Eagles Safety Earl Wolff Set to Return to Practice

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

An added bonus to the Eagles' 34-20 victory over the Lions can be gleaned from the team's post-game injury report, which was completely empty. Not a single Eagles player left the snow-filled game with an injury. Head coach Chip Kelly confirmed the team's injury report during his Monday press conference.

There was no one [injured] yesterday.  We met briefly after the game, and they just gave me an update of who's going to be a real concern, and there was no one after the game at all.  Earl [Wolff] is supposed to practice this week, but they'll go through and meet with him later on, and I think Earl and Najee [Goode] will be the only guys that will even be listed on the report.  I think Earl is supposed to try to get out to practice tomorrow, so we'll see where he is.

Entering the game, only two Eagles had been listed on the injury report with serious injuries. Both Earl Wolff (knee) and Najee Goode (hamstring) were inactive on game day after being ruled out earlier in the week. Now, it appears both have a chance at returning to practice this week. Goode suffered his injury last week during the Cardinals game. Wolff has been out for a couple weeks now since going down with a knee injury during the Packers game in Week 10.

Wolff's return is significant because it means he will likely replace veteran Patrick Chung who has been starting in his absence. Chung has struggled at times in recent weeks. During the Eagles-Redskins game, he took a bad angle and accidentally tackled Trent Cole instead of Washington fullback Darrel Young. Young would proceed to run in for an uncontested touchdown. A similar incident then occurred in the Eagles-Cardinals game when Chung intended to hit Larry Fitzgerald but hit his teammate Brandon Boykin instead. This mistake caused Fitzgerald to run in for an easy touchdown. These plays are an example of the costly mistakes that have occurred with Chung on the field.

Chung was originally a starting safety at the beginning of the year but he couldn't stay healthy and lost his starting job to Wolff after returning from injury. Wolff appeared to be a more reliable player when he was playing in place of Chung. The Eagles defense has been playing fairly well the past nine weeks. Replacing Chung with Wolff could help sure up the unit even more.
