What to Root For: Breaking down the tie breakers...

This week is pretty simple, beat the Skins! The tie breaker part is a bit trickier.

With six games to go our playoff chances are pretty simple, run the table and we are hosting a Home game; maybe even a first round bye. Not that I doubt our ability to rattle off six in a row but in the event we don't we're gonna need some help and there is a good chance the division comes down tie breakers. Incase you forgot heres how they work.

  1. Head to head
  2. Division win percentage
  3. Common games win percentage
  4. Conference win percentage
  5. Strength of victory
  6. Strength of schedule
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed
  9. Best net points in common games
  10. Best net points in all games
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games
  12. Coin toss

Here is how we currently stack up against Dallas.

Head 2 Head Division record Common Games Conference record Strength of victory

Eagles 0-1 2-2 4-4 ★ 4-2 .333
Cowboys 1-0 ★ 3-0★ 3-4 5-2 ★ .362 ★

Dallas holds the first tie breaker so outside of us amassing a two game lead on the Cowboys over the next five games we will have to win at Dallas in week 17. Going into week 17 with a one game lead would require us to win because a loss would give Dallas the first tie breaker. Tied for first going into week 17 is simple; win and in. Trailing Dallas by 1 game we can still get in with a win and some tie breaker magic...

So what does any of this mean?

  • Winning against the Redskins this week is paramount, a loss to the Skins would mean the Cowboys have to lose to both the Giants and Redskins in order for us to have a chance at winning a tie breaker.
  • We still need the Cowboys to lose a game in the division in order to win a tie breaker. So next weeks Game against the Giants is friggin' huge...

Check out what happens to the tie breakers with a win against the Skins and a Cowboys loss to the Giants.

Head 2 Head Division record Common Games Conference record Strength of victory

Eagles 0-1 3-2 5-4 ★ 5-2 ★ too much
Cowboys 1-0 ★ 3-1 3-5 5-3 math....

what does this mean?

It means we can go into week 17 one game back of the Cowboys with a shot at wining the Division; further more it means we can lose to Arizona (because they are not a common opponent) and any other team regardless of what Dallas does we still go into week 17 with a shot at the Division. Like I said, friggin' Huuuuuge!

Check out what happens if you add in a Win against the Skins, a loss to the Cards and and any othere team, with the Cowboys losing to the Giants and winning 4 games leading up to week 17

Head 2 Head Division record Common Games Conference record Strength of victory

Eagles 0-1 3-2 7-5 7-4 ★ endless
Cowboys 1-0 ★ 4-1 7-5 8-3 possibilities

and that means a week 17 win would look like this

Head 2 Head Division record Common Games Conference record Strength of victory

Eagles 1-1 4-2 7-5 8-4 ??????
Cowboys 1-1 4-2 7-5 8-4 ??????

But what does is meeeeeeeaaaaaan?

It means I included strength of victory for a reason. As unlikely as it seems going to a fifth tie breaker is a realistic possibility. While we are currently behind in strength of victory It is a volatile stat, a Packers/Bucs/Raiders win this week could jump us ahead of the Cowboys. Basically we want every team we have beat and the cowboys haven't to win and vice verse; everyone the Cowboys have beaten and we haven't to lose. kinda Funny to think that our season could come down to the Buc at the Rams in week 16 or we could just run the table like I first proposed.

One week season boys, beat the Skins!
