Philadelphia Eagles Week 8 PFF Grades: The Defense Played Well

Elsa

Who were the best/worst graded Eagles players against the Giants?

Pro Football Focus is a site that grades NFL player performances. Let's take a look at what they had to say about the performances in Philadelphia's 15-7 loss to the New York Giants.

PFF offers explanation on their grading system on their website. Read more about that here.

OFFENSE

Best

Evan Mathis +4.1
LeSean McCoy +1.8
Brent Celek +1.7
Todd Herremans +1.6

Worst

Matt Barkley -6.2
Michael Vick -4.1
Lane Johnson -4.0
Riley Cooper -1.3

Analysis: The only thing PFF graded well on offense was the running game and run blocking. McCoy  finished the day with only 48 yards on 15 attempts (3.2 avg) though. Evan Mathis also graded well in pass protection.

Matt Barkley received a worse grade than he did in Week 7. He threw for 158 yards on 17/26 (6.1 y/a),  0 TD, 1 INT, 1 fumble. Vick was obviously less than 100% and it affected his play. Lane Johnson was marked responsible for 2 sacks, 1 QB hit, and 4 hurries.

DEFENSE

Best

Fletcher Cox +3.1
Cedric Thornton +2.1
Connor Barwin +1.9
Clifton Geathers +1.9
Cary Williams +1.8
Trent Cole +1.0
Nate Allen +1.0

Worst

Bradley Fletcher -1.7
Earl Wolff -1.4
Isaac Sopoaga -0.7

Analysis: Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton are consistently the best players on the Eagles' defense. Connor Barwin had an active day and contributed with 1 hit, 1 hurry, 1 batted pass, and 3 assisted tackles. Clifton Geathers only played 14 snaps but played well against the run. Cary Williams only allowed 12 yards and 3 catches on 6 targets along with 4 tackles.

Bradley Fletcher was graded poorly in pass coverage, allowing 8 receptions on 11 targets for 83 yards. One of those catches was an excellent grab by Giants WR Hakeem Nicks. Hard to blame  Fletcher too much on that one. Earl Wolff was also given a below average coverage grade. Isaac Sopoaga played the most snaps he has all season (63%) and graded poorly in run defense.
