I don't know how others feel, but my pre season expectations for 2013 season are unfolding before my eyes. The Birds will most likely be just good enough to miss out on a top 10 draft pick. Clearly, our "franchise" QB of the future is not yet on this roster ( sorry all you Nick Foles fans), and if the current draft order is any indication of approximately where the Eagles will pick, we should be 13-16. Looking at the teams (currently) drafting in front of us, and, yes, I know all this could change over the next 10 weeks but an exercise like this is still fun...most all of them desperately need a Franchise QB or one of the top OT's. Bottom line: you are not moving up to get a top QB. None of the top ones will slide and we will be left reaching like Minnesota or Tennessee..which is just pathetic in my opinion. That being said. I would like to pretend Jeff Laurie has fired Howie and I've been consulted for off season decisions ( yep..this is my pipe dream)... Here we go:
Scenario 1: (As stated above, this most likely won't happen) either Mariota from Oregon or Johnny football is there when we pick 13-16. If so, then we must take one of them. Otherwise, we review FA options. I am no longer on board with taj Boyd from Clemson.
Scenario 2: No worthy QB is available. We take a developing strength ( our defense) and work towards making it dominant with our selections in rounds 1 through 5:
(1) DT Louis Nix DT from Notre Dame( 2) DE Trent Murphy from Stanford (3) CB Corey Fuller from VT (4) S Ed Reynolds from Stanford (5) OLB Carl Bradford Arizona State (6) OT/G La'el Collins from LSU converted OG, now starting LT (7) RB Melvin Gordon from Wisconsin (shady like)
Fill in gaps via trade or FA which could alter my draft scenario above ( example: Jarius Byrd)
Notable FA: Matt Cassell Josh Freeman Ben Tate MJD Anquan boldin Jacoby Jones Eric Decker Hakim Nicks Mike Thomas from Tampa Jarius Byrd Jared Allen Clay Matthews...don't laugh...they have to sign Arron Rodgers yet...as honorary GM it is my duty to explore this. ;-)
I realize it includes a lot of assumptions this early. Also, the QB situation is unresolved in my scenario and how important that is. My scenario most likely includes resigning Vick next year. But, if the Ravens can do it with Trent Dilfer then my scenario could have merit either with Vick or someone else under center assuming Vick cannot complete the season healthy.
Jim Johnson was at least partially responsible for Andy Reid's success. I say, let's help Chip cover any perceived mistakes in his young NFL career by building a dynasty Defense for the ages!
