourth round pick in next years draft.
Once he gets his quarterback, then what? It doesnt appear as if their willing to move from the number one spot as i stated before or otherwise you wouldnt see John Dorsey devaluing the quarterback class so much. However I must admit his opinion about this years quarterback class is slowly starting to become the general consensus. If no one is willing to give an arm and a leg to move up to the number one spot in the draft, and if the Andy Reid gets his QB on the cheap via trade what does that mean for the draft and the Eagles?
As far as Im concerned, Luke Joeckel starts making alot of sense as the first player off the board. As weve seen in the past, Andy Reid likes to build his teams from the inside out. Looking at the next two picks, I dont see Star Lotulelei and Geno Smith making it past the Jaguars and Raiders. So within three picks the players we covet Joeckel and Star going off the board, which leaves us with either Eric Fisher OT, Damontre Moore OLB/DE, or DeMarcus Milliner CB as our next best options.
Its amazing after a couple of months of looking foward to our first draft without Andy Reid, our draft actually once again still has much to do with Andy Reid and ultimately what he decides to do at Quarterback and how everyone's board will shift vastly in response to what they do prior to the draft. Gonna be a very interesting off season.
PS. im not a good writer, but wanted to share this thought with peeps...
