It has been quite a while since I posted here.... but I wanted to put down a few thoughts.
I went into this year, as much of you did, expecting this to be a rebuilding year. However, I had a surprise of hope when we saw the offense explode on Monday Night against the Redskins. Then, of course, as all Eagles fans deal with each year, my hopes were dashed by inconsistent play and QB woes.
I knew this would be a rebuilding year but I am excited about the future.
The purpose of this post however is to express how pleased I am at the improved play of the Defense. They seem to be coming around. It's a new scheme with a lot of new faces. They seem to be getting their legs finally.
Here is where I am extremely pleased. I have been a Nate Allen fan since he was drafted. He looked like he was gonna be special his first year when he started off with 3 picks in 4 games. We were running a Jim Johnson Defense under McDermott. Then he was injured. When he returned, he was still in recovery mode and dealing with the horrible scheme called the "wide 9" which put too much run support emphasis on our safeties. This is not Nate Allen's strong suit as he is more of a coverage safety. Between recovery and a horrible scheme, his sophmore and jr years have been marred with inconsistent play and consistent media bashing.
This year, i expected a defensive learning curve and steady progression. That is just what we got. The defense is playing better and so is Nate Allen. He has gotten better each game. His confidence is coming back and I wouldn't be surprised to hear the constant critiques to start turning to consistent compliments.
Looking to the future, Nate Allen is in a contract year. He has not played to his 2nd round draft pick status yet but I would not be surprised to see him get offered a veteran contract to stay here. We have tried other safeties.
Nate Allen is not Brian Dawkins. Let's face it. No one is. But let's give credit where credit is due. He keeps working, keeps grinding, and is showing signs of improvement. I for one, won't be surprised to see him in Eagles Green again next year.
